It is with great sorrow that the 45th Ward shares the news of John McNulty's passing, a dedicated resident and friend to many in our Portage Park community.
John, who was married to the late Sheila McNulty for 51 years before her passing in 2019, is survived by three children and nine grandchildren who were the beneficiaries of their boundless love and affection.
John McNulty was a highly respected member of our community, known for his strong faith and regular attendance at services at his beloved Parish at
St. Bartholomew, where his funeral services will be held.
John proudly served our country in the United States Army and had a distinguished career as an electrician with Local 134 for over 59 years.
John will be dearly missed by his family, friends, neighbors, and those of us fortunate enough to have known and loved him.

As the Shannon Rovers Irish Pipe Band celebrates its 100th anniversary, the Chicago Sun-Times recently interviewed Jefferson Park residents Danny and Noreen Boyle, longtime members of the band. Noreen has been playing the bagpipes for over 60 years, starting at just 12 years old, while Danny has been involved for nearly six decades. Danny, whose family is from Donegal, said he was “born into” the tradition, and Noreen shared that the band is not only where she found her love of music, but also where she met her husband.
The band itself has a long and meaningful history in the city, dating back to 1926, and has performed for presidents, major civic events, and generations of Chicagoans. From festive St. Patrick’s Day celebrations to more solemn moments, their music continues to be a powerful part of Chicago’s Irish heritage. Together, Danny and Noreen have spent decades carrying on this tradition, helping keep it alive for future generations.
Thank you both for representing the 45th Ward and for your many years of dedication.

Opened in 2017 by Cheryl Knecht, Schoolhouse Kitchen was inspired by her love of cooking with her own children. During the pandemic, Cheryl met Sarah Edgar, and the two quickly built a strong bond spending time baking pizza dough and cinnamon rolls to share with neighbors and bring joy to the community. At Schoolhouse Kitchen, cooking is more than just making meals it’s an opportunity to explore culture, math, science, and creativity in a fun and welcoming environment. Their mission is to provide engaging, hands-on cooking classes for youth and families that inspire a lifelong love of food.
