Neighbors,

I’m sending out an early newsletter as our office is closed tomorrow and will reopen Monday, 9/8 at 2 pm. This week we went from ribbon cuttings on Division Street to Fiesta Boricua, from new art exhibitions to community safety resources, the 26th Ward continues to show that our strength lies in resilience and joy. Here’s a look at how we are moving forward together this September:

New Businesses Bring Life to Division Street

Last Friday, we proudly joined the Puerto Rican Cultural Center, community leaders, and neighbors in celebrating the ribbon-cutting of five new businesses on Division Street. Each opening marks another step in the continued revitalization of Paseo Boricua, bringing culture, food, and community pride to our corridor.

🎲 Pe Erre, La Casa del Dominó – 2558 W. Division St. (Social Club)
🥪 Smash Jibarito – 2534 W. Division St. (Restaurant)
Dope Drip Café – 2617 W. Division St. (Restaurant)
🍲 Sara’s Cocina – 2723 W. Division St. (Restaurant)
👗 Ya Ready! – 2735 W. Division St. (Boutique)

We got our steps in walking Division from business to business, celebrating with neighbors and supporters. Along the way, we were grounded in the beautiful history and anecdotes shared by PRCC Executive Director José López, who reminded us of the legacy that makes Paseo Boricua such a vital cultural landmark. We are so excited to welcome these vibrant businesses into our community and to support them as they thrive.

Fiesta Boricua: Joy as Resistance

As Division Street came alive with ribbon cuttings, the weekend carried us straight into one of our most powerful cultural traditions: Fiesta Boricua. Division Street was alive with the sights, sounds, and flavors of Fiesta Boricua de Bandera a Bandera. From food vendors and artisans to live music and community celebrations, the pride of Barrio Borikén filled the street.

Our office proudly hosted Bingo for Seniors, bringing laughter, prizes, and connection to some of our most cherished community members. But Fiesta Boricua is more than a festival; it is a living act of resilience. In the face of ongoing attacks on our communities, our people continue to show that resistance is joy. Every song, every meal shared, and every flag raised reminded us that our culture, unity, and spirit cannot be silenced. Thank you to the Puerto Rican Cultural Center, our local businesses, artists, and every resident who made this year’s celebration unforgettable. Together, we resist. Together, we celebrate.

Honoring Heritage Through Art

Even as we celebrate, we also create new spaces to honor our heritage and lift up the arts. The National Museum of Puerto Rican Art and Culture (NMPRAC) invite you to step inside Abuela’s House, the debut exhibition from local artist Desi, inspired by her beloved grandmother. Through twenty-one intimate scenes created with paint, fabric, and found objects, this moving installation celebrates memory, love, and cultural inheritance. Meet Desi and join us in toasting the power of heritage and home at this special opening titled Abuela’s House on Saturday, September 6 from 10 AM – 2 PM.

Also, on Monday, September 8 from 4–7 PM, the NMPRAC invites you to the ribbon cutting of our brand-new Outdoor Educational Programming Space and Garden. At its heart is El Llamado (The Call), a breathtaking mosaic mural by renowned Boricua artist Celso González of Loíza, Puerto Rico. The celebration will include a meet-and-greet with Celso, an original poem written for the occasion by Chicago’s own Mayda Del Valle, and live salsa music by Stephanie Rivera and her band.

Evento Virtual de Inmigración y Conozca Sus Derechos

As we open these new cultural spaces, we are also focused on ensuring our immigrant neighbors know their rights and stay safe in the face of federal threats. As you know, we have been preparing for increased federal presence since the beginning of the year. Our coordinated efforts have been vital to keeping our neighbors, students, business owners, and festival organizers safe. Many of us still have questions, and I am glad to partner with City Council’s Committee on Immigration and Refugee Rights to offer a Virtual Know Your Rights in Spanish on Tuesday, September 9 at 6pm. Consulates from the Dominican Republic, Guatemala, Mexico, and Colombia will be able to connect, and attorneys will be able to offer guidance. Please share widely! Register here.

During the upcoming weeks, there are many ways everyone can make our communities safe. Click each image to learn more.

From opening businesses and creating art to resisting federal attacks and celebrating heritage, the 26th Ward continues to prove that our strength is in our people. Together, we walk our blocks, care for our neighbors, honor our traditions, and resist through joy.

We are resilient. We are united. And together, we keep us safe.

In Solidarity,

Alderperson Jessie Fuentes
