Summary

Alderman Samantha Nugent (39th Ward) reports that City Council is considering—though with limited information—a proposed transfer of Chicago’s parking meter lease to a New York-based investment firm, and she urges careful review and transparency due to long-term taxpayer and financial impacts, including concerns tied to Omni Air International. She also notes her office’s storm recovery work following last week’s severe storms and thanks Streets & Sanitation and Forestry crews for cleanup efforts. Other major updates include CTA adding weekend service hours on seven bus routes (including the #92 Foster) and CDOT planning later-summer repairs to the Carmen Avenue pedestrian walkway bridge, plus multiple community events such as an IATSE Local 2 community association networking event, an Eve Fries scoreboard dedication, and an Art Institute Legislator’s Breakfast.

June 18, 2026

Dear Neighbor,

As we head into Juneteenth weekend, I want to wish everyone a safe and enjoyable holiday as we recognize this important milestone in our nation's history.

Summer is one of the busiest times at City Hall. As the City Council works through major policy decisions, budget matters, and neighborhood priorities, I remain focused on making sure the voices of 39th Ward residents are heard and represented.

One of the issues before City Council this month is a proposal to approve the transfer of Chicago's parking meter lease from its current ownership group to a New York-based investment firm. Given the long-term impact the original parking meter agreement has had on taxpayers and city finances, I believe any transfer of that contract deserves careful review, full transparency, and meaningful public discussion.

I continue to have significant questions about this proposed transfer, particularly regarding the timeline and transparency surrounding the process. City Council was presented with limited information on a compressed timeframe, making it difficult to fully evaluate a transaction with long-term implications for taxpayers and city finances.

I also have serious reservations about reports connecting Omni Air International, an aviation company associated with federal immigration detention and deportation operations, to entities involved in the broader transaction. Given Chicago's values and the concerns many families have about immigration enforcement, I believe these issues warrant careful scrutiny and clear answers before City Council is asked to make a final decision.

Chicago is still living with the consequences of the original parking meter deal, and I do not believe City Council should be rushed into approving another transaction without having these questions fully answered.

Beyond debating issues at City Hall, our office is helping residents in the aftermath of last week's severe storms. Recovery efforts are ongoing across Chicago, and I want to recognize the city workers who have been putting in long hours to help communities get back on their feet.

I also want to take a moment to thank the crews from the Department of Streets and Sanitation and the Bureau of Forestry who have worked tirelessly following last week's severe storms. While the 39th Ward was fortunate to avoid some of the widespread damage seen in other parts of the city, many neighborhoods experienced extensive tree loss and debris that will take time to address.

I know some residents are waiting for storm-related cleanup in our ward. Please know that city crews are prioritizing the hardest-hit areas first. I appreciate the patience of our residents and the hard work of the men and women who continue responding across Chicago to help communities recover.

As always, my team and I are here to help. Whether you need assistance navigating a City service, have a concern about our neighborhood, or simply want to share feedback, please don't hesitate to reach out.

We are located at 4200 W. Lawrence Ave. and are open Mondays from 9:00 am to 7:00 pm, Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm, and Fridays from 9:00 am to 3:00 pm. Please contact us at 773.736.5594 or [email protected] if you need any city services or have any questions.

Best,

Alderman Samantha Nugent

Community Association Networking Event

Thank you to all of our Community Association leaders from across the 39th Ward who joined me for an evening of conversation and collaboration. We are incredibly fortunate to have such engaged neighbors who dedicate their time and energy to making our communities stronger. Thank you!

Each neighborhood in the 39th Ward has its own unique character, history, and priorities. Still, gatherings like this remind us that we share a common goal: building connected, welcoming, and thriving communities. It was a great opportunity to exchange ideas, share successes, discuss challenges, and explore ways we can work together on future events and initiatives across the Ward.

Thank you to IATSE Local 2 for hosting us and welcoming our community leaders into your new space. And thank you to our partners from the Chicago Police Department for joining us, meeting with neighbors, and continuing to build strong relationships throughout the Ward.

Eve Fries Scoreboard Dedication

Last week, the Little Gompers Softball and Baseball community came together for the dedication of a new scoreboard and dugout sunshades in honor of Eve Fries's legacy. Beli"EVE" on the scoreboard is written in Eve's handwriting.

Eve loved softball and played countless games at the Little Gomps ballfield.  Eve passed away at age 17 in 2021 after battling DIPG, a rare and aggressive brain tumor. Her family continues her legacy by creating opportunities for young athletes and has started the Fries Foundation.

Thank you to the Fries Foundation, the Fries family, and everyone who helped make this tribute possible.

Art Institute Legislator's Breakfast

I attended the Art Institute of Chicago’s annual Legislator’s Breakfast to celebrate the important role the arts play in our city. It was great to see friends and community leaders, including Cook County Commissioner Bridget Degnen and Gloria Groom from the Art Institute.

The Art Institute continues to make art more accessible through free admission opportunities for youth, Illinois residents, and community members. I also had the chance to view the summer exhibition, Willem de Kooning Drawing, and look forward to seeing the Art Institute’s Project Windows bring art into storefronts and commercial corridors across the Ward this summer. Locations across the Ward include: Edgebrook Library (5331 W. Devon Ave.), Northeastern Illinois University (3416 W. Bryn Mawr Ave.), People’s Gas (4025 W. Peterson Ave.), Pulaski Elston Business Association (4143 W. Lawrence Ave.), Special Service Area (SSA) 62 (4754 W. Peterson Ave.), and Superdawg Drive-In (6363 N. Milwaukee Ave.) Project Windows will be on display through September. Stay tuned for public voting coming soon!

Admission to the Art Institute is included in the Museum Pass that my office offers. If you'd like to reserve the pass to visit the Art Institute or any of the museums included on the pass for free, click below to send an email and get more information.

Mayfair Library Touch-a-Truck

Mayfair Library's Annual Touch-a-Truck event was so much fun. After storytime in the newly remodeled library, we headed outside to explore and learn about fire engines, garbage trucks, water service vehicles, and police cars!

The project is expected to start in late summer and last 1-2 months. For the duration of the work, they will close the bridge and mark a detour using N Central Park Ave, W Argyle St, and N Monticello Ave.
