Locking Arms around Our Teens

As we head into summer, the Fifth Ward is facing a challenge as massive gatherings of teens flood our streets, snarling traffic and often damaging our neighbors' cars. Last week, three participants were shot by someone wielding a gun.

These gatherings are catching everyone's attention — from police to predators. While every adult can relate to teens' need to have fun, it's our job to lock our arms around them so they can do it safely, without disturbing the peace in our community or attracting the attention of someone who might harm them.

The answers are here, which is why I began searching for a solution by chatting with Hyde Park resident Bennie Currie, who founded CollaBOOration, the volunteer group that has transformed scary Halloween nights in Hyde Park into a safe and entertaining event for everyone in the neighborhood.

I interact with Fifth Ward residents almost daily, and critical conversations like this one really should be heard by everyone. Consequently, this chat with Bennie marks the first of a video series I am calling, "VOICES from the FIFTH WARD."

I Said What I Said...

Chicago Trib Op-Ed

Bennie Currie has proven that there are better, more innovative ways to restore peace on Chicago's streets while engaging our young people in fun, safe activities. Frankly, as I outlined yesterday in a full-page editorial published in the Chicago Tribune, I am very disappointed in the city's response. We can and must think differently to keep our streets safe for residents of all ages.

I stand by my assessment and my commitment to helping the community find effective solutions. I invite you to plug in as we come together to lock arms around our teens and improve the safety of our streets.

Yours in service,

Desmon Yancy

Alderman, Fifth Ward

Now, It's Your Turn.

Attend a Convenient Safety Meeting

Due to the urgency of this situation, two community safety meetings have been scheduled next week, in addition to the regularly scheduled Community Policing meetings. The first is a panel discussion with the Chicago Police Department, the Mayor's Youth Commission, the University of Chicago, the Chicago Public Schools, and my colleague, Ald. Lamont Robinson, for what Bennie Currie is calling a "Convergence" to deliver us to a safer place.
