POLICY UPDATES FROM ALDERMAN VILLEGAS

City Council Passes Alderman Villegas' Historic Legislation to Support Veterans Hiring & Affordable Housing

Last week, City Council passed 2 pieces of legislation that I sponsored to provide Chicago veterans with greater access to City Employment & Affordable Housing Units! I was grateful to stand alongside my colleagues Alderman Bill Conway @aldconway, Alderman Chris Taliaferro, and Alderman Andre Vasquez @40thward who co-sponsored this legislation. We stand with our veteran community! Semper Fidelis ⭐️

1. The first ordinance will establish a new requirement for Veterans Preference for at least 10% of housing units under the Affordable Requirements Ordinance (ARO).
2. The 2nd ordinance will establish a City-wide Veterans Hiring Preference Program for veterans to get hired in city job positions.

APPLY FOR PROPERTY TAX SAVINGS
BY MONDAY, APRIL 29!!!

Apply for Property Tax Savings by April 29!

Tax exemption applications for the 2023 tax year are now available online. Exemptions are savings that contribute to lowering a homeowner’s property tax bill. The most common is the Homeowner Exemption, saving a property owner an average of $950 dollars each year. As a reminder, exemptions are reflected on the second installment property tax bill. See the full list of exemptions here

Here are 3 key things that homeowners should be aware of when applying for exemptions.

1. New homeowners, first-time applicants, or those that need to reapply can now do so online. Homeowners are strongly encouraged to apply online so there is a digital record of their application.

2. The automatic renewals related to COVID-19 have ended. Homeowners need to resume annual filings for the “Senior Freeze” and Veterans with Disabilities Exemptions. Seniors and Veterans that need to reapply will be mailed application booklets in the mail this month.

3. The automatic renewal of the Homeowner, Senior, and Persons with Disabilities Exemptions will continue, and postcards will be mailed to households confirming that no action is needed.

How to check your exemptions
If homeowners are unsure of their existing exemptions, they can check by reviewing their “Property Details” and review the Exemption History & Status section.

Applications are available in multiple languages
The Assessor’s Office is proud to announce that exemption forms are available in English,  Spanish, Polish, and simplified Chinese languages. Applications can be downloaded at www.cookcountyassessor.com/exemptions. Paper applications are also available at our branch offices. Click here to see a list of our branch offices and to schedule an appointment.

Join a virtual workshop
Homeowners can join virtual exemptions workshops on Facebook and YouTube at 6 p.m. on Wednesday, March 13, in English and on Thursday, March 14, in Spanish. For a list of upcoming in-person and virtual outreach events, visit www.cookcountyassessor.com/event-list.

KEEPING OUR WARD CLEAN
🚨 Stop by the 36th Ward Office to get a "Pick Up After Your Pet" Sign! With the warm weather starting up again, it's important to remind our neighbors to clean up after their pets. Let's keep our streets clean together! 🐕‍🦺

➡️ Residents, please REMOVE any and all materials that you are using in the street to save yourself a parking spot. If things are seen on the parkway, they will be moved out of the street. If they are placed there again, the Chicago Department of Streets & Sanitation will remove these materials.

🗑♻️ As always, please REPORT any excess trash you see on the streets. Put in a request to 311.chicago.gov & email a picture to [email protected]. Be sure to include the address and a description of the issue in the email. You can also call our office at 312-744-4324.

PROMOTING COMMUNITY SAFETY
- Our office works closely with the Chicago Police Department and the Cook County Sheriff's Office to respond to crimes and keep our residents safe.
- As a reminder, always CALL 911 whenever you see a crime or suspicious activity occurring. That is the only way for CPD to know when & where to target their responses.
- Attend a community meeting with your Police District! At the bottom of this email, you will find the CAPS Police Beat Meeting Schedules for the 11th, 12th, and 25th Police Districts. Find your Police District & Beat here: operations.chicagopolice.org/FindMyDistrict
