Dear Neighbors,
I hope everyone had a beautiful Mother’s Day weekend and was able to enjoy some of the sunshine we finally got around the city!
As the weather warms up, I recognize many neighbors living in high-rise buildings experience the temperatures differently - especially if you live in unit on a higher floor. To address this issue, I introduced a “Flexible Heat Ordinance” to provide relief from the heat for our neighbors living in high-rises.
On Wednesday, the Committee on Housing and Real Estate unanimously passed the Flexible Heat Ordinance (SO2026-0024086)! With climate changes, existing rules make it challenging for buildings to respond to heat waves in October or April, when outdoor and indoor temperatures in buildings like these can spike over 80 degrees. This ordinance relaxes heating requirements in October and April for buildings with "two-pipe" heating and cooling systems, where the entire building must be set to either heating or cooling due to the physical and mechanical limits of the system.

A huge thank you to Catherine Sponholtz, President of the Park Place Tower Condo Association, for her advocacy on this issue, which included joining me at City Hall to advocate for neighbors in buildings like hers around the city. I expect the ordinance to pass at City Council next week and look forward to celebrating final passage with all of our high-rise neighbors.

And speaking of staying connected, we hosted our “Ward Night Out” at the incredible Holiday Club. After more than 25 years in Uptown, Holiday Club is preparing to close its doors later this month, and I’m grateful for the opportunity to celebrate the space, the memories, and the community it helped create over the years.
From longtime regulars to first-time visitors, it was beautiful to connect with neighbors and show love to a place that has meant so much to the 46th Ward. And of course, the night rolled right into karaoke, which honestly felt like the perfect send-off. Thank you to Benjamin, Sonny and the entire Holiday Club team for being part of our community all these years. You will always have a place in Uptown history. |
|
| |
|
From one Uptown staple to another, I also had the chance to attend the annual State of Uptown luncheon hosted by Uptown United and the Uptown Chamber of Commerce at Furama. It’s always great to be in a room full of business owners, community leaders, nonprofits, and, of course, my colleagues, all invested in the future of Uptown.
I appreciated the thoughtful conversation around the continued growth and future of our businesses and walked away feeling our time together was meaningful and energizing. Thank you to Uptown United and the Uptown Chamber for the invitation and for bringing our community together in such impactful ways. |
|
| |
I also had the opportunity to attend Anixter Center’s annual gala, an evening dedicated to celebrating the impact of their programs and the importance of mental health support in our communities. Anixter has been an important partner in the 46th Ward, especially through The Hub, their welcoming space for neighbors navigating mental health challenges and crises.
At a time when accessible mental health resources and safe third spaces are more important than ever, we’ve been incredibly grateful to have Anixter as part of our Uptown community. Thank you to the Anixter team for the invitation and for the compassionate, critical work you continue to do every day. |
|
| | Speaking of the importance of mental health care, I joined Mayor Brandon Johnson and the Chicago Department of Public Health (CDPH) for the announcement of the citywide expansion of the CARE program, a major step forward in how Chicago responds to mental health crises and socio-emotional distress. The expansion means every neighborhood in the city will now have access to trained behavioral health professionals and Emergency Medical Technicians (EMTs) who can respond to non-violent mental health situations with care, compassion, and support.
As a ward, it is important that increased mental and behavioral health resources are available for our community, especially here in Uptown. Expanding programs like CARE helps ensure neighbors are met with dignity and connected to the support they need during difficult moments. We are grateful to see continued investment in a more people-centered and public health-focused approach to community safety and wellness. |
|
| |
Last but certainly not least, I invite everyone to ease into summer with us at our upcoming Community Resource Fair in partnership with the Department of Family and Support Services (DFSS) office and many incredible organizations and service providers from across the city and our neighborhood. This event is all about connecting neighbors with resources, building stronger relationships across our community, and creating a welcoming space for support, care, and collaboration.
We’re especially excited to incorporate more wellness-centered offerings this year, including art therapy, mindfulness activities, and other restorative practices that help create space for joy, healing, and connection. Uptown is strongest when we come together, and we hope you’ll join us for an afternoon rooted in community and care. |

Say Goodbye to Potholes on Sheridan!
Good news, neighbors!
Just two days ago, the Chicago Department of Transportation (CDOT) told us that they were pushing forward the project to resurface Sheridan Road between Montrose and Foster and aim to start - weather permitting - this coming Monday, May 18th!
We are extremely excited for this project to start as neighbors - no matter if you drive, bike, take bus, or even drive the bus - know how rocky and bumpy Sheridan Road can be, and have made sure we know about it too!
This project not only includes milling the pavement down and resurfacing the entire street, but also includes ADA ramp and sidewalk improvements, curb and gutter replacement as needed to maintain drainage flows, paint-and-post bump-outs, concrete curb extensions, and new striping upon completion.
CDOT aims to complete the entire project - as always, weather permitting - by the first week of August.
During construction, temporary “No Parking” signs will periodically be installed as required. These temporary signs will restrict parking during work hours but not overnight until work is completed in that area.
Please reach out to us with any questions or concerns - we know that construction is never convenient, but in this case, we know the result will be worth several weeks of parking restrictions and inconvenience.

| Business Spotlight
This week’s Business Spotlight is dedicated to a true Uptown classic: Holiday Club
Since opening in Chicago in 1993, Holiday Club built a reputation as one of the city’s most beloved retro lounges, known for its old-school Vegas feel, vintage movie posters, iconic black-and-white photo booth, karaoke nights, dance parties, comfort food, and a jukebox that somehow always had the perfect song playing. Over the years, the space was described as Uptown’s “Swinger’s Mecca,” nostalgic for the days of martinis, lounge acts, and Rat Pack-era charm.

What made Holiday Club special wasn’t just the decor or the parties, though. It was the feeling. For decades, it became a gathering place for generations of Uptown neighbors. Birthday celebrations, first dates, karaoke debuts, dance floor memories, late-night conversations, and spontaneous nights out all happened within those hall of fame walls. It became one of those rare neighborhood spots that truly felt woven into the identity of the community. Right on the iconic corner of Sheridan and Irving, I think I speak for all of us when I say the memories will stick with us. From trying to sneak in after 10 p.m. on a school night to our most recent Ward Night Out!
As Holiday Club prepares to close this chapter at 4000 N. Sheridan, we want to thank Ben, Sonny and the entire team for everything they’ve brought to the 46th Ward over the years. While this location is saying goodbye, this may not be the end of the story. The team is actively searching for a new home, and we’re hopeful this iconic Uptown staple will find its next chapter soon. Stay tuned ❤️ |

| Link Match Program

Link Match is an incentive program that helps SNAP users stretch their food budget to buy more fresh fruits and vegetables. When someone spends $1 in SNAP at a participating location, they receive a $1 Link Match voucher to buy fresh fruits and vegetables.
VISIT a participating location PAY with your Link card GET your Link Match vouchers USE the Link Match vouchers to buy fresh fruits and vegetables the same day or save them for future visits

Link Match is a statewide Illinois program and has two sides: Farm Direct and Brick & Mortar. Visit linkupil.org to view all participating locations.
Farm Direct (farmers markets, farm stands, and other farm-to-consumer operations):
Brick & Mortar (Food Co-ops, grocery stores, and neighbor/corner stores): Each store has a daily limit ($5 - $25) on the number of Link Match vouchers you can receive. Each store issues its own unique vouchers, which can only be used at that specific store. Food co-ops with a $25 limit only allow the purchase of local produce with Link Match. Certain locations of Cermak Fresh Food, Jewel Osco, Save-A-Lot and Tony's Fresh offer the Link Match, but not all stores in these chains participate in this initiative. See listing for details.

| | | It has come to our attention that large amounts of food are being dumped in various areas of the ward to feed pigeons. We want to remind neighbors that feeding pigeons is a violation of the City of Chicago ordinance.
As a reminder, dumping food in public spaces attracts rodents, creates sanitation issues, and negatively impacts the surrounding area. We ask all neighbors to help keep our ward clean and safe by refraining from feeding pigeons and reporting large food dumping when you see it.
Thank you for doing your part to keep our community healthy and welcoming for everyone.

| Proposed Development at 665 W. Sheridan - Learn more on Wednesday, May 27!
On Wednesday, May 27 East Lakeview Neighbors will be hosting a virtual meeting for neighbors to learn about and provide feedback about three proposed developments, one of which is in the 46th Ward (the other two are in the 44th Ward). 46th staff will join the meeting to take feedback and help answer any questions.
This development located at 665 W. Sheridan, where developers are proposing a 5-story, 19-unit building. The building would include 17 two-bedroom units and two 3-bedroom units. On-site bicycle parking would be required but no vehicular parking would be provided as the site is on a narrow lot that does not have alley access.
This building is permitted by-right under the site’s existing RM-6 zoning and the developer is not currently seeking a zoning change, special use, or variance of any kind. As such, this development does not require City Council approval or approval from Alderwoman Clay. However, due to the site’s proximity to the lakefront, it does require Lakefront Protection Ordinance approval from the Chicago Plan Commission.
To learn more about this and other proposals past and present, check out the 46th Ward’s Zoning and Development page! |

| | | New Water Main Coming to 4600 - 4800 N. Racine!

This week, the The Department of Water Management (DWM) began construction on a project to replace the water main on Racine between Wilson and Broadway!
This project entails replacement of the existing - more than 120 year-old! - water main and replacement of all existing lead service lines along this stretch of Racine. DWM has shared the current tentative timeline with the ward office. May - July: Water main replacement. July - October: Lead service line replacement. October - December: Ashphalt and concrete restoration.
During construction, parking will frequently be limited during workdays, and cars will be relocated when necessary to ensure safe working conditions. Parking will continue to be available overnight and on weekends.
DWM does not anticipate any water shutoffs during construction aside from when connecting new service lines; when required, neighbors will receive at least 48 hours of any planned water shutoffs. However, as the existing main is from the 1800’s, we have been alerted that nearby construction may cause small breaks / leaks that require emergency shutoffs for repairs.
Please let us know if you have any questions or concerns! |
