Dear Neighbors,
This week brought us all four seasons! On Sunday while the sun was shining, I joined Sarah’s Circle for their annual Winter Walk at Uplift Community High School. This powerful event invites neighbors from all over to walk a mile through our neighborhood, learn about the realities women experiencing homelessness face in our city and the work being done to support them. I was honored to speak and reflect on how important it is that our community continues showing up for our most vulnerable neighbors. Thank you to Sarah’s Circle for the incredible work they do every day to ensure women in Chicago have access to housing, community and support. |

|
| | We kicked off the week with the 46th Ward’s first ever joint CityKey and Mobile DMV event at Clarendon Park, hosted in partnership with the Office of the City Clerk and the Illinois Secretary of State. Thanks to the incredible response from neighbors, every DMV appointment slot was filled, and we issued 111 CityKey cards during the event. Thank you to Clerk Anna Valencia’s office, the Secretary of State Alexi Giannoulias team, Clarendon Park staff, our partners at Old National Bank for tabling the event, and all the neighbors who came out to take advantage of this opportunity. |
|
| | This week, I visited Skinner North Elementary School to connect with 7th graders and talk about civic leadership, public service, and the role young people can play in shaping their communities. Conversations like these are always inspiring, and I am grateful for the opportunity to connect with young leaders who are already thinking critically about the future of our city. Thank you to the Civic Leadership Foundation and the Skinner North team for creating space for these meaningful conversations. |
|
| |
I continued connecting with neighbors at 3730-40 and 3750 North Lake Shore Drive. These meet and greets are a great opportunity to share updates from the ward, hear about any issues neighbors are experiencing, and connect neighbors with city resources. If you’ve ever been inside you know the beauty and character if the building also reflect the neighbors inside. Thank you to everyone who came out and shared their time and ideas with us. |
|
| | Speaking of connecting with neighbors, we also had the opportunity to connect with neighbors across the ward by joining both the Buena Park Neighbors quarterly meeting and the East Lakeview Neighbors (ELVN) monthly meeting on the same day. I joined Buena Park Neighbors (BPN) at Clarendon Park while members of my staff attended the East Lakeview Neighbors meeting at Mount Carmel Academy (728 W Belmont). At the East Lakeview Neighbors meeting, neighbors heard from a representative of the Chicago Department of Transportation (CDOT) about potential traffic safety improvements on Inner Lakeshore Drive between Belmont and Grace in response to several recent crashes. We want to give a big thank you to all the neighbors who came out to learn more and advocate for safer streets! You can learn more about the details in our infrastructure section.
These neighborhood meetings are an important way for us to stay connected, hear concerns directly from the community, and share updates about what is happening in the ward. Thank you to both Buena Park Neighbors and East Lakeview Neighbors for the invitation and for continuing to create spaces for neighbors to stay informed and engaged. |
|
| | I invite you to join us for our upcoming Community Conversation on March 16 at Truman College from 5:30 pm to 6:30 pm. This event will include representatives from city departments including the City Clerk’s office, Chicago Department of Public Health’s CARE team, Trilogy, and other organizations. The goal of this quarterly meeting is to create a space for neighbors to share concerns, ask questions, and work together on solutions. Safety is something we build collectively, and these conversations are an important opportunity for us to listen, collaborate, and strengthen our community together. I hope to see many of you there. |

| | It has come to our attention that large amounts of food are being dumped in various areas of the ward to feed pigeons. We want to remind neighbors that feeding pigeons is a violation of the City of Chicago ordinance.
As a reminder, dumping food in public spaces attracts rodents, creates sanitation issues, and negatively impacts the surrounding area. We ask all neighbors to help keep our ward clean and safe by refraining from feeding pigeons and reporting large food dumping when you see it.
Thank you for doing your part to keep our community healthy and welcoming for everyone.

Tuesday, March 24th at 6 pm CT Join us Tuesday, March 24th at 6 PM for a screening of Elizabeth Nichols' 2024 documentary, Flying Lessons.
Elizabeth Nichols’ Flying Lessons is a beautiful ode to a New York City Lower East Side artist as well as to the larger “dying breed” that once roamed the streets of Alphabet City, performing in its now extinct clubs. Importantly, it’s also a call to end rampant gentrification and a love story between director and character all rolled into one. When their Lower East Side building comes under siege by a predatory landlord, a young filmmaker and an aging punk artist forge an unlikely friendship. As the two women collaborate on a portrait of a creative life amidst NYC’s cultural crisis, they discover what it means to be neighbors. The film will be followed by a discussion led by ONE Northside and all proceeds will go towards supporting their work. |

Camry Parking Lot ExpansionThe Chicago Cubs recently filed an application to amend their existing Planned Development to expand the Camry Parking Lot by approximately 250 spaces. The Planned Development (PD) is located entirely within the 44th Ward, but I understand that many 46th Ward neighbors, particularly those living on Alta Vista, are deeply impacted by the proposal.
The PD amendment will need to be reviewed by the Chicago Plan Commission before approval and has not yet been granted support from me or Alderman Lawson. I encourage 46th Ward neighbors to continue providing feedback to my office for consideration. |

Several months ago, a neighbor was critically injured crossing the street at the intersection of Addison and Inner Lakeshore Drive. As soon as my office became aware of this, I requested that the Chicago Department of Transportation (CDOT) conduct a traffic study to review the area — Inner Lakeshore Drive between Stratford and Grace — and suggest any and all potential infrastructure changes at this location that could improve pedestrian safety and reduce the chance of additional crashes. We also shared a petition with more than 500 neighbors’ signatures, and we have reiterated our request for significant measures to improve pedestrian safety on this corridor.
I want to make sure CDOT is doing all that it can to ensure that nobody else becomes a victim of traffic violence, not only along the lakefront, but across the 46th Ward and the city of Chicago as a whole. On Tuesday evening, a CDOT representative joined us at an East Lakeview Neighbors meeting to take questions and feedback from neighbors about the infrastructure changes they are proposing on Inner Lakeshore Drive. You can review the traffic study, meeting presentation, and associated documents here - please let us know what you think!
These proposed measures are just the first step to making the Inner Drive a safer street for pedestrians, and my office will continue advocating with CDOT for additional measures. |
