| | Dear Neighbor,
This past Monday morning, our office hosted our ceremonial ribbon-cutting for the Milwaukee Avenue Streetscape Project! This event was attended by Mayor Brandon Johnson, the Chicago Department of Transportation, Palenque LSNA, the Logan Square Chamber of Commerce, Logan Square Preservation, Congresswoman Delia Ramirez, Chicago Park District CEO and General Superintendent Carlos Ramirez-Rosa, and over a hundred community members. The event also included a musical performance by the Puerto Rican Arts Alliance’s Latin Music and a Mexican folkloric dance performance by Ballet Folklorico de Chicago. You can watch a recording of the full event here. If you received a ticket at the event to collect a commemorative pin, or are interested in receiving one, you may pick one up at our office. Supplies are limited. |

| After nine years of community engagement and planning, and two years of construction, Avondale and Logan Square are greatly benefiting from infrastructure improvements throughout the community. These include new sidewalks, light poles, catch basins, resurfaced roads, over an acre of new pedestrian and green space in Logan Square proper and La Placita, and pedestrian and cyclist safety improvements such as raised crosswalks, bump-outs, pedestrian refuge islands, and bike lanes. |

| I want to thank the hundreds of residents who participated in planning meetings over the years, the engineers who worked to craft a beautiful, culturally relevant design, the workers who put their blood, sweat, and tears into the construction, and our neighbors who demonstrated patience throughout the construction. I am thrilled that these improvements will contribute to the safety, accessibility, and enjoyment of our neighborhoods today and for generations to come.
On Wednesday, the Department of Planning and Development and Mayor Johnson announced $4,697,990 in Community Development Grant funding for projects in the 35th Ward! These grants are funded through the 2024 Housing and Economic Development Bond and are intended to support business-related investments to help maintain a vibrant commercial and civic fabric and social safety infrastructure throughout Chicago. I was proud to write letters of support for the four projects in the 35th Ward that were selected for funding: Grace’s Furniture Building Redevelopment Project (Logan Square): This project will redevelop the 20-year vacant Grace’s Furniture building located at 2618 N Milwaukee Avenue into the Logan Square Athletic Club, which will be owned by the locally owned and operated company, Chicago Athletic Clubs. The project team worked extensively with local community stakeholders to establish community benefits, including preservation and refurbishment of the vintage sign, living-wage jobs, local hiring, discounted gym membership rates for residents of the Lucy Gonzalez Parsons apartments, and assistance with maintenance of the adjacent Paseo Prairie Community Garden. Award Amount: $3,000,000. Puerto Rican Arts Alliance Cultural Campus Expansion Project (Avondale): This project will expand PRAA’s exhibit space and cultural programming. Award Amount: $1,323,909. Terra Coffee (Avondale): This grant will help cover the costs of interior rehabilitation of a vacant storefront into a cafe at 3341 W. Belmont. Award Amount: $124,081. The Afterlife Bar and Restaurant (Logan Square): This grant will help fund the buildout of a bar and restaurant in a former funeral home located at 3601 W Diversey Ave. Award Amount: $250,000.
I am thrilled about these major investments in our ward. These projects will bring positive economic activity and jobs to our neighborhoods.
Last night, I joined the Puerto Rican Cultural Center, the Kosciuszko Park Advisory Council, and the Alliance of Local Service Organizations at Kosciuszko Park in Logan Square for our community event, Night in the Light. This pop-up was a positive community activation for our neighbors at the park. We enjoyed food, music, games, and a beautiful summer evening. |

Food Resources
On May 1, nearly 120,000 neighbors in Illinois lost their SNAP benefits due to new work requirements and other eligibility changes. This is the largest drop in SNAP participation in our state’s history, and we know local hunger is rising.
No one should have to worry about putting food on the table while navigating these changes. If you or someone you know relies on SNAP, take action to protect your benefits or reconnect to SNAP today. You might qualify to apply for an exemption from the new work requirements. There are also free resources like Job Ready Illinois and Serve Illinois to help you connect to job training, work, and volunteering, if you are not exempt.
Visit SaveOurSNAP.org for resources or contact the Illinois Department of Human Services at 1-800-843-6154 to talk to someone about your benefits. 35th Ward Food Access Sites
