Dear Neighbors,
I hope everyone enjoyed a relaxing and well-deserved Fourth of July weekend! As we officially settle into summer, our calendar is filling up with opportunities to get out into the community, stay informed, and connect with neighbors across the ward.
We kicked off the week with a Meet & Greet at Buena Shores, spending the evening connecting with neighbors right where they live. I always appreciate these gatherings because they create space for meaningful conversations, questions, and updates about everything happening throughout the ward. Over pizza and great conversation, we discussed neighborhood priorities and heard directly from neighbors about what matters most to them. Thank you to the Buena Shores team for hosting us, we always appreciate the opportunity to bring our office a little closer to home.

I am also thrilled to celebrate a major milestone for one of our incredible 46th Ward partners, CircEsteem. This week, City Council's Committee on Special Events, Cultural Affairs, and Recreation approved approximately $550,000 in Open Space Impact Fee funds for the future CircEsteem Plaza at Sheridan and Lakeside. CircEsteem blends circus arts and social intervention to support whole-person development, social inclusion, artistic expression, and life skills, especially youth navigating heightened barriers and stressors. This investment will help transform the space outside CircEsteem into a vibrant public gathering space that reflects the organization's creativity and deep roots in our community.
It was important for me to intentionally engage young people in this development process. We surveyed young people at CircEsteem and McCutcheon on two potential plaza designs, giving them a voice in shaping what this future community space will look like. Congratulations to the entire CircEsteem team on this exciting milestone, we can't wait to see this vision become a reality! I’m grateful that my peers Alderman Andre Vasquez (40th), Alderman Matt Martin (47th), Alderwoman Leni Manaa-Hoppenworth (48th), and Alderwoman Maria Hadden (49th) for sharing a similar approach to community engagement and co-sponsoring our Green Infrastructure Strategy Northside Listening Session last week at Truman College. As climate changes bring new weather trends to Chicago, I appreciate neighbors, community organizations, and leaders from the 40th, 47th, 48th, and 49th Wards for taking the time to discuss we can better manage stormwater, reduce flooding, and build a more resilient future for our communities.
Thank you for taking the time to attend, ask thoughtful questions, and contribute valuable feedback. Your voices will help shape a greener, more sustainable North Side for years to come.

Speaking of shaping the future of our community, there's still time to help decide what neighborhood improvements you'd like to see in the 46th Ward! Our Community Budget idea submission period is open through July 31, and we're inviting every neighbor to share ideas for how our ward's infrastructure funding should be invested.
Whether it's safer streets, better sidewalks, new public spaces, traffic calming, or other neighborhood improvements, your voice matters! Be sure to scan the QR code below or submit your ideas here before the July 31 deadline.

| Neighbors, we are just three weeks away from our biggest event of the year, our annual Back to School Bash! Join us on August 1 at Clarendon Park for an exciting day of free school supplies, helpful community resources, delicious food, and family-friendly activities. Together, we’ll make sure our young people start the school year feeling supported, celebrated, and ready to shine.
Last year, our community came together to welcome well over 1,000 neighbors and families, and thanks to generous donations both big and small, we were able to distribute hundreds of backpacks and school supplies to students across the ward. This year, we're hoping to reach even more families, but we can't do it without you. No donation is too small to make a difference and we are now accepting donations at our office and via our Amazon Wishlist!
If you would like to support, my office is now accepting in-kind donations of new school supplies, backpacks, lunch boxes, pencils, notebooks, folders, markers, crayons, calculators, and more.
We’re also currently looking for partners to help make this year even bigger. If you’re interested in sponsoring, hosting a resource table, leading an activation, performing, or collaborating in any way, please fill out our interest form.
We’re also seeking volunteers to support the day-of event. Last year, 25+ volunteers helped make the bash a success and we’re hoping to grow that team even more this year. If you’re interested in volunteering, sign up today!
Thank you for helping us ensure every student starts the school year with the tools they need to succeed.

| Last but certainly not least, if you're looking for a meaningful way to kick off your Friday while learning how to better prepare for the increasingly hot summers we're experiencing, join us today from 5:00–7:00 PM at Clarendon Park (4501 N Clarendon) for a free community screening of the documentary Cooked.
In partnership with the People's Response Network, this powerful film explores the impact of extreme heat on communities and the importance of preparedness, resilience, and looking out for one another during heat emergencies. We'll also have a community discussion, resources, and information on how you can stay safe this summer. We hope to see you there!
Wishing you another great weekend in summertime Chi! |

It's everyone's favorite time of year, soccer season! Whether you're gearing up for the World Cup, following your favorite club, or simply looking to represent your roots, there's one place in the 46th Ward that's been helping neighbors do just that for more than 25 years: Play Soccer Inc., located at 4717 N. Clark St.

Owner Mr. Centeno has dedicated much of his life to the beautiful game. A lifelong soccer fan, player, and supporter, he turned that passion into a business when he opened Play Soccer Inc. 26 years ago. What began as a neighborhood soccer shop has grown into a destination for fans across Chicago, offering authentic and replica jerseys, apparel, equipment, and gear representing clubs and national teams from around the world.

Play Soccer Inc. is more than just a retail store. It is a gathering place for soccer lovers of every generation and every background. In a neighborhood as diverse as ours, the shop reflects the global nature of the game, helping neighbors proudly represent the teams and countries they love.
Over the years, Mr. Centeno has shared in countless unforgettable soccer moments with the community, from supporting the Chicago Fire to celebrating Argentina's Copa América Championship in 2024. Through it all, his love for the sport has remained the driving force behind everything he does.
Beyond the jerseys and equipment, Mr. Centeno continues to invest in the community by offering discounts for local organizations and hosting special events, including an upcoming Trading Cards Event tomorrow, Saturday, July 11 at 4 pm at Play Soccer, located at 4717 N. Clark St.
As the World Cup excitement continues to build this summer, there's no better time to stop in and pick up a jersey from Play Soccer at 4717 N Clark St, Chicago, IL 60640!
Business Hours:
Monday–Friday: 10:00 AM – 8:00 PM Saturday: 10:00 AM – 6:00 PM Sunday: Closed

Zoning Change - 3853 N. Janssen

The owner of 3853 N. Janssen is seeking a zoning change to enable the reconstruction of an enclosed rear 3-flat enclosed sunroom / porch that has suffered extensive termite damage and needs to be rebuilt from the ground up. No change to the existing building footprint is proposed aside from a new exterior rear porch and stairs, compliant with existing zoning and rear yard requirements.
The owners plan to rehabilitate and preserve the entire building - which is currently in a state of severe disrepair – as a three-flat, and are adding a new basement accessory dwelling unit (ADU). The ADU is allowed by-right under the current zoning. A small variation is being also sought to ensure a viable front stairwell for the ADU. The proposal was reviewed and unanimously supported by a board meeting of the Southport Neighbors Association on Monday, June 1.
I am excited to support this zoning change to facilitate the rehabilitation and preservation of this beautiful existing grey-stone three-flat; if you want to learn more about the project, check it out on our Zoning and Development page. |

New Streetlights Coming to Sheridan Road (Montrose to Buena)
Neighbors, you may have noticed even more orange no-parking signs on Sheridan between Buena and Montrose!
These restrictions are in place to enable CDOT (Chicago Department of Transportation) contractors to install new and more reliable street lights on this stretch of Sheridan. Given the limited extent of this segment, CDOT anticipates the project will be fully completed by Labor Day weekend in September, weather permitting.
Crews will install new streetlights with "piggy-back" lights (which provide better sidewalk illumination) over the next several weeks. Once the new streetlights are installed, electrified, and functioning, crews will remove the old ones. Afterward, they will complete concrete and asphalt restoration as necessary.
We understand that streetwork across the ward can cause parking challenges, and we are doing our best to keep all projects on track and on time. If you have any questions or concerns about this work, please reach out to our office! |
|
|
Alley Reconstruction - Malden / Magnolia / Leland / Lawrence!
Malden / Magnolia neighbors, good news! Your alley reconstruction project is moving ahead of schedule!
Several weeks ago, CDOT (Chicago Department of Transportation) crews began the long-awaited project to rebuild the alley bound by Malden, Magnolia, Leland, and Lawrence.
Over the course of construction, crews will remove the current asphalt surface and replace it with more durable concrete, replace existing catch basins and drainage structures as needed, and replace utility structures as needed to ensure proper drainage and sloping. If there are no delays, CDOT estimates that the work should be complete by the week of August 10 at the latest. Work is currently progressing faster than expected.
This week, contractors completed adjusting manholes and drainage structures and completed most of the excavation and subsurface preparation. If the weather cooperates, crews will complete excavation, frame, and begin pouring concrete by next Friday. During construction, the alleys will be inaccessible for neighbors, and barricades will block all entrances. This means there are impacts to trash pickup and parking.
Trash Pickup:
Trash pickup will take place from the street, in front of residences, rather than off the alley. At this point, all trash cans and dumpsters should have been relocated to the street. If your dumpster has not been moved yet, please reach out to our office ASAP and we will coordinate dumpster relocation with the contractors.
We know that trash collection on the street is inconvenient and takes away much-needed street parking, but unfortunately it is the only option.
Parking:
Neighbors will be unable to access garages and rear parking spaces during construction, and will need to find alternative off-street parking or rely on street parking. We know that the loss of alley access is extremely disruptive; however, this alley reconstruction is a once-in-a-lifetime project and this alley will not host similar work again for many decades.
Additional Questions?
Please reach out to our office by phone (773-878-4646) or email ([email protected]) if you have any questions or concerns!

| Say Goodbye to Potholes on Sheridan!
In May, Chicago Department of Transportation (CDOT) contractors began resurfacing Sheridan Road between Montrose and Foster to fix the wear and tear on the street. The resurfacing project includes pedestrian safety improvements, including curb extensions and paint-and-post bump-outs opposite of “T” intersections for traffic safety.
Resurfacing work is almost complete! Crews paved the northern and southern sections of the corridor earlier this week, and will pave the middle section once new drainage structures are installed at Lakeside and Sheridan as part of the construction on the plaza in front of CircEsteem. Once asphalt work has been completed, crews will install the final signage and road striping. Resurfacing Construction RemindersDuring construction, signs will often be posted to limit parking during workdays to enable construction access. Please move your vehicle to avoid tickets. Parking will generally remain available overnight and on weekends. Be sure to check signage.
If you have questions or concerns, please reach out to the 46th Ward office at 773-878-4646 or via email at [email protected].
If you want to learn more about the project, check out the presentation from our online briefing on our website! |

As Chicago continues to experience significant growth in logistics and warehouse facilities, it is essential to understand how neighbors, businesses, and community stakeholders perceive these developments and are affected by them. University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC) has developed a survey aimed at gauging community acceptability and exploring the broader implications of warehouse growth across the city and surrounding region.

| | Water Main 4600 - 4800 N. Racine! Racine Update July 10
In May, the Department of Water Management (DWM) began work on a project to replace the water main on Racine between Wilson and Broadway. This project entails replacing the existing - more than 120 year-old! - water main and replacement of all existing lead service lines along this stretch of Racine.
As of today (Friday, July 10), crews have installed the new water main, connected it to the existing water system, and disinfected the new sections of pipe. Contractors have also replaced several sewer main sections that needed repair.
On Monday, July 13, crews will begin replacing the water service lines that connect the water main to individual homes and businesses. This stage of work will take up to 2-3 months, as it includes replacing every service line to at least the B-Box, and completely replacing all lead service lines all the way into residences and businesses. Service line replacements will entail brief individual water shutoffs as homes are transferred from one service line to another, and crews will alert neighbors about any upcoming shutoffs in advance of any work being done.
During the next phase of work, parking restrictions will be limited to the locations where crews need to station equipment and access service lines.
As always, neighbors can expect to park along Racine through the weekend. No work or parking restrictions are anticipated next week.
Please let us know if you have any questions or concerns!
