Dear neighbors,
On Friday, I was fortunate enough to participate in the Celebration of Life for the late Reverend Jesse Jackson. It was a beautiful celebration of his life and legacy and called for us all to reflect on Rev. Jackson’s life’s work: turning the promise of civil rights into real economic, political, and social power for marginalized people. Whether you were a fan of his or not, no one can deny the impact he had as a leader in this country around the world and more importantly, right here in Chicago. One quote of Rev. Jackson’s that has always resonated with me is “Never look down on anybody unless you're helping him up.” Being in a position to help others is a privilege I take seriously and today, as we paid tribute to Rev. Jackson, it’s a call to action for all of us to do our part to fight for justice and equity.
On Tuesday, I attended the groundbreaking ceremony for the new Chicago Fire Stadium at The 78. The owner of the Fire, Joe Mansueto, is funding the construction privately. Prior to approval of the project by the Plan Commission. I worked with Ald. Pat Dowell to organize a meeting with community leaders to discuss their concerns and questions about the stadium project. Since then, I’ve heard from individuals and community groups about concerns related to gentrification, affordable housing, increasing property taxes and access to economic opportunities. The Fire stadium is the first phase of development on the property. With 63 acres of land, there should be much more. As development expands, I am committed to staying engaged in the process and when the time comes, will hold public meetings in the ward. I’ve included some more information on The 78 below.
It’s the season for White Sox parking! Residents with vehicles registered to the City within the Sox Residential Parking area will be receiving car decals and a supply of guest passes in the mail. Those who aren’t within the zone or who did not receive their packet in the mail will be able to pick up stickers and passes from the office beginning March 23.
Early voting is going on throughout the city right now! The full list of ward by ward early voting sites can be found here. I highly recommend early voting. If you plan to Vote By Mail, I suggest dropping your ballot off at the early voting location, McGuane Park, rather than mailing it if you can. If you have to mail it, please do so no later than March 12th. That leaves time for the post office to process your ballot – the United States Postal Service no longer postmarks mail the same day you drop it off to a mailbox or post office.
The Air Force Academy High School is looking for a new name as they deaffiliate with the U.S. Air Force and transition into becoming an Army JROTC school. They are looking for additional input such as what mascot they should change to, school colors, and general feedback regarding the school. The survey form is here.
We saw former White Sox second baseman Micah Johnson visiting Minnie Miñoso elementary this week to read from his bestselling children’s book as part of Read Across America Day! Thanks to Micah for spreading his love of reading and love of art.
How are you celebrating Women’s History Month? The Heritage Museum of Asian Art at 3500 S. Morgan had an International Women’s Day gathering today. There was also a free panel at the Ramova Loft. If you have an event to share, please email us at [email protected].
Public Safety
More information has emerged about a burglary that happened in early January at 3600 S. Lowe, where one of the identified suspects is detained awaiting trial and one is out on electronic monitoring There are two things to be wary of from the story that may apply more widely. One, if someone asks to access your backyard, be very wary–remind seniors in your life that they don’t have to let them in. Second, if you see any vehicles with a covered license plate, please report it to the police or take note of it.
I’m saddened to report one of the men who was shot during an altercation at the 300 block of West 29th Street last Saturday has passed away. My deepest condolences to his family, and I hope the attacker is brought to justice.
