Dear Chicago,
The Chicago Police Department (22nd District) has issued a community alert regarding a ruse burglary that targeted senior citizens in the Morgan Park community. Typically, the offenders knock on the door and talk their way inside using ruse tactics such as home repairs, checking electricity/plumbing, or trimming trees on the property. Ruse burglary offenders work in pairs, with one person distracting the victim while the other accesses the home through a different door and steals cash or valuables. A copy of the community alert is below.
Chicago Police have offered a list of warning signs to look for:
- No official ID or credentials
- License plate missing or covered
- Vehicle is parked out of clear view
- Orange safety vest with no company name or markings
- Insists that the matter is urgent
Area 2 Detectives are diligently working on this case. I urge all residents to remain vigilant and be aware of your surroundings. Please share this information with family and neighbors and call 9-1-1 to report suspicious behavior.
Sincerely,
Matthew J. O'Shea
Alderman, 19th Ward
