Dear Neighbors,
Happy summer, 46th Ward! With longer days, warmer weather, and a calendar packed with community events, there’s no better way to kick off the season than by getting out into the neighborhood and celebrating together.
We spent last weekend doing just that, tabling at both the Voice of the People's Juneteenth Block Party and Pride Fest. From celebrating Black history, culture, resilience, and joy at Juneteenth to connecting with neighbors and visitors during one of the city's most vibrant Pride weekends, it was a beautiful reminder of what makes our community so special. We had the opportunity to share resources, meet new neighbors, reconnect with familiar faces, and celebrate the diversity, culture, and spirit that make the 46th Ward such an incredible place to call home.
A huge thank you to everyone who stopped by our table, and major kudos to the organizers, volunteers, performers, and community partners who made both events possible.

| Speaking of Black excellence, I had the privilege of attending the retirement celebration of Major K. Kendall Mathews over the weekend. Affectionately known as "Major KK," he marked an incredible 35 years of service with The Salvation Army where he dedicated his life to serving others through leadership, compassion, and a steadfast commitment to community.
Major KK served alongside his wife, Major Katrina Mathews, and together, they made history as the first married Black couple with children to enter officer training in the Central Territory of the Salvation Army, helping open doors for future generations of diverse leadership. His impact has been felt across countless communities and has earned recognition from local, state, and federal leaders throughout his distinguished career. It was an honor to present a proclamation recognizing his decades of service, transformative leadership, and enduring legacy of community care on behalf of the 46th Ward and the City of Chicago.
Congratulations, Major KK, on a well-deserved retirement. Thank you for your 35 years of service and for the example you have set for all of us. We wish you and your family joy and fulfillment in this next chapter.

I value every opportunity to connect with neighbors around the ward, from meeting neighbors at community events to meeting neighbors right at home. Earlier this week, I had the opportunity to host a Meet & Greet at Eight Eleven Uptown, a unique residential community in the ward, home to an Olympic-sized swimming pool! The evening gave me a chance to connect with neighbors directly to answer questions, hear concerns, and share details about upcoming events and initiatives happening throughout the neighborhood.
Of course, no Meet & Greet is complete without food, so we brought pizza and spent the evening in conversation with neighbors about everything from local projects and city services to what they love most about living in the 46th Ward. Thank you to the management team and everyone who joined us for such a welcoming and engaging evening. We always love the opportunity to bring our office a little closer to home.
|
|
|
Keeping that same community spirit, we facilitated our second quarterly Community Conversation of the year centered on one of the most important issues facing our community: housing insecurity. We were grateful to welcome so many neighbors to Truman College for an evening of thoughtful discussion, resource sharing, and community engagement.
These conversations provide an opportunity not only to connect neighbors with available services and support, but also to create space for honest dialogue, hear concerns directly from the community, and explore how we can work together to support our neighbors. Throughout the evening, one message remained clear: community care is collective work, and addressing homelessness requires collaboration, compassion, and partnership.
Thank you to every city and state agency, nonprofit organization, outreach team, and community partner who joined us and helped make this conversation possible. Your expertise, commitment, and presence helped create a meaningful and impactful event, and we look forward to continuing this important work together. |

I also want to give a special shoutout to our incredible summer interns and fellows, who officially joined my office this week! We were excited to welcome this talented group with an intern and fellow lunch at one of my favorite neighborhood gems, Clarendon Park, and begin introducing them to the people, places, and projects that make up the 46th Ward.
As part of their first week, our interns and fellows also had the opportunity to participate in a tour of the CTA's Red and Purple Modernization (RPM) Project. They rode the Red Line from Belmont to Thorndale and back to the Argyle station before visiting the RPM project office, where they learned more about the multi-phased reconstruction project and the future of transit infrastructure on Chicago's North Side. Experiences like these help bring local government, infrastructure, and community engagement to life, and I look forward to seeing all that they accomplish this summer.

A special thank you to the Mikva Challenge, The University of Chicago and the City of Chicago, for partnering with us and helping place these young people in the 46th Ward. We are grateful for the opportunity to support the next generation of leaders and public servants.

Calling all neighbors with dated personal documents you’ve been hoping to get rid of for years!! If that describes you or a friend, I invite you to join my office for our Community Shred Day tomorrow, Saturday, June 27, from 10:00 AM to 2:00 PM at Uplift High School. This is a great opportunity to safely dispose of old documents, tax records, and other sensitive paperwork while protecting your personal information.
There is no limit to the amount of paper you can bring, but to help the process run smoothly, please remove all staples, binder clips, paper clips, folders, binders, and other non-paper materials before arriving. Whether you're tackling a long-overdue cleanout or simply clearing out a few files, I hope you'll stop by and take advantage of this free community service.

|
|

And while you're making plans for the weekend, don't forget that one of Chicago's biggest celebrations is also taking place on Sunday, June 28 - the Chicago Pride Parade!
This year's parade theme, "Free to Be Proud," celebrates visibility, dignity, resilience, and the freedom for every person to live openly and authentically. Whether you're marching, attending, volunteering, or cheering from the sidelines, I hope you'll join us in celebrating Chicago's vibrant LGBTQ+ community and the values of inclusion, acceptance, and pride that make our city stronger.

The Chicago Pride Parade kicks off at 11:00 AM from Grace and Broadway and will travel south on Broadway, south on Halsted, east on Belmont, south on Broadway, and east on Diversey to Cannon Drive.

With hundreds of thousands of attendees expected, please be sure to plan ahead and expect significant street closures, parking restrictions, transit reroutes, and large crowds throughout the weekend, particularly along Broadway and in the areas surrounding the parade route.

Travel times may be longer than usual, and driving is strongly discouraged if possible. Public transit remains the easiest way to access the event. If you plan to attend, we encourage you to review the parade route map, Chicago Transit Authority (CTA)’s travel information, and event FAQs in advance:

CTA will provide additional service, and riders are encouraged to review route maps, station information, and any service alerts before heading out. |

| Alley Reconstruction - Started 6/22!
Malden / Magnolia neighbors, good news!
This week, CDOT (Chicago Department of Transportation) crews began the long-awaited project to rebuild the alley bound by Malden, Magnolia, Leland, and Lawrence. Contractors began saw-cutting on Monday and started removing the top layer of asphalt on Tuesday; more extensive excavation began today.
Construction of this alley is scheduled to last up to 45 days from start to finish (six to seven weeks).
Over the course of construction, crews will remove the current asphalt surface and replace it with more durable concrete, replace existing catch basins and drainage structures as needed, and replace utility structures as needed to ensure proper drainage and sloping. If there are no delays, CDOT estimates that the work should be complete by the week of August 10. During construction, the alleys will be inaccessible for neighbors, and barricades will block all entrances. This means there are impacts to trash pickup and parking.
Trash Pickup: Trash pickup will take place from the street, in front of residences, rather than off the alley. At this point, all trash cans and dumpsters should have been relocated to the street. If your dumpster has not been moved yet, please reach out to our office ASAP and we will coordinate dumpster relocation with the contractors.
We know that trash collection on the street is inconvenient and takes away much-needed street parking, but unfortunately it is the only option.
Parking: Neighbors will be unable to access garages and rear parking spaces during construction, and will need to find alternative off-street parking or rely on street parking. We know that the loss of alley access is extremely disruptive; however, this alley reconstruction is a once-in-a-lifetime project and this alley will not host similar work again for many decades.
Some parking options are listed below: Free parking is available at the Truman College garage a few blocks away. Neighbors can park their cars overnight, but the garage is not accessible 24/7: summer garage hours are 7AM - 11PM Monday - Thursday, 7AM - 10PM Fridays, and 7AM - 5PM Saturdays. Parking is available on Sundays 7AM - 5PM only when Truman is open. If you plan on parking at Truman over the next few weeks, please email [email protected] and [email protected] and provide them with your car's make, model, and license plate.
Daily parking is available under the Wilson Red Line station between Sunnyside and Wilson for $5/day, available via parking.com
Cedar Street has limited paid monthly parking available at The Winnie (4750 N. Winthrop) and the Draper (5050 N. Broadway). Please reach out to [email protected] for details and pricing.
Neighbors can purchase zoned parking passes (zone 1130) at the 46th Ward Office.
Other daily and monthly parking nearby may be available for purchase via Spot Hero or other online providers.
Additional Questions?
Please reach out to our office by phone (773-878-4646) or email ([email protected]) if you have any questions or concerns!

Earlier this month, campers at Shirley Ryan AbilityLab's Adaptive Sports for Kids Camp near Montrose Beach had the opportunity to meet U.S. Paralympian and four-time gold medalist Brody Roybal. Hosted by Comcast, the event featured a conversation and meet-and-greet where Roybal shared his journey as a sled hockey player growing up in the Chicagoland area and offered encouragement and advice to young athletes.
A native of Northlake, Illinois, Roybal recently helped Team USA secure its fifth consecutive Paralympic gold medal in sled hockey at the 2026 Paralympic Winter Games, inspiring the next generation of athletes through his story of perseverance and achievement.

This week's Business Spotlight takes us to Marina's Bistro & Rum Bar, where Puerto Rican tradition, hospitality, and family come together in the heart of Uptown.
Named after owner and chef Eric's mother, Marina, the restaurant was inspired by her love, resilience, and home cooking. After attending culinary school in Puerto Rico and returning to Chicago, Eric set out to create a welcoming space where neighbors could experience authentic Puerto Rican cuisine and culture. Since opening in August 2023, Marina's Bistro has quickly become a neighborhood favorite, known for making every guest feel like family.
The menu features beloved Puerto Rican classics, including mofongo, slow-roasted pernil, arroz con gandules, and house-made desserts, alongside one of Chicago's most extensive selections of Puerto Rican rum and rum-forward cocktails. Whether you're visiting for dinner or drinks, Marina's Bistro offers an experience rooted in tradition with a modern touch.
Over the past two years, the restaurant has earned recognition throughout Chicago while building lasting relationships with guests and becoming an important part of Uptown's vibrant dining scene. This summer also marks an exciting new chapter, as Marina's Bistro prepares to transition into Marina's Supper Club, an elevated Puerto Rican dining experience. Before the transition, neighbors can enjoy the restaurant's special Farewell Tasting Series, a limited run of intimate dinners celebrating the dishes and memories that have defined Marina's Bistro.
The 46th Ward is proud to celebrate the incredible local businesses that make our community so unique. Thank you to Eric and the entire Marina's Bistro team for sharing your story, your culture, and your hospitality with Uptown—we can't wait to see what's next!

Say Goodbye to Potholes on Sheridan!
In May, Chicago Department of Transportation (CDOT) contractors began resurfacing Sheridan Road between Montrose and Foster to fix the wear and tear on the street. The resurfacing project includes pedestrian safety improvements, including curb extensions and paint-and-post bump-outs opposite of “T” intersections for traffic safety.
Over the past week crews completed the majority of concrete work to rebuild curbs, gutters, ADA ramps, and sidewalks; the primary concrete work remaining is construction of the Lakeside / Sheridan Plaza in front of CircEsteem, which will include wider sidewalks, a new small plaza, and relocation of existing catch basins.
Over the next few weeks, crews will continue to repair and adjust utility structures (manholes, drains, etc.) and the pavement foundation as needed to ensure the street is well-prepared for its final layer of asphalt in several weeks. This phase of work is expected to last several weeks - likely through mid-July, after which the final pavement layer will be laid down.
Resurfacing Construction RemindersDuring construction, signs will often be posted to limit parking during workdays to enable construction access. Please move your vehicle to avoid tickets. Parking will generally remain available overnight and on weekends. Be sure to check signage.
If you have questions or concerns, please reach out to the 46th Ward office at 773-878-4646 or via email at [email protected].
If you want to learn more about the project, check out the presentation from our online briefing on our website! |

As Chicago continues to experience significant growth in logistics and warehouse facilities, it is essential to understand how neighbors, businesses, and community stakeholders perceive these developments and are affected by them. University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC) has developed a survey aimed at gauging community acceptability and exploring the broader implications of warehouse growth across the city and surrounding region.
The survey can be taken here and is available in both English and Spanish.

| | Water Main 4600 - 4800 N. Racine!
In May, the Department of Water Management (DWM) began work on a project to replace the water main on Racine between Wilson and Broadway. This project entails replacement of the existing - more than 120 year-old! - water main and replacement of all existing lead service lines along this stretch of Racine.
As of today (Friday, June 26), crews have installed the new water main, connected it to the existing water system, and disinfected the new sections of pipe. They are currently completing testing and sampling to ensure the distinction was successful. Contractors have also replaced several sewer main sections that needed repair.
If the final water sampling results are clear, crews will begin replacing service lines next week to connect the new water main to homes and businesses along Racine. DWM anticipates this stage of work will take up to 2-3 months, as it includes replacing every service line to at least the B-Box, and completely replacing all lead service lines all the way into residences and businesses. Service line replacements will entail breif individuial water shutoffs as homes are transferred from one service line to another, and crews will alert neighbors about any upcoming shutoffs in advance of any work being done.
During this next phase of work, parking restrictions will be limited to the locations where crews need to station equipment and access service lines.
As always, neighbors can expect to be able to park along Racine through the weekend.
Please let us know if you have any questions or concerns!
