Thriving 21

Weekly Bulletin

May 27, 2026

Hi 21st Ward Family,

As we continue building a stronger and more connected 21st Ward, I want to thank every resident, organization, volunteer, and community partner who helped make this month’s Jackie Robinson West “Take Me Out to the Ball Game” Parade & Carnival such a success. Seeing families, youth, schools, faith leaders, local businesses, and community organizations come together in celebration reminded us of the power of unity and the importance of creating safe, positive spaces for our young people to grow and thrive.

This event represented more than the start of baseball season — it reflected the spirit of our community and the shared commitment to teamwork, mentorship, opportunity, and neighborhood pride.

Thank you to Jackie Robinson West, PlayStreets, Chicago Public Library branches Woodson, Pullman, and Brainard, Tamela Chambers, Dorric Lodge #77, Phalanx, Mariah Chapter #1, NVA Foundation, Delta Epsilon Theta, Angel of God, Samaria Chapter #1, Graduate Over Guns, Insiple Organization, Chicago Youth Works, Melissa Fab Purses, Meridian Health, Ceasefire, S2 Grill, Queen Amina Chapter #1410, After School Matters, Serve Robotics, Larry’s Barber College, the Buckner Foundation, Clean Slate, the Ward 21 team, Chicago Police Department, and every volunteer and parent who helped make the day possible.

At this month's City Council meeting, several important items impacting our ward moved forward. We proudly passed zoning and development measures that will support new housing, economic investment, and neighborhood growth across the 21st Ward — including the approval of three new single-family homes at 1223–1231 W. 112th St. by MVP Homes, Inc., and major map amendments along 105th Street and Ashland Avenue aimed at encouraging future commercial and community development opportunities.

We also passed a resolution honoring Dr. Craig M. Jenkins on his 40th Pastoral Anniversary at Beth Eden Baptist Church, recognizing his decades of faith-based leadership, service, and commitment to the community.

And as we celebrate Haitian Heritage Month, we were proud to honor Lior’s Cafe during City Council for its continued impact on the South Side of Chicago. Beyond its incredible Haitian cuisine, Lior’s has created a space centered on culture, community, and connection while helping showcase the richness of Haitian culture throughout our city.

Thank you to everyone who came out to our Town Hall and community meeting. We appreciate all of the residents who took the time to stay informed, ask questions, and engage in important conversations about the future of our community.

We heard valuable updates and presentations from the Mayor’s Office of Community Safety, Department of Family and Support Services, and GoodKids MadCity – Englewood. Residents also received updates on constituent services, ongoing development projects in the ward, recent Chicago City Council actions, and upcoming community events.

These conversations are important as we continue working together to keep our neighborhoods informed, connected, and moving forward.

Building The Thriving 21

103rd Street Corridor Peace Walk, Run & Bike Event

Community members, organizations, schools, and elected leaders came together on May 16 for the 103rd Street Corridor Peace Walk, Run & Bike Event — a cross-ward initiative focused on unity, wellness, and community connection. Participants traveled from Corliss High School to Julian High School while exploring the growing 103rd Street corridor and building stronger relationships across neighborhoods.

More than just a one-day event, the initiative highlighted the power of collaboration and what is possible when communities move together around a shared vision for a safer, stronger, and more connected Chicago.
