As we prepare to celebrate Juneteenth across the 21st Ward, we are reminded of the strength, resilience, and unity that define our community. Juneteenth is more than a holiday—it is a celebration of freedom, progress, and the generations of Black leaders, families, entrepreneurs, and change makers who have shaped our neighborhoods and our city.
This year's celebration comes on the heels of two severe storms that impacted our community and much of Chicago. Before highlighting the many events and celebrations taking place throughout the ward, I want to once again thank the city crews, first responders, utility workers, and emergency personnel who worked tirelessly to restore power, clear debris, remove hazardous trees, and help our neighborhoods recover. Your dedication has not gone unnoticed, and our community is grateful for your service.
As recovery efforts continue, residents are encouraged to report any storm-related damage or service requests by calling 3-1-1, using the CHI311 mobile app, or visiting 311.Chicago.gov. Residents can also complete the Residential Self-Assessment Survey through the Office of Emergency Management and Communications (OEMC) and the Illinois Emergency Management Agency (IEMA). The information collected will help local and state officials assess storm impacts and determine whether additional assistance options may be available. While completing the survey does not guarantee financial assistance, it plays an important role in helping emergency management officials understand the extent of damages across our communities and plan accordingly.
This week, you'll find a special Juneteenth Events Guide in this newsletter highlighting celebrations taking place throughout the 21st Ward, including events with Angel of God Church, We Sow We Grow Farm, the Far South Juneteenth Festival, the Kroc Center, and Commissioner Stanley Moore's Juneteenth Festival. I encourage everyone to take part in these celebrations and honor the culture, achievements, and legacy that continue to strengthen our community. The week of celebration officially began with the City of Chicago's annual Juneteenth Flag Raising Ceremony at Daley Plaza, whereI joined elected officials, community leaders, and residents in honoring the significance of Juneteenth and recognizing the enduring contributions of Black Americans to our city and nation.

The spirit of Juneteenth was on full display as residents gathered for the Annual Juneteenth Celebration at 94th & Ashland. Families enjoyed live entertainment, local vendors, great food, community resources, and activities for all ages while supporting Black-owned businesses and connecting with neighbors. More than a celebration, the event served as a powerful reminder of the history, resilience, and progress that Juneteenth represents, bringing the community together to honor the past while looking toward the future.
