Summary

Alderman Bennett Lawson of the 44th Ward is inviting residents to a community meeting on January 14 to discuss a proposed West Lakeview Landmark District, a historic‑preservation effort that could affect property rights and future renovations. No decisions have been made yet, and the office is conducting a robust engagement process before moving forward. Residents are encouraged to review preliminary research and FAQs and to RSVP for the Zoom meeting.

Proposed Landmark District Covering Your Property - 44th Ward
Dear Neighbors,

Our office is exploring a potential West Lakeview Landmark District in the western area of the 44th Ward, with boundaries shown in red below.

You are receiving this email because our records indicate you may live within this district. This effort began at the request of residents on the 1300 block of Newport and has since expanded, in coordination with the City’s Department of Planning and Development (DPD), to study whether a broader area may be eligible for landmark designation.

Boundaries: Alley south of Addison (North) Alley north of Roscoe (South), Racine Avenue (East), and the alley east of Southport (West).

At this stage, no decisions have been made. Before any landmark designation could move forward, we are committed to a robust community engagement process to understand whether there is meaningful support from property owners within the proposed boundaries. To begin that process, we invite you to attend the first community meeting on Wednesday, January 14th at 6:00pm via Zoom. You can RSVP here.

Buildings that may be considered eligible to be a part of this district include 2- and 3-story brick flats and apartment buildings in the area above—often greystone or brick buildings built in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Buildings not meeting this criteria in this area may not be eligible. To see DPD's preliminary research with examples of these buildings in the neighborhood, click
here (page 7).

We know that proposing landmark status may raise important questions about property rights and future renovations ahead of the January 14th community meeting. For more information, you can read an FAQs for landmark homeowners
here, as well as our website's page on this project here.

We encourage you to review these materials and share your perspective during our community meeting and beyond. Your feedback will help guide whether—and how—this proposal moves forward.

Please don’t hesitate to reach out to our office with questions, and we hope to see you on January 14th. Please note we are closed Wednesday-Friday this week and next, for the holidays.
Thank you,
Alderman Bennett Lawson
