This past weekend, we had the honor of officially renaming the 1000 block of West Sunnyside Avenue as Lois Juanita Ellington Way. Neighbors, friends, and family members, even some who traveled all the way from Mississippi, joined us to celebrate the remarkable life and legacy of Lois Ellington.
Lois was a lifelong pillar of her community, a devoted advocate, and someone who made everyone feel like family. Many described her as a mother figure to countless neighbors, a passionate community activist, and a woman with a heart of gold. It was an incredibly meaningful and emotional ceremony, and we were honored to help ensure her legacy will continue to inspire future generations. |
|
| |
We also had the opportunity to join our partners at Voice of the People and ONE Northside for their annual Back to School Bash. It was wonderful connecting with neighbors, sharing resources, and seeing so many families getting ready for a successful school year. Events like these are a reminder of what makes our community so special, organizations and neighbors coming together to support one another. |

Our Monthly Houseless Neighbor Picnic was a wonderful success this month as we returned to our longtime location at Wilson Avenue and Marine Drive, the first time we've hosted the picnic there this summer. It was great to be back in this familiar space, bringing neighbors together for a meal, meaningful conversation, and access to essential resources.
These monthly gatherings are about so much more than sharing food. They are an opportunity to build relationships, connect our unhoused neighbors with critical services, and remind people that they are seen, valued, and supported by their community.
A special thank you goes to Old National Bank for joining us as part of their Day of Service and generously providing hygiene kits, snacks, and clothing for our neighbors. We also want to recognize our incredible returning partners, Uptown People's Law Center, Northside Action for Justice, Liberate the 46th Ward, and the 845 W. Wilson DFSS Office, whose continued dedication makes these picnics possible month after month.
Our next Houseless Neighbor Picnic will take place on Wednesday, August 26. Between now and then, my office will be collecting body wipes, portable phone chargers, and gently used blankets to distribute to neighbors in need. If you're able to contribute, we would greatly appreciate any donations dropped off at the 46th Ward Office.
Thank you to everyone who continues to support this important work. Together, we're building a stronger, more compassionate community for all. |

| As you make your plans for August, don't forget to check your block's scheduled street cleaning dates and move your vehicle before the posted time to avoid a ticket. Street sweeping helps keep our neighborhood clean, improves drainage, and keeps debris out of our sewer system, so your cooperation makes a big difference. Please take a moment to review the updated schedule and mark your calendar so you don't get caught by surprise. Thank you for helping keep the 46th Ward clean and beautiful all summer long! |

Have You Visited the Poetry Fence? One of the 46th Ward's most charming hidden gems can be found along the 4400 Block of Malden, where a simple fence has blossomed into a space for creativity and connection. What began as a way for a small group of neighbors to stay connected through poetry during the COVID-19 pandemic has grown into a community art installation.
Originally filled with poems from the group's weekly poetry gatherings, the fence soon invited neighbors to join in by leaving blank tags and a pen for anyone passing by. Today, the majority of the poems hanging on the fence have been written by neighbors, creating a beautiful collection of shared thoughts, memories, and moments of inspiration.
The Poetry Fence is a reminder that art has a way of bringing people together, one poem at a time. If you're walking through the neighborhood, stop by, take a read, and maybe even leave a few words of your own.

Some businesses serve food. Others serve community. Uptown Nutrition Chi does both.
When Tayo and her mother opened Uptown Nutrition Chi at 4548 N. Broadway 13 years ago, they had a simple but powerful vision: make healthy eating accessible while creating a space where every person who walks through the door feels like family.

Today, that vision is thriving. From protein-packed smoothies and refreshing teas to delicious crepes, waffles, pancakes, and nourishing bowls, Uptown Nutrition Chi proves that healthy choices don't have to sacrifice flavor. Every item on the menu is crafted with wellness in mind—without compromising on taste. But what truly sets this neighborhood gem apart isn't just what's on the menu—it's the atmosphere. Bright, welcoming, and full of positive energy, Uptown Nutrition Chi has become a gathering place where neighbors can connect, recharge, and leave feeling a little healthier than when they arrived.

Their commitment to community extends well beyond their doors. Seniors receive 10% off every Tuesday, first responders enjoy a 5% discount, and the space is available to rent for private events. They're also excited to partner with local entrepreneurs by hosting small business pop-ups, creating even more opportunities to support our local community.
Businesses like Uptown Nutrition Chi remind us that investing in our neighbors can be just as important as investing in a great meal. Whether you're stopping in for a post-workout smoothie, meeting a friend over breakfast, or simply looking for a welcoming place to unwind, you'll find plenty to love at this Uptown favorite.
Business Hours:
Monday–Friday: 7:00 AM – 5:00 PM Saturday: Closed Sunday: Closed
We are proud to celebrate the small businesses that make the 46th Ward such a unique place to call home. |

Zoning Change Open for Feedback! - 1429 W. Irving Park
A potential buyer of 1429 W. Irving Park is seeking a zoning change from B3-2 to B2-3 in order to construct a five-story mixed use building on the site of an existing parking lot. The proposed building would include 36 residential units, 4,400 square feet of ground floor retail space, and 25 parking spaces. The proposed building would mostly consist of family-sized units: 8 three-bedroom units, 20 two-bedroom units, 4 one-bedroom units, and 4 studio apartments. Seven of the 36 residential units (i.e., 20%) would be designated as affordable units via the Affordable Requirements Ordinance. Fourteen of the 25 parking spaces would be interior garage spaces; the other 11 would be exterior spaces. All parking would be accessible via the alley and the proposal includes the elimination of an existing curb cut on Irving Park Road.
The 46th Ward Office coordinated a presentation from the developers at a Southport Neighbors Association (SNA) meeting at 7 PM on Monday, July 27 for in-person discussion and feedback. We are seeking additional feedback through our online feedback form, which opened for responses on Monday, July 27 and will be stay open through at least Monday, August 10.
You can see the street-facing elevation of the building below, and check out all the project details on the ward website here.

| | Alley Reconstruction - Malden / Magnolia / Leland / Lawrence!
Malden / Magnolia neighbors, good news! Your alley reconstruction project is still moving ahead of schedule!
Several weeks ago, CDOT (Chicago Department of Transportation) crews began the long-awaited project to rebuild the alley bound by Malden, Magnolia, Leland, and Lawrence.
Over the course of construction, crews removed the old asphalt surface and replaced it with more durable concrete, replaced and added catch basins and drainage structures as needed, and replaced other utility structures as needed to ensure proper drainage and sloping. Today, contractors are pouring the final concrete components, and the entire alley should be usable by this coming Monday. Neighbors should not drive over the recently poured portions (these have been barricaded), as the concrete needs 48-72 hours to properly set and cure.
The crews plan to complete final asphalt work for the alley next week and will then coordinate the return of dumpsters to the alley. |

Residential Resurfacing coming soon to a street near you!
Good news, neighbors! Get ready to say goodbye to more potholes as the Chicago Department of Transportation (CDOT) begins resurfacing residential streets in the 46th Ward next week. CDOT is resurfacing the following residential streets this paving season! Leland between Clark and Dover - Milled, Paving Scheduled for August 3 Buena between Clarendon and Marine Drive - Milled, Paving Scheduled for August 4 Hutchinson between Hazel and Marine Drive - Milled, Paving Scheduled for August 5 Sunnyside between the CTA Station and Broadway - Milled, Paving Scheduled for August 5 Clarendon between Wilson and Lawrence - Milled, Paving scheduled for August 6 Lakeside between Marine and Clarendon - Milled, Paving scheduled for August 6
We know that having several simultaneous resurfacing projects in the neighborhood is disruptive and creates parking challenges. Our office will actively follow up with to ensure the work happens as quickly as possible; we also know that signs were seemingly put up too early and have communicated neighbors' frustration to CDOT.
We are also following up with CDOT to ensure that Pine Grove between Grace and Irving Park is resurfaced this year as well.
Overnight parking on all streets listed above will continue to be available but parking will be restricted during work hours - make sure to pay attention to any orange signs put up on these streets to avoid getting ticketed or towed!

|
| | Say Goodbye to Potholes on Sheridan! In May, Chicago Department of Transportation (CDOT) contractors began resurfacing Sheridan Road between Montrose and Foster to fix the wear and tear on the street. The resurfacing project includes pedestrian safety improvements, including curb extensions and paint-and-post bump-outs opposite of “T” intersections for traffic safety.
Paving is now complete! Crews finished laying the asphalt yesterday and will complete the remaining striping over the next few weeks. Once the final striping is laid down, crews will install the final signage and complete any remaining punch list work.
If you want to learn more about the project, check out the presentation from our online briefing on our website!

| | 4600 - 4800 N. Racine - Water Main Update!
In May, the Department of Water Management (DWM) began work on a project to replace the water main on Racine between Wilson and Broadway. This project entails replacing the existing - more than 120 year-old! - water main and replacing of all existing lead service lines along this stretch of Racine.
As of today (Friday, July 31), crews have installed the new water main and connected all service lines along these two blocks to the new main.
Next week, crews plan to complete one final connection between the new water main and the citywide system, decommission the old main, and remove onsite construction materials and debris. Concrete and asphalt restoration will then follow, beginning at the start of September at the very latest. No additional water shutoffs are anticipated during any future phases of work.
We are aware that this phase of construction has been extremely disruptive and have shared feedback with the Department of Water Management about shutoffs without proper notice.
As always, neighbors can expect to park along Racine through the weekend. Please let us know if you have any questions or concerns!

New Streetlights Coming to 4600-4800 Beacon Street
Neighbors, you may have noticed even more orange no-parking signs in Sheridan Park!
These restrictions are in place to enable CDOT (Chicago Department of Transportation) contractors to install new and more reliable streetlights on this stretch of Beacon. The supervising engineers anticipate this project should be complete by the end of October, as long as the weather cooperates.
Crews will install new street lights with "piggy-back" lights (which provide better sidewalk illumination) over the next several weeks. Once the new streetlights are installed, electrified, and functioning, crews will remove the old ones. Afterward, they will complete concrete and asphalt restoration as necessary.
We know there is a lot of construction going on within Sheridan Park, but please know that other projects are wrapping up as new ones start. The parking impacts for this project will be most significant over the next two weeks as crews complete the directional boring (installing the underground conduits that power the new street lights) and dig foundations for the new light poles.
If you have any questions or concerns about this work, please reach out to the 46th Ward Office at 773-878-4646 or via email at [email protected]. |

New Streetlights Coming to Sheridan Road (Montrose to Buena)
Neighbors, you may have noticed even more orange no-parking signs on Sheridan between Buena and Montrose!
These restrictions are in place to enable CDOT (Chicago Department of Transportation) contractors to install new and more reliable streetlights on this stretch of Sheridan. Given the limited extent of the segment under construction, the supervising engineers anticipate the project should be completed before Labor Day, as long as the weather cooperates.
Crews will install new streetlights with "piggy-back" lights (which provide better sidewalk illumination) over the next several weeks. Once the new streetlights are installed, electrified, and functioning, crews will remove the old ones. Afterward, they will complete concrete and asphalt restoration as necessary.
We understand that streetwork across the ward can cause parking challenges, and we are doing our best to keep all projects on track and on time. If you have any questions or concerns about this work, please reach out to my office at 773-878-4646 or via email at [email protected]. |

CHICAGO'S SMALL BUSINESS COMMUNITY TO GATHER FOR LAST CHICAGO BUSINESS RESOURCE EXPO OF 2026 Free expo at Malcolm X College on August 29 connects Chicago entrepreneurs with essential resources, workshops and a keynote from a Chicago BBQ business success story. |
|
Today, Mayor Brandon Johnson and the Chicago Department of Business Affairs and Consumer Protection (BACP) announced the last Chicago Business Resource Expo of 2026 will take place on Saturday, August 29th from 8:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at Malcolm X College. The free expo will kick off with a networking session sponsored by the Office of the City Treasurer, an exhibition hall offering resources from over 30 nonprofit and government agencies, workshops and a keynote address. The keynote address will feature Chef D'Andre Carter and Heather Bublick, Co-Founders of Soul & Smoke, the Chicago-born BBQ and soul food brand with multi-location restaurants. To register and learn more, visit Chicago.gov/BizExpo.
“At its core, the Chicago Business Resource Expo is about investing in our residents' ideas and dreams," said Mayor Brandon Johnson. “We are proud to support the local business owners and entrepreneurs who drive revitalization and strengthen our communities by creating jobs and empowering our residents to build generational wealth."
"The Chicago Business Resource Expo is a vital resource for current and aspiring business owners looking to start or scale their business," said Ivan Capifali, BACP Commissioner. "The expo offers no-cost resources and support from exhibitors, workshops and more to help turn ideas into action."
The keynote address will feature Chef D'Andre Carter and Heather Bublick, Co-Founders of Soul & Smoke. The couple met while working together at a restaurant and later turned a catering venture into an award-winning BBQ empire, growing to multiple Chicago-area locations, two food trucks and a retail line without external funding, while providing hundreds of thousands of meals to Chicagoans in need through community partnerships.
"Soul & Smoke started as two people creating pop-up dinner experiences and catering out of their home and a dream, no outside investors, no shortcuts, just grit and a commitment to our community," said Chef D'Andre Carter, Co-Founder of Soul & Smoke. "I'm honored to share that journey with Chicago's small business owners and show them that you can build something real, right here in your own neighborhood."
"Every entrepreneur in that room is at the beginning of their own story, and we remember exactly what that felt like," said Heather Bublick, Co-Founder and CEO of Soul & Smoke. "We can't wait to talk about what it really takes to grow a business while staying true to the people and the community that got you there."
In partnership with City Colleges of Chicago and the Chicago Treasurer's Office, the expo is sponsored by Wintrust Bank, Old National Bank, CIBC Bank USA and Pursuit Lending. |
