Dear Neighbors, (español a continuación)

This Hispanic Heritage Month, we’re proud to celebrate the stories, history, and contributions of our Latino community in Pilsen and Little Village. We’re excited to share that a conversation between Esmeralda Bueno and Alderman Byron Sigcho-Lopez, recorded through the Illinois Voices 250 project, was selected for production by StoryCorps Studios, giving our community’s stories an opportunity to reach an even wider audience. We invite you to listen to the full conversation and celebrate the voices and experiences that help shape our neighborhoods.

This Wednesday our Committee on Housing and Real Estate was proud to hold our first meeting since the legislative break to a packed house at City Hall. Top billing was the proposed Protecting Renters Ordinance; which includes modernization of the Residential Landlord and Tenant Ordinance (RLTO), the establishment of a rental registry, the creation of the Bureau of Rental Housing Services (RHS), and the permanent establishment of Eviction Counsel Program (ECP). The committee had over 40 public commenters signed up, received 31 written public comments, and a nearly 2 hour debate between committee members and city staff. In the end the measure passed committee with a 12-9 vote and will look to Wednesday September 23 to pass in City Council.

The TIF budget amendment has completed the Community Development Commission process and will next go before the Finance Committee on September 22 at 1:45 PM. Please note that this hearing was rescheduled from 09/21 to 09/22 as of Friday, 09/18. If approved by the Finance Committee, the City Council will consider the item on Wednesday, September 23. This legislation will allow for eligible funds to be released for projects in partnership with the Department of Housing, Chicago Park District, Chicago Public Schools and other city departments. Some of these projects include: the full repair of Western Ave. Bridge, renovations & improvements of Canal Origin and Dvorak Park’s renovation of pool locker rooms and fieldhouse.

Estimados vecinos, (English above)
