33RD WARD WEEKLY NEWSLETTER - DECEMBER 5, 2025

// //

Dear 33rd Ward Community,

While we all prepare to celebrate the holidays together this year, our hearts are filled with the weight of all the ways our communities have experienced extra suffering this year. Over the past year we have been in a near-constant battle to care for each other during attacks from the federal government in the form of deportation raids and cuts to funding and services many of our neighbors need to survive. Through it all, we have come closer together, organized deeply to provide resources to each other, and taught each other important survival skills.

Our ward office is working to bring this spirit of care into the holidays. Just yesterday we hosted the Sage Brigade, the 33rd Ward Office’s Seniors Program, to assemble holiday art displays for local seniors. This is a yearly tradition in our office, and we look forward to delivering student-made art to bring a little extra joy this year. Yesterday afternoon, I also joined the Koram Senior Community for their 39th anniversary celebration and the Moogoong Senior Community to celebrate their 42nd anniversary! Thank you so much to the organizers of these events for welcoming me as a guest, and for creating such special places for our seniors to spend time together and celebrate their community.

We are also still operating our free store at the ward office for anyone that needs essential winter weather supplies like hats, gloves, and lotion. You can stop by any time during business hours to pick up the supplies you and your family needs. There are many charitable events throughout the ward in the coming weeks, so please review the announcements section of our newsletter below to take full advantage of local opportunities to spend time with community members.

This has already been a very cold and snowy winter, and this weekend we will see very cold temperatures and more snow. Neighbors are organizing to provided local overnight emergency shelter for unhoused neighbors during the deep freeze that is expected this weekend. Anyone in need can find shelter at the location below, or if you have resources to spare, organizers are seeking donations based on the list below:

  • Mayfair Presbyterian Church, 4358 W Ainslie St:

  • Donations needed: Cots, Sleeping Pads/Mats, Sleeping Bags, Air Mattresses, Blankets, Pillows and Pillowcases

  • Donation drop-off: between 2-5pm on Friday 12/11 and Saturday 12/12

Lastly, negotiations for the city budget are still under way. There are City Council meetings scheduled for each day next week, and for December 23, as we prepare to work intensely to resolve negotiations before the deadline at the end of the year. Many of my colleagues have proposed an incomplete and regressive budget plan, prioritizing taxes and fees, like doubling the garbage fee, that impact working families directly in order to protect corporate interests. I am committed to continuing to support a budget that asks the largest corporations to pay their fair share as our city navigates historic funding cuts from the federal government.

All of our city departments are experiencing the impacts of these cuts. We are hearing many concerns and questions from our community about impacts to essential community services and resources, such as the public libraries. We’ve developed a brief survey to gather your thoughts and opinions on the public library budget proposal. I look forward to hearing from you.

Thank you for doing this work with me. You can always contact my office if you have any questions. We are here to help.

In solidarity,

Rossana Rodriguez Sanchez

Support Our Local Businesses

We know many neighbors are choosing to stay in during this difficult time, and we understand safety comes first. At the same time, our local businesses, corner stores, restaurants, and shops are feeling the impact of the recent attacks on our community. If you’re able, please consider supporting them in ways that feel safe for you, whether by ordering takeout or delivery, shopping online from them, or picking up from a trusted spot. Every gesture of support helps keep these community anchors strong while we look out for one another.
