Dear Neighbors,
I hope you have been enjoying this beautiful weather. I had the pleasure of joining our mighty Uplift Titans for their Junco basketball showcase, over the weekend. As an alum of Uplift, it’s always special to return and see the next generation of student-athletes shine. I was proud to sponsor this event and support a program that continues to pour into young people, both on and off the court. Moments like these are a reminder of the talent, dedication, and bright future coming out of our schools right here in the 46th Ward. |

We kicked off the week strong with Cubs Charities to celebrate McCutcheon STEAM Elementary School’s designation as a 2026 All-Star School, alongside a $25,000 investment to support its growing STEAM programming! We were joined at the event by 48th Ward Alderwoman Leni Manaa-Hoppenworth, Cubs players Pete Crow-Armstrong and Michael Busch, Clark the Cub, and members of the Cubs Charities team, underscoring the nonprofit’s commitment to investing in Chicago neighborhoods.
Shoutout to the cheerleader squad for showcasing their amazing talent and turning us up on a Monday! The All-Star recognition marks a major milestone for McCutcheon, a school that continues to demonstrate resilience, innovation, and a deep commitment to its students and families and the investment will go a long way in supporting our students. |

I had a chance to enjoy coffee and donuts with our neighbors at Wilson Care, a unique living space in our ward that serves neighbors living with chronic mental illness. Uptown has a long history as a neighborhood that welcomes and supports people from all walks of life, including those who rely on supportive housing and care facilities. Spaces like Wilson Care are a deeply important part of that legacy, ensuring that neighbors receive the stability, dignity, and care they deserve. It was meaningful to spend time listening and connecting with neighbors and staff, and to be reminded that building a strong community means meeting our neighbors where they are and making sure everyone feels seen, valued, and supported. |
|
| |
I also had the chance welcome spring in with neighbors at Eastwood Towers for a spring party! I had great time connecting with neighbors celebrating the warmer weather and blooming season together. We appreciate being able to share a meal, answer thoughtful questions and bond over bingo with our neighbors! If you would like to host a 46th Ward Meet & Greet at your building this year, reach out to my office at [email protected]. |

With our freedoms and protections under constant threat, our partners over at American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) of Illinois are working overtime now more than ever. I joined their luncheon, “Fighting for a More Perfect Union,” alongside Hope Clinic, Chicago Abortion Fund and ____. The event brought together leaders, advocates, and community members committed to protecting civil liberties and advancing justice for all.
It was a powerful space for reflection and conversation, with speakers highlighting the ongoing work needed to defend rights and ensure equity across our communities. We’re grateful to organizations like the ACLU and Hope Clinic, who continue to show up and advocate for access, dignity, and care for so many of our neighbors. |

Did you make it to our first ever Infrastructure Town Hall? We invited neighbors together to talk all things streets, sewers, sidewalks, and safety across the ward. It was a great opportunity to share updates on recent and upcoming projects and hear directly from residents about what matters most in their day-to-day experiences. Special shoutout to our Director of Infrastructure, Jesse, for his amazing hosting skills and for sharing his knowledge with us on all things infrastructure! If you missed it- you can still check out the presentation online here!
We also launched Participatory Budgeting 2026 at the town hall, encouraging neighbors to participate in shaping how infrastructure dollars are spent in our community. Thank you to everyone joined us for our town hall, we’re excited to keep this work moving forward together. If you have an infrastructure idea to submit, fill out the idea collection form! |

I’m always looking for ways to expand access to resources in our ward and had the chance to visit National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) Chicago this week. We were joined by MADO Healthcare leaders and learned more about the mental health services provided by NAMI and how we can continue strengthening support here in the 46th Ward. Accessible mental health resources remain a top priority for my office, it was incredibly valuable to learn more about the programs, care models, and community-based support NAMI offers to individuals and families across the city.
Thank you to the NAMI team for welcoming us and for the critical work you do every day to support our neighbors. |

Over the weekend, we joined Jill and neighbors at the Triangle Garden for their annual Earth Day clean-up. It was a great day of community, connection, and care for our shared spaces, and we’re so grateful to everyone who came out to help keep our neighborhood green and beautiful. |

We had the chance to activate space and join neighbors at Buena Circle Park for the first bonfire of the season. It was such a beautiful way to gather, connect, and enjoy the start of warmer days together. Moments like these remind us how important our shared outdoor spaces are and how special it is to simply come together as a community.
|
|
| We also partnered with ComEd to help restore a neighbor’s parkway, turning what was once a swampy patch into a fresh, green space. We’re grateful to play a role in helping beautify our shared spaces. Small efforts like this go a long way in keeping our ward green and cared for!

Good news neighbors!
Over the past few weeks, the Illinois Department of Human Services (IDHS) completed two crucial steps in the process to open up a new office in the 46th Ward at the Institute of Cultural Affairs (ICA), at the 4750 N. Sheridan.
On April 13, the Committee on Finance unanimously approved a $2M TIF grant from the Lawrence / Broadway TIF; this funding will support critical infrastructure upgrades to the building and the ground floor build-out for the IDHS. This was then unanimously approved at City Council on April 15. This week, we also heard confirmation that IDHS signed a lease with the ICA. Both partners (ICA and IDHS) hope to complete the last remaining administrative steps over the next few months, with construction and bulidout expected to last several months thereafter, with a goal of opening in the first half of next year.
IDHS will provide integrated services at this location for Developmental Disabilities, Early Childhood, Family, and Community Services, Rehabilitation Services, Behavioral Health and Recovery, Clinical, Administrative and Program Support - we can't wait for the ICA to house all of these crucial resources!

There are new Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) eligibility requirements for residents who are not citizens of the United States that went into effect on April 1. If you are a recipient of benefits from the Violence Against Women Act (VAWA) who has met their 5-year waiting period, an approved refugee or asylum seeker, or a trafficking survivor (T-Visa holder), your benefits will be revoked during your next redetermination period. For other residents who may not know about whether their benefits are in jeopardy, please consult the list below.
Non-citizens that are still eligible: Cuban or Haitian Entrants admitted to the United States on or after 04/21/1980 Individuals who reside lawfully in the United States under the Compacts of Free Association (COFA) Legal Permanent Residents (LPRs) over the age of 18 who have held that legal status for 5 years or more Legal Permanent Residents who have held that legal status for less than 5 years, if: They are under 18 years old, or They are blind or disabled, or They are a U.S. veteran or active-duty member or their dependent, or They have been credited with 40 qualifying quarters of work history, or They qualify for an exception under the Personal Responsibility and Work Opportunity Reconciliation Act (PRWORA).
Non-citizens that are no longer eligible: VAWA recipients who have met 5 year waiting period (from data on prima facie letter) Refugees and Asylees (application approved), Trafficking survivors (T-Visa holder)
People who have been receiving SNAP under previous noncitizen eligibility will no longer receive SNAP after their next redetermination, unless they meet one of the noncitizen criteria listed above. A notice of ineligibility will be sent when the redetermination is processed. Processing typically occurs prior to the start of the new eligibility period. In households with mixed immigration statuses, SNAP benefits will only be issued to family members who are U.S. citizens or hold one of the noncitizen statuses listed above. New applications for SNAP will be subject to the eligibility changes starting on April 1st. At this time, there will not be any changes to any cash or medical benefits that eligible noncitizens receive through the Illinois Department of Human Services or the Illinois Department of Healthcare and Family Services. As many as 16,000 individuals in Illinois could be impacted by this change, following verification of status at their redetermination. Refugees, asylees, and human trafficking survivors are among the lawfully present immigrants who may lose SNAP benefits.

| | | It has come to our attention that large amounts of food are being dumped in various areas of the ward to feed pigeons. We want to remind neighbors that feeding pigeons is a violation of the City of Chicago ordinance.
As a reminder, dumping food in public spaces attracts rodents, creates sanitation issues, and negatively impacts the surrounding area. We ask all neighbors to help keep our ward clean and safe by refraining from feeding pigeons and reporting large food dumping when you see it.
Thank you for doing your part to keep our community healthy and welcoming for everyone.

Alderwoman Clay has decided to support a proposed zoning change from RT-4 to RM-4.5 at 918-920 W. Eastwood to allow the addition of two garden units to an existing 6-flat. The proposal aligns with the 46th Ward’s development priorities of enabling growth without displacement, preserving existing buildings when possible, and adding density near high-quality transit corridors.

Trader Joes coming to Uptown!
Several weeks ago, the Department of Buildings (DOB) issued an alteration / renovation permit for the build out of a shell space for Trader Joes on the ground floor of 804 W. Montrose.
Last week, the property management has confirmed that Trader Joes has signed a lease at this location and construction is in progress - passers-by can take a peak through the windows to see! We do not have a confirmed timeline or opening date from Trader Joes and we will share additional information about their plans and timeline as soon as we receive it.
We are looking forward to our large vacant retail spaces on Montrose being occupied soon, between this project and the upcoming Planet Fitness at 909 W. Montrose (slated to open this summer!), we expect to see Montrose being an even bigger destination within the next few months! |

Camry Parking Lot Update: Demolition Starting Next Week
As part of our ongoing effort to keep neighbors informed about the proposed 250-space expansion of the Chicago Cubs’ “Camry Lot,” we want to share that the Cubs received a permit from the city for demolition work at the former House of the Good Shepherd, and they expect to begin demolition on Monday, April 27.
The Cubs have shared that - based on input from neighbors - they have made several adjustments to their original plan to improve the flow of traffic, create safer routes for parking shuttles, and enhance green initiatives like stormwater collection and new tree plantings. The Cubs do not need zoning approval for their new plans to demolish the existing buildings; demolition permits are overseen only by the Department of Buildings and there is no ward office involvement.
The Camry Lot and its associated Planned Development (PD) is located entirely within the 44th Ward, but I understand that many 46th Ward neighbors are deeply impacted by the proposal.
The PD amendment will need to be reviewed by the Chicago Plan Commission before approval and has not yet been granted support from me or Alderman Lawson. I encourage 46th Ward neighbors to continue providing feedback to my office for consideration. |

| Construction Updates: Montrose Bridges and Grace Street Greenway |
|
|
| We have two exciting construction updates to share with neighbors this week!
First - At long last, construction has begun on the Grace Street Greenway! The greenway will create a 2.75 mile family-friendly route between the 312 RiverRun Trail and the lakefront, connecting neighbors to destinations across the north side of Chicago while providing a low-stress alternative to Addison and Irving Park.
Second - Construction on the four replacement bridges at Montrose Beach is nearly complete. All bridges should be open permanently to vehicular traffic by the end of April - if not earlier - and the Department of Transportation expects underpasses to open up to pedestrians and cyclists by late May or early June at the latest. There may be one short additional closure later in the summer or fall to complete the final exterior masonry work. |
