A Message from Alderman Sigcho-Lopez – September 2025
On behalf of the 25th Ward Office, I want to extend my warmest greetings to you as we enter September, a month filled with celebration, movement, and community.
We began with Labor Day, a holiday rooted in the courage of working people who came together to demand dignity, fair wages, and safe conditions. It’s a reminder that progress is built through solidarity, and here in our ward, we honor those values by standing alongside working families and ensuring our communities remain places of opportunity and justice.
This month also marks the start of major infrastructure improvements. On Tuesday, September 2, the Chicago Department of Transportation will begin the Complete Street Project along S. Kedzie Avenue from W. 28th Street to S. Archer Avenue. Construction is expected to last 12 weeks, weather permitting.
We are also proud to host an Expungement Workshop this Saturday, September 6, from 10 AM to 1 PM at the 25th Ward Office. Access to a clean slate opens doors to jobs, housing, and stability; so I encourage anyone who may benefit to preregister by calling 773-523-4100 or emailing [email protected].
September is also a time to celebrate health and movement. We invite you to join one (or more!) of our local 5Ks: St. Pius 5K on September 20, Child Link 5K on September 27, and Mas Flow 5K on September 28. Whether you’re running, walking, or cheering on neighbors, these events highlight the importance of staying active and supporting community causes.
Of course, no September in our ward would be complete without the joy and pride of Mexican Independence Day. This month we will gather for two parades: the 18th Street Parade on Saturday, September 6 at 12pm and the 26th Street Parade on Sunday, September 14 at 12pm and El Grito Pilsen on Monday, Sept. 15th at 5pm. These traditions reflect the resilience, culture, and unity that make Pilsen, Little Village, our ward and affluent communities across the city so vibrant.
While we celebrate, I also want to highlight important public safety measures. Due to a heightened security level this year, the Chicago Police Department will enact rolling street closures from Friday, September 12 through Sunday, September 14, and possibly extending into Monday, September 15 and Tuesday, September 16, in response to caravaning activity. These closures will mainly affect the Loop, South Loop, West Loop, and Pilsen areas. During these times, residents and visitors will need valid ID, a work ID, or proof of address (such as a utility bill or official mail) to enter restricted areas. Please plan ahead and help inform neighbors and local businesses.

En nombre de la Oficina del Distrito 25, quiero expresarles mi más cordial saludo al comenzar septiembre, un mes lleno de celebración, movimiento y comunidad.
Comenzamos con el Día del Trabajo, una festividad que tiene sus raíces en el coraje de las y los trabajadores que se unieron para exigir dignidad, salarios justos y condiciones seguras. Es un recordatorio de que el progreso se construye a través de la solidaridad, y aquí en nuestro distrito honramos esos valores al apoyar a las familias trabajadoras y garantizar que nuestras comunidades sigan siendo lugares de oportunidad y justicia.
Este mes también marca el inicio de importantes mejoras de infraestructura. El martes 2 de septiembre, el Departamento de Transporte de Chicago (CDOT) comenzará el proyecto Complete Street a lo largo de la avenida S. Kedzie, desde W. 28th Street hasta S. Archer Avenue. Se prevé que las obras duren 12 semanas, si el clima lo permite.
También nos enorgullece organizar un Taller de Eliminación de Antecedentes Penales este sábado 6 de septiembre, de 10:00 AM a 1:00 PM en la Oficina del Distrito 25. Tener un historial limpio abre puertas al empleo, la vivienda y la estabilidad, por lo que animo a todas las personas que puedan beneficiarse a que se preinscriban llamando al 773-523-4100 o enviando un correo electrónico a [email protected].
Septiembre es también un mes para celebrar la salud y el movimiento. Les invitamos a participar en una (¡o varias!) de nuestras carreras locales de 5K: St. Pius 5K el 20 de septiembre, Child Link 5K el 27 de septiembre y Mas Flow 5K el 28 de septiembre. Ya sea que corran, caminen o animen a sus vecinos, estos eventos resaltan la importancia de mantenerse activos y apoyar las causas de la comunidad.
Por supuesto, ningún septiembre en nuestro distrito estaría completo sin la alegría y el orgullo del Día de la Independencia de México. Este mes nos reuniremos para tres celebraciones: el desfile de la calle 18 el sábado 6 de septiembre a las 12:00 PM, el desfile de la calle 26 el domingo 14 de septiembre a las 12:00 PM, y El Grito Pilsen el lunes 15 de septiembre a las 5:00 PM. Estas tradiciones reflejan la resistencia, la cultura y la unidad que hacen que Pilsen, Little Village, nuestro distrito y comunidades en toda la ciudad sean tan vibrantes.
Mientras celebramos, también quiero destacar importantes medidas de seguridad pública. Debido al aumento del nivel de seguridad este año, el Departamento de Policía de Chicago cerrará calles de forma escalonada desde el viernes 12 de septiembre hasta el domingo 14 de septiembre, y posiblemente hasta el lunes 15 y martes 16 de septiembre, en respuesta a la actividad de caravanas. Estos cierres afectarán principalmente a las áreas de Loop, South Loop, West Loop y Pilsen. Durante este tiempo, los residentes y visitantes necesitarán un documento de identidad válido, una identificación laboral o un comprobante de domicilio (como una factura de servicios públicos o correo oficial) para ingresar a las zonas restringidas. Les pedimos que planifiquen con anticipación e informen a sus vecinos y a los comercios locales.
Como siempre, nuestra oficina está aquí para servirles. Ya sea conectando a las familias con recursos, apoyando eventos comunitarios o abogando por la equidad y las oportunidades, seguimos comprometidos con la construcción de un distrito basado en la solidaridad y el cuidado de todos.
