June 28, 2026

Dear neighbors,

Happy Pride! I can’t believe Fourth of July is already coming up next week. The fireworks on Saturday will be an extra 15-minute extended show in honor of America’s 250th birthday!

It was a busy weekend in the 11th Ward. On Saturday, I joined the monthly family bike ride “Kidical Mass” for a safe and lovely ride with more than a dozen families. The group meets monthly. You can find more information here. As we rode along the two-mile route to Cadhino Bakery in McKinley Park, I enjoyed chatting with fellow riders and loved the sound of bike bells ringing.

After the bike ride, Commissioner John P. Daley and I headed to the Chicago Police Department’s 9th District as volunteers held the annual Officer Appreciation Lunch. It was great to see so many volunteers and businesses supporting our police officers.

Together with the Midwest Asian Health Association, the Coalition for a Better Chinese American Community, Project Vision, State Representative Theresa Mah and 20+ local associations, we held the first-ever Chinatown Community Picnic at Ping Tom Park today to help celebrate the 250th Birthday of America in one of the most American of ways – we had a massive potluck picnic. More than 2,000 people attended to enjoy cultural performances, food, and plenty of fun for the kiddos, too! Thank you to all who came out to participate today, and especially to our sponsors including R4 Services, Lakeshore Recycling Services, Lawrence’s Fisheries, Pepsi, Vienna Beef and Great Western Beef, and the organizing committee who planned the day. Many thanks to my staff, interns and the Chicago Dragons Athletic Association and their volunteers for grilling and serving more than 800 hotdogs and hamburgers.

Earlier in the week, my staff and I met up with CPD Commander Joe Mark of the 9th District and Park District staff at Taylor-Lauridsen Park for a tour of the facility’s new security cameras. The area now has 8 cameras with 14 unique views. I’m glad to have been able to direct part of our local 11th Ward “menu” budget to make this important addition to our public safety resources.

I was part of a panel with some of my fellow City Council members hosted by the Department of Business Affairs and Consumer Protection (BACP) focusing on the importance of aldermanic engagement with small businesses last week. For my part, I’ve worked hard to support our small businesses here in the community–my office has assisted in securing more than $4 million in grants to spark local business development!

I joined the Chicago Fire Department Camp Courage launch on Wednesday at Horizon Science Academy. Congratulations to three local students, Renee Holt, Lily Holt, and Amy Smith, who are embarking on an immersive and unique summer program to learn about being a firefighter or a paramedic.

We are forecasted for extreme heat this week. Please stay hydrated, and contact our office if you or a neighbor are in need of any assistance.

Have a safe week,

Nicole

This Week in City Council

Notably this week in City Council’s Finance Committee, we held a subject matter hearing regarding a proposal to change the ownership of our parking meters.

Mayor Johnson has proposed to permit the sale of the parking meters lease from Chicago Parking Meters LLC to Stonepeak, a New York investment firm. We are still working through this deal. A non-disclosure agreement signed by the Mayor’s Office has been making it difficult for us to get enough information to make a sound decision on behalf of taxpayers. We learned a bit more in Thursday’s hearing, but there is clearly still more that we need to find out. During the hearing, we discovered that the Mayor had made an offer on buying the meters back for $3.3 billion dollars, and then ultimately rescinded that offer– all of this without the knowledge of the City Council, and while we were in the midst of a contentious budget battle. Stonepeak’s bid is for $2.54 billion – roughly $800 million less than what the City bid. I have found all of these revelations to be deeply disturbing, and it’s only made me more committed to seeking transparency and accountability in our City finances.

  • As one of the largest private infrastructure investment firms, Stonepeak is connected to a number of companies, including one, Omni Air International, which has a contract with the Department of Homeland Security doing deportation flights. The representative from Stonepeak said they were in the process of selling Omni. We are still finding out more details, but many of my colleagues expressed concern about this dynamic, and I share that concern.
