Summary

In his 45th Ward newsletter, Alderman Jim Gardiner doesn’t report any specific zoning, development, housing, transit, or budget hearings or new housing/parking/transit/street policy/ordinances, but he does highlight a Portage Park Neighborhood Bikeways Network update with four new bikeways selected for construction in fall 2026. He also shares community updates including free American lawn flags for residents, the announced death of Chicago Fire Battalion Chief Sean Kevin, property tax exemption reminders and pre-filed 2026 property tax appeals, and scheduled 2026 beat meetings across the ward. Other major items include Hispanic Heritage Month events at the Field Museum (Sep. 15–Oct. 15) and local community/business updates (e.g., Gladstone Park Throwback Music Fest starting Sep. 11, plus featured small businesses and ward resources).

MESSAGE FROM ALDERMAN JIM GARDINER

This September 11th marks the 25th anniversary of the day our nation was mercilessly attacked. As we remember the innocent lives lost, we also honor the bravery of our first responders and military members, as well as the extraordinary patriotism demonstrated by Americans across the country.

I encourage residents to join me in honoring their memory and showing our love of country by proudly flying the American flag.  The 45th Ward Office is offering free American lawn flags for residents to display in remembrance.

The 45th Ward sadly announces Sean Kevin, a 30 year veteran of the

Chicago Fire Department who rose through the ranks to earn the rank of Battalion Chief, has made his final transition.

Sean was a family oriented man who loved and adored his three children while always prioritizing the needs of his family.

I had the honor to work with Sean as Firefighters in the 13th Battalion on the West Side of Chicago where he will always be remembered for his hard work, discipline, and humble nature that made him well regarded amongst fellow firemen.

Sean was an unassuming man who gracefully shared his knowledge and expertise to ensure the safety and well-being of the next generation of firefighters.

May God bless Sean and his loving family as they grieve the loss of a great man.

Attention Homeowners: Check Your Property Tax Bill for Missing Exemptions

Second installment property tax bills are now available and must be paid to the Cook County Treasurer’s Office by Thursday, October 1, 2026. Homeowners should check the lower-left corner of their bill to make sure all eligible exemptions are included, such as the Homeowner and Senior Exemptions. If an exemption is missing, you may apply for a Certificate of Error through the Cook County Assessor’s Office to correct the bill and receive the savings you qualify for.

In 2024, Engine 108 and Ambulance 47 which is located in Jefferson Park, responded to a childbirth that quickly became a life-threatening emergency.

At just 32 weeks, the baby was delivered during a difficult breech birth with no pulse. Without hesitation, crews immediately began neonatal resuscitation. While Ambulance 73 cared for the mother, Ambulance 47 focused on saving the baby.

Through teamwork, training and determination, the crew achieved an extraordinary outcome: the baby’s pulse returned.

Today, the family and first responders came together for an emotional reunion—a powerful reminder of the difference members of the Chicago Fire Department regularly make.

The 45th ward is incredibly proud of the women and men of the Chicago Fire Department and their commitment to never giving up on our residents.

Thank you James "The Mayor of Montrose" Sobun for ensuring the ice cream is just as cold on the southside as it is on the northside.

BTW: the White Sox are leading the Central Division while the Cubs look to secure a Wild Card spot in the National League.

Great time to be a Chicago fan!!!
