Summary

Alderman Samantha Nugent’s 39th Ward newsletter focuses on community events and public service updates, including upcoming neighborhood festivals and a reminder about expected heavy rain and the City’s Rainblocker system that can cause ponding for 12–24 hours after storms. The only ward-related policy items mentioned are administrative/permit guidance for Halloween block party street closures and staff availability for constituent support; no specific zoning, housing, transit, or budget meetings/hearings or development approvals are listed. Other major items include a video gaming terminal licenses press conference at City Hall and mentions of several fall events and clinics around the ward (e.g., an Irish Community Services vaccination clinic on Oct. 21).

Dear Neighbors,

There’s nothing I enjoy more than seeing our neighbors come together to celebrate what makes the 39th Ward such a special place to call home.

Last weekend, the Gladstone Park Chamber of Commerce and Gladstone Park Neighborhood Association hosted their 10th annual Throwback Music Fest. Neighbors come together for three days of great food, music, and fun.

I am also looking forward to attending the Bryn Mawr Block Party this Sunday, September 20th from 10am - 6pm. This festival is a celebration of the Hollywood North Park community and the many local, independent businesses in the area.

Dozens of blocks have applied for Halloween Block Party Permits. If your block would like to join, you can apply for a Halloween street closure here: Block Party Application Form. Please note that consecutive blocks cannot be closed and applications must be received by Friday, October 16th. My office is happy to assist if you have any questions about the process.

Whether we’re celebrating the traditions that make our neighborhoods vibrant or recognizing the people who have helped shape them, they give us a chance to come together and appreciate the community we’ve built.

Lastly, we are expecting a high volume of rain this weekend. The City of Chicago’s sewer inlets have an inlet control called a Rainblocker that limits water intake during heavy rainfall events to prevent overwhelming the stormwater system. This can result in water ponding on your street for 12-24 hours following the heaviest storms, but it helps to prevent sewage backup into basements. If you notice any standing water in your street for more than a day following the storms, please report that to my office or 311 so that we can schedule a drain cleaning.

As always, my office is here to help. We are located at 4200 W. Lawrence Ave. and are open Mondays from 9:00 am to 7:00 pm, Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm, and Fridays from 9:00 am to 3:00 pm. Please contact us at 773.736.5594 or [email protected] if you need any city services or have any questions.

Best,

Alderman Samantha Nugent

39th Ward Updates

Throwback Music Fest
First Responders Heroes Celebration
I was honored to join the Gladstone Park Chamber of Commerce, Gladstone Park Neighborhood Association, 16th District Police, and Alderman Jim Gardiner at Throwback Music Fest's annual First Responders Heroes Celebration.
Video Gaming Terminal Licenses
I joined small business owners and colleagues for a press conference at City Hall, calling on the Mayor and the Department of Business Affairs to issue Video Gaming Terminal licenses. With Chicago facing significant budget pressures, the City cannot afford to leave potential revenue on the table. Ensuring that approved licenses are processed and that this revenue reaches the City is essential to supporting Chicago’s financial needs.
Queen of All Saints Oktoberfest
I enjoyed visiting with constituents at Queen of All Saint's annual Oktoberfest celebration. This is a great way to kick off the fall season with good food and great friends.
Willie Greene Street Dedication
I joined my colleague Alderwoman Angela Clay in dedicating Montrose Harbor Drive to the memory of Willie Greene. Mr. Greene owned Park Bait Shop at the Montrose Harbor and he and his family taught many how to fish. Mr. Greene's daughter Stacey and her family live in the 39th Ward, and I am honored that I was invited to share in the celebration.
