Summary

Alderman Gilbert Villegas (36th Ward) announced he has been named Chair of the Committee on Zoning, Landmarks and Building Standards, and said the committee will meet again on May 6. He also called for a City Council hearing on HUD’s proposed “mixed-status” family rule change, which would end housing assistance for families with ineligible members. The newsletter otherwise highlights community events like Vet Connect sessions (May 5 and May 19) and a community yard sale (June 27), plus a cultural resolution passed to recognize “Borinqueneers Day” on April 13 in Chicago.

POLICY UPDATES FROM ALDERMAN VILLEGAS

🇵🇷 April 13th is now "Borinqueneers Day" in Chicago!

I was extremely happy and grateful to spotlight Puerto Rican culture, the historic 65th Infantry Regiment Borinqueneers, and pass a resolution honoring the historic all Puerto Rican unit that served in WWI, WWII, and the Korean War.

Thank you to American Legion Post #939, AfriCaribe and Veteran Roasters Cafe for helping make this a success!

✍🏽 Alderman Gilbert Villegas Named New Zoning Chair

I want to thank my colleagues for having the confidence to support me as Chair of the Committee on Zoning, Landmarks and Building Standards. I also want to thank my colleague Alderman Bennett Lawson for the tremendous work he has done. I look forward to working with him to make sure we continue moving in the right direction and keep the momentum going in the city.

The City of Chicago is the best city in the world. As the new Zoning Chairman, I am ready to build on that greatness by championing smart, inclusive development that strengthens our neighborhoods and fuels our economy.

Together, we will cut through red tape, utilize technology to modernize our systems, improve efficiency, and unlock new opportunities for every ward - designing a future where Chicago doesn't just grow, it thrives.

The hard work continues.

🏠 Called for Hearings to examine impact of Department of Housing and Urban Development's proposed mixed-status family rule change on vulnerable Chicago residents

Calling for a City Council hearing to investigate a proposed federal rule change by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) regarding "mixed-status" families.

Currently, families with both eligible and ineligible members receive prorated housing assistance, but the new rule would deny them any support, including public housing and vouchers, forcing families to choose between staying together or keeping their homes.
