Dear Neighbor,
The Chicago Department of Public Health (CDPH) has notified our office that mosquito surveillance has identified a need for mosquito spraying in portions of the 41st Ward after mosquitoes in the area tested positive for West Nile virus.
Tentative Spray Date:
Tomorrow, Wednesday, July 29
Evening hours (weather permitting)
Spray Area:
The planned treatment area includes portions of the 41st Ward generally bounded by:
- East River Road (east)
- Cumberland Avenue (west)
- Higgins Road (south)
- Argyle Street (north)
The purpose of the spraying is to reduce the mosquito population and help limit the spread of West Nile virus. Please note that CDPH only conducts spraying in areas where mosquito testing confirms the presence of West Nile virus.
The mosquito control product used by the City is applied in very low amounts and is considered safe when used as directed. As an added precaution, residents are encouraged to remain indoors during spraying and for approximately 30 minutes after the application is complete.
You Can Help Prevent Mosquitoes
Everyone can help reduce mosquito breeding by taking a few simple steps:
- Empty standing water from containers around your home at least once a week.
- Keep gutters and downspouts clean and flowing properly.
- Remove or cover items that can collect water, such as tires, toys, buckets, and flowerpots.
- Use window and door screens to keep mosquitoes out.
- Apply EPA-approved insect repellent when spending time outdoors.
West Nile virus is spread through the bite of an infected mosquito. While most people who become infected experience no symptoms, some can develop serious illness. Reducing mosquito breeding sites is one of the most effective ways to protect yourself and your family.
Warm regards,
Anthony Napolitano
41st Ward Alderman
