May 29, 2026 Dear Neighbors,
I think, based on the weather, it’s safe to say the warmer days are finally here to stay! Before heading into Memorial Day weekend, I had the opportunity to visit The Salvation Army’s College for Officer Training (700 W. Brompton), where leaders from across the Midwest are prepared for service and ministry.
Thank you to Major Catherine Mount for leading a thoughtful tour of the campus and sharing more about the work happening there. I learned that Salvation Army officers are trained as pastors and serve communities not just locally, but across 134 countries, with a presence in every zip code in the United States.
We had the chance to walk through the beautiful campus, including the manor building with its 14 fireplaces, and connect with instructors and students who welcomed us into their learning spaces. I especially appreciated the opportunity to briefly speak with students about the 46th Ward and my role as Alderwoman.
Many thanks to the entire Salvation Army team for your hospitality and for the important work you do every day. |

As the 2025–2026 school year begins to wrap up, we’ve been spending time celebrating students, teachers, and school communities across the ward. This week, I stopped by Disney Magnet School for their Field Day and a special celebration with Cubs Charities recognizing Disney as a recipient of the Diamond Project.
The Diamond Project is Cubs Charities’ flagship investment program supporting baseball and softball field improvements and expanding access to safe, high-quality spaces for young people to play and grow through sports. Through this partnership, Disney students will benefit from continued investment in youth recreation and outdoor spaces right here in our community.
It was wonderful getting to celebrate alongside students, staff, neighbors and Cubs Charities as the school year comes to a close. Thank you to Disney Magnet for welcoming us, and congratulations on this exciting recognition! Special shoutout to second-grader A’bria for her rap performance, which made all of us so proud!

| I also took a trip down the Broadway corridor from Irving Park to Sheridan connecting directly with local businesses and discussing ways to further support our small business community here in the 46th Ward.
Throughout the walkthrough, I connected with businesses including Che Thai, Brows Threading, Windy City Gyros, Paradise Pet Salon & Spa Too, and Royal Flesh Tattoo & Piercing. I chatted with Marta at Paradise Pet Salon about her business and the importance of keeping strong neighborhood connections, and had the opportunity to connect with Nick, owner of Royal Flesh, about his shop and continued investment in the corridor.
These visits are an important reminder that supporting small businesses means showing up consistently, listening directly to owners and staff, and helping connect businesses with city and ward resources whenever possible. From conversations around foot traffic and safety to beautification and corridor improvements, we appreciated the honest feedback and thoughtful ideas shared throughout the day.
Thank you to every business that welcomed me in, took the time to speak with me and continues investing in our neighborhood every single day. Our local businesses are a huge part of what makes 46 feel connected, vibrant, and resilient, and we’re excited to continue building those relationships throughout the summer. |

Speaking of ward schools and celebrations, I had the opportunity to join the not-so-small-anymore humans at Brennemann Elementary for their 8th grade graduation ceremony! It’s always incredibly special to celebrate these milestones with our young people, their families, teachers, and school staff who have supported them every step of the way. Watching these babies close out one chapter and prepare for the next is a reminder of just how much talent, resilience, and potential exists within our ward schools.
Congratulations to the entire graduating class at Brennemann and to all graduating students, from kindergarten through college! We are so proud of you and excited to see all that comes next. 🎓 |

| There are some places you walk into and immediately feel taken care of, and Tiztal Cafe (4631 N. Clark St) is absolutely one of them.
My office had the chance to sit down with Teresa, the owner of Tiztal, this week and hear more about the story behind one of Uptown’s favorite breakfast and brunch spots. Originally from Mexico, Teresa has lived in Chicago for over 30 years, with chapters of her journey taking her through California, Utah, flea markets, juice bars, and eventually right here to Uptown. Before Tiztal, she ran a juice bar for 17 years in the Mega Mall from opening day until it closed, later building a loyal following through fresh juices at a Utah flea market before teaming up with a friend to bring food into the mix. After a few years of partnership, Teresa became the sole owner and has been pouring love into Tiztal full time since its opening in 2008.

And honestly? You can feel that love the second you walk in. The space feels warm, welcoming, and deeply cared for. Teresa carries that same energy too, equal parts strict and incredibly sweet, with the kind of presence that makes you feel like you’re in good hands. The restaurant is family-run, community-rooted, and built around creating an experience people remember. She shared that one of the things she loves most is hearing customers come back and tell her how much they enjoyed their time there, and based on the packed tables and loyal regulars, it’s easy to see why.
Their famous chilaquiles are the standout favorite (and according to just about everyone, some of the best in the city ), but neighbors also rave about the fresh juices, oatmeal shakes, garlic potatoes, and warm hospitality.

Tiztal is open Thursday through Tuesday from 8 AM to 3 PM and closed Wednesdays.
Please continue showing this small business some love. Spaces like Tiztal are part of what makes Uptown feel like home

We had another houseless neighbor picnic for the books! The sun was shining, the soda was flowing and the pups were out! This summer we are collaborating with the 48th Ward to bring resources, care and food to neighbors living across the lakefront. We talked with neighbors about supply needs for the warmer months, keeping tent areas clean and tidy and structural barriers to accessing housing. All of the neighbors we met are on the Coordinated Entry List and are currently waiting for housing. Shout out to the Department of Family and Supportive Services (DFSS) for the consistent outreach they do to our houseless neighbors to ensure their basic needs are met and that neighbors are on the path to housing. Thank you as always to our partners at Montrose Behavioral Health, Liberate the 46th Ward Mutual Aid and Northside Action For Justice!
Our next picnic will be on July 1st from 12-2pm at the corner of Lawrence and Marine Dr! Our office is collecting disposable ice packs, cotton socks, beach umbrellas, portable phone chargers and gently used sleeping bags ahead of our next picnic. If you have any supplies to share, please drop them off at our office before July 1st. |

| | The 46th Ward is getting new neighbors! 4713 N. Clark - also known as "The Anderson" is opening up to its first tenants right now! The building has 36 units total, 6 of which fall under the Chicago Affordable Requirements Ordinance (ARO), which requires the developers to keep 20% of units at affordable rental rates.
ARO units require an application for occupancy. Applications opened on May 1st, and are still open through this link. |

Say Goodbye to Potholes on Sheridan!
Good news, neighbors!
Last week, Chicago Department of Transportation (CDOT) contractors began resurfacing Sheridan Road between Montrose and Foster to fix the wear and tear on the street. The resurfacing project includes pedestrian safety improvements, including curb extensions and paint-and-post bump-outs opposite of “T” intersections for traffic calming. Over the past week, crews have been hard to work removing the existing pavement and pouring the first layer of new asphalt to level out the existing road subsurface. That work is now nearly complete! The anticipated work for the next few weeks is shown below: June - July: Work on concrete (curbs, ADA ramps, curb extensions, and sidewalks), road subsurface (addressing gaps beneath the pavement) and utility structures. July – Early August: Final layers of asphalt, followed by striping and signage.
Additional construction will start in June on Sheridan between Foster and Bryn Mawr in the 48th Ward as part of a Department of Water Management (DWM) water main replacement project; expected to wrap up this Fall.
Resurfacing Construction RemindersDuring construction, signs will often be posted to limit parking during workdays to enable construction access. Please move your vehicle to avoid tickets. Parking will generally remain available overnight and on weekends. Be sure to check signage.
If you have questions or concerns, please reach out to the 46th Ward office at 773-878-4646 or via email at [email protected].
If you want to learn more about the project, you can check out the presentation from our online briefing on our website!

As Chicago continues to experience significant growth in logistics and warehouse facilities, it is essential to understand how neighbors, businesses, and community stakeholders perceive these developments and are affected by them. University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC) has developed a survey aimed at gauging community acceptability and exploring the broader implications of warehouse growth across the city and surrounding region.
The survey can be taken here and is available in both English and Spanish.

| | New Water Main Coming to 4600 - 4800 N. Racine!

Earlier this month, the Department of Water Management (DWM) began construction on a project to replace the water main on Racine between Wilson and Broadway. This project entails replacement of the existing - more than 120 year-old! - water main and replacement of all existing lead service lines along this stretch of Racine.
As of today (Friday, May 29), crews have completed the installation of the new water main. Next week, the work will focus on water main testing and sewer main replacement as needed. Once the sewer replacements are completed and pending successful test results, the water main will be disinfected. DWM anticipates this will take all of next week.
The water main testing requires connecting the new line to the citywide system. This, in turn, requires crews to temporarily shut down the existing water service. This shutoff is scheduled for Tuesday, June 2. On Tuesday, water service will be shut off for up to 8 hours between 8AM and 4PM.
If you have questions or concerns about the water main shutoff, please contact Dan Godley with NPL Construction at 773-554-6295.
If all goes well next week, contractors will begin replacing service lines beginning the following week, starting Monday, June 8.
As always, neighbors can expect to be able to park along Racine through the weekend. Please let us know if you have any questions or concerns!
