Dear Chicago,
Team15 has been working hard this past week to maintain our quality of life expectations across every community the 15th Ward touches: West Englewood, Canaryville, Brighton Park, Chicago Lawn, Back of the Yards, and Gage Park.
The challenges across the communities are as diverse as the communities themselves.
In West Englewood and Back of the Yards, we have seen a spike in used tires being illegally dumped in lots, alleys and abandoned garages. Based on recent actions taken by the Department of Business Affairs & Consumer Protection, we believe a shuttered tire shop may have been trying to offload their garbage inventory at the expense of Chicago taxpayers.
In Chicago Lawn and Gage Park, we have been working with the Department of Water Management to clean sewers and catch basins before the next extreme weather event. The main streets across the ward have been cleaned. Now, we are focusing on the residential blocks, hoping to keep as much water moving out of the neighborhood instead of into our basements.
In Back of the Yards, I have been working with 009 Police District and the Department of Transportation trying to clean up their “Pedestrian Plaza” – the last remnant of the Lightfoot Administration. What started as a nice idea for families to rest in a walkable community has morphed in a heroin den the city departments would rather ignore. I am not ignoring the mess they have created.
In Brighton Park, my office has been working to address the growing migrant illegal mechanic operations proliferating throughout the area. These businesses are illegal and often dispose of oils and fluids illegally into our water systems.
While there remains plenty to do, our efforts are made possible by the hundreds of residents that contact our office to report issues on their block. That is a important because together we have more eyes on the streets. If you call my office with an issue, your information remains confidential.
Keep’em coming!
