Dear 33rd Ward Community, |
|
|
Today, I began the day with my colleagues, State Senator Graciela Guzmán, State Representative Lilian Jimenez, Cook County Commissioner Jessica Vásquez, and many community organizers, to hear oral arguments regarding a petition we are supporting for an independent special prosecutor to charge ICE agents. Cook County Chief Judge Erica Reddick is scheduled to rule at a hearing on May 11.

On that note, in the last couple of weeks we have seen an increase of ICE sightings across the northwest side. We encourage our neighbors to continue supporting each other, being aware of your surroundings, and keep the support line handy to report ICE activity: 855-435-7693.
Next, I would like to celebrate the tremendous progress on the building of Jigzibik, a new affordable housing development in Irving Park, developed in partnership with Visionary Ventures and Full Circle Communities. The project will deliver 45 units of 100% affordable housing, designed for individuals and families of all backgrounds, with features that reflect Indigenous culture and strengthen connections to Native American communities in Chicago.

We had the pleasure of getting a tour of the construction site with Patrick and Solomon, from Skender Construction. The building will include studio, one, two, and three bedroom apartments along with amenities such as community spaces, a rooftop garden, fitness and business centers, on-site laundry, and parking. The development offers residents convenient access to important cultural and health resources through its location near key institutions like the American Indian Center, Saint Kateri Center, the First Nations Garden, the Horner Park’s Coiled Serpent Mound, and the American Indian Health Service of Chicago.

I am proud that this project moved forward through our Community Driven Zoning and Development Process (CDZD), a participatory approach that ensures land use decisions are shaped by the voices of all residents. I continue to be committed to empowering our community to actively guide development in ways that reflect their needs, values, and long-term vision. I hope everyone that participated in this process feels very proud of their work to welcome new neighbors to our community. I look forward to your help on future projects in the ward.
