36th Ward Newsletter for June 2026

Relevance: 1/10

Summary

In the June 2026 36th Ward newsletter, Alderman Gilbert Villegas highlights City Council actions rather than specific zoning/hearing items: a passed ordinance to crack down on auto airbag theft and a School Safety Zone ordinance that passed the Public Safety Committee. The newsletter also shares community-focused updates like office resources for permits/petitions/reserved parking signage and events such as Vet Connect (July 7 & 21), Firefighter for a Day (July 10 & 16), and a 16th District Police Council public meeting (July 14). Other major announcements include the opening of Commercial Park after improvements, summer internship placements for 36th Ward youth, and additional community safety/resource reminders (cooling centers and car seat safety help).

36th Ward Newsletter:

June 2026

Dear Neighbors,

I hope you are staying cool during these hot summer days. As a reminder, the City of Chicago has cooling centers citywide for residents, as well as all Chicago Public Libraries and Chicago Police Stations.

Additionally, if you are in the area and need a break from the heat, both our West Town and Belmont Cragin offices are air-conditioned, and staff can provide you with water. Stay cool and beat the heat!

As we are in the midst of the summer season, block club parties, garage sales, and moving are in full swing. 36th Ward staff can help you with petitions, permits, and reserved parking signs as needed. Send us an email, give us a call, or stop by in person.

Thank you, as always, for allowing me to serve as your Alderman.

Sincerely,

Alderman Gilbert Villegas 36th Ward

POLICY UPDATES FROM ALDERMAN VILLEGAS

🚙 PASSED: Ordinance to Crack Down on Auto Airbag Theft

I’m proud to share that the City Council passed my ordinance to crack down on the illegal sale, purchase, and trafficking of stolen airbags. This legislation closes loopholes, strengthens oversight, and creates stricter penalties for those who profit from the theft of vehicle safety equipment.

Airbags are designed to save lives, not be stolen and sold on the black market.

Thank you to my colleagues for supporting this important measure and to everyone who worked to get it across the finish line.

🚔 PASSED in Committee: School Safety Zone Ordinance

The substitute School Safety Zone Ordinance passed the Public Safety Committee. After being stalled previously by the mayor and his allies, its passage this month is an important step in the right direction for common-sense legislation.

Kids should not have to walk through open-air drug markets on their way to and from school. The same way CPD keeps tourist areas clear downtown should also apply to our neighborhoods. I thank my colleagues for their collaboration in getting this overdue legislation passed.

While many comments were made during public comment, I am extremely grateful that our community, who have lived in areas impacted for decades, made their voices heard about the realities they experience every day.

I remain committed to getting this done and will continue to pull every lever available to do so.

COMMUNITY HIGHLIGHTS
Glad to see a tremendous turnout at Archie’s earlier this month! Thank you to everyone who participated in our yard sale and donated to support local food shelters. I love seeing our community come together to help one another.
Our office was happy to partner with Lurie Children's Hospital. Teaming up to help educate the community on baby car seat safety and do a free check for constituents.
Was happy to celebrate...

Community. 🇵🇷🇵🇷🇵🇷
Culture. 🇵🇷🇵🇷🇵🇷
Puerto Rican Pride. 🇵🇷🇵🇷🇵🇷

Thank you to everyone who joined us at the parade!
🛝 Commercial Park is now open!

Neighbors, thank you for your patience as the park has undergone improvements. It was a joy to come together and cut the ribbon - welcoming everyone back to the park!

Thank you to the Commercial Park Advisory Council, neighbors who organized, and the Chicago Park District for helping make this a reality.

To many more years of Easter egg hunts, summer events, and community fun at Commercial Park!
36th Ward summer interns are here! ☀️

We’re extremely excited to have youth from the community join us this season to engage with constituents, learn about government, and get a first-hand look at public service.
RESOURCES
PROMOTING COMMUNITY SAFETY

- Our office works closely with the Chicago Police Department and the Cook County Sheriff's Office to respond to crimes and keep our residents safe.
- As a reminder, always CALL 911 whenever you see a crime or suspicious activity occurring. That is the only way for CPD to know when & where to target their responses.
- Attend a community meeting with your Police District! At the bottom of this email, you will find the CAPS Police Beat Meeting Schedules for the 11th, 12th, 16th, and 25th Police Districts. Find your Police District & Beat here: operations.chicagopolice.org/FindMyDistrict
