Shred Day and Meds Disposal - October 11Join us this Sunday, October 11, for a free paper shredding event in the 50th Ward. The event will be from 8:30 AM to 11:30 AM in the Devon Bank parking lot, 6445 N. Western. Due to limited space in the shredding truck, early arrival is highly recommended. |
| Bring your sensitive documents to be securely destroyed. The Shred Day will also feature medication and battery disposal, courtesy of Cook County. Come down to properly dispose of expired, unused, or unwanted prescriptions, over-the-counter medication, and batteries.
For any questions, contact the West Ridge Chamber of Commerce at [email protected].
Filming NoticeThere are temporary parking and traffic restrictions in effect today and tomorrow for filming of Chicago PD in our neighborhood.
No parking signs have been posted on: Lunt (from Campbell to Western), Campbell (from Coyle to Lunt), and the west side of Western (from Estes to Morse). There will also be overnight street closures on Lunt from Campbell to Western and in several alleys.

Jefferson Township Property Tax AppealAre your property taxes too high? If you live in Jefferson Township, you can now appeal your assessment and possibly lower them for the future. Click here to find your township.
Jefferson Township is open for tax appeals through the Cook County Assessor’s Office. Property owners can file an appeal through Thursday, November 12 at www.cookcountyassessoril.gov/online-appeals.
Jefferson Township encompasses the area of the 50th Ward that is south of Devon and west of Western. For assistance filing your appeal, please contact Cook County Commissioner Josina Morita’s office at (312) 603-6383 or [email protected].
The assessment of your home is one of the most important factors in determining how much you will pay in property taxes, so it is very important that you file an appeal. Successful appeals will be reflected on second installment property tax bills issued next year in 2027.
Peterson Park Improvement Association MeetingOn Tuesday, I joined with other government offices for a meeting hosted by the Peterson Park Improvement Association (PPIA). |
| We were joined by many neighbors who care very deeply about our community. I am grateful to the PPIA and to everyone who came for their commitment to keeping the 50th Ward vibrant and growing!
Agents of Hope TourIt was a privilege to visit the 50th Ward’s own Agents of Hope this week. I am grateful for the opportunity to see firsthand the incredible work they do to support refugees and neighbors throughout our community. |
| Agents of Hope provides vital services that are open to everyone in the community, including a food pantry, adult education, employment programming, behavioral health care, and housing assistance.
Thank you to Agents of Hope for welcoming me and for all you do for our community!
Columbus Day/Indigenous Peoples’ DayThis Monday is Columbus Day, an annual commemoration of Christopher Columbus’s arrival in 1492 and a celebration of Italian-American heritage. I would like to wish a happy holiday to everyone who celebrates. In recent years, the holiday has gained opposition due to Columbus’s treatment of the native inhabitants of the Americas. There is a strong movement to rename the holiday Indigenous Peoples’ Day, in celebration of Native American culture. More information can be found here.
The 50th Ward Office will be closed for the holiday on Monday, October 12. If you need assistance with any City Services while the office is closed, please call 311 or visit 311.chicago.gov.
There will also be a change to garbage and recycling collection this upcoming week. All city-collected refuse and recycling will be serviced Tuesday through Friday. Residents should ensure all black and blue carts are accessible throughout the entire week, not just on their regular day of collection. |
| Have a wonderful weekend! |
| Sincerely,
Debra L. Silverstein Alderman, 50th Ward |
