How 1st Ward Schools are Fighting Food Insecurity

Relevance: 3/10

Summary

Alderman Daniel La Spata of the 1st Ward announced that the office will be closed for Thanksgiving and introduced a new budget blog that details the most budget ordinances he has filed, marking a significant fiscal‑responsibility effort. He also highlighted upcoming infrastructure work on the California Ave water main and emergency gas restoration at 801 N. Ashland, and the launch of 2026 residential daily passes. The newsletter promoted community food‑insecurity initiatives, a turkey distribution to seniors, a CPD training survey, a pop‑up market, and a virtual Know Your Rights town hall.

How 1st Ward Schools are Fighting Food Insecurity

1st Ward Newsletter | November 25, 2025

Dear neighbors,

I hope everyone has something to look forward to this Thanksgiving week. Perhaps, in the midst of the chaos, there is a moment of grace, giving or gratitude to be found. I wanted to use this newsletter opening to highlight a few ways some of our schools are addressing food insecurity. This is of course not an exhaustive list; it's worth checking if your neighborhood school has its own plan for supporting the material needs of its community. I'm hoping this will be useful according to either your ability or need.

The Little Free Goethe Grocery: From Monday through Friday, 7:30-8:00 a.m. and 2:30-3:00 p.m. Goethe Elementary invites you "take what you need, give what you can." The most needed items are generally non-perishables, but also tortillas, apples, clementines, and diapers. Thank you Goethe for filling buckets everyday (Goethe Eagles know) as well as grocery bags.

Roberto Clemente Community Academy: From December 1st to December 17th, Clemente will be coordinating a food drive to support their school community's needs. Non-perishables are again the broadest need. The ward office will be participating with a donation box in our front lobby starting next week.

De Diego Elementary: Finally, De Diego Elementary is in the process of starting a food bank to support families in need. Most needed items include black beans, peanut butter, PAN Arepa Flour, and more. You can contact Bri Connor at [email protected] for details or donate directly here; as I write this they are 82% of the way to their goal!

In the past year, I have been beyond blessed to witness the 1st Ward's generosity and solidarity toward their neighbors in need. I am grateful as ever for the opportunity to serve you as alderperson.

Sincerely,

Alderman La Spata

Every year, the Chicago Police Department (CPD) provides training to CPD officers to ensure they are performing their jobs safely and fairly.
