Thriving 21 Weekly Bulletin
August 12, 2026

The 21st Ward was moving this weekend! From the Bud Billiken Parade and Morgan Park Roots Festival to more than 20 block parties, church picnics, back-to-school events, and community gatherings, our team was out connecting with neighbors from 83rd Street to 123rd Street. It was a joy to see the energy and vibrancy across our ward.
But our work doesn’t stop when the events end. Every Monday, neighbors visit our office for Constituent Night to share concerns, ask questions, and get help navigating city services. Keep coming, calling, and letting us know how we can serve you. My team and I are here to help get things done.
Have a safe and enjoyable summer. I’ll see you out and about in the 21st Ward as we continue moving forward.

National Night Out in the 21st Ward
On August 4, our team joined neighbors, community leaders, and officers from the 5th, 6th, and 22nd Police Districts for National Night Out celebrations at Palmer Park, Cole Park, and Beverly Park.
These annual gatherings strengthen relationships between residents and law enforcement while promoting public safety, celebrating the start of the school year, and bringing families together for summer fun. Thank you to every district and community partner who helped make the evening possible.

Preparing Students for a Safe and Successful School Year
As students prepare to return to the classroom, the Youth Peace Center of Roseland brought families, youth leaders, elected officials, and violence-prevention organizations together for more than a traditional back-to-school event. The gathering created space for an important conversation about how parents, schools, students, and community partners can work together to prevent violence throughout the school year.
Thank you to Chicago CRED, UCAN, Insiple, Senator Emil Jones, Representative Justin Slaughter, and everyone who helped surround our young people with support. A safer community begins by listening to our youth, investing in their futures, and working Better Together.

Morgan Park Roots Festival 50th Anniversary and Honorary Street Sign Celebration
For 50 years, the Morgan Park Roots Festival has celebrated the history and legacy of the first Black families who made Morgan Park home.
I was honored to join Crystal Warren and the community to commemorate this milestone with an honorary street sign. I also want to honor Helen Warren, the festival’s last living founder, whose vision helped create this cherished tradition.
I have proudly supported this festival since taking office because preserving our history is essential to building our future. Fifty years later, the roots of Morgan Park remain strong.

Phalanx Family Services’ 13th Annual Back-to-School Giveaway
Families from across the Far South Side gathered at Visions Odeum and Events for an afternoon of games, prizes, and back-to-school support. Hundreds of bookbags were available to help students begin the new school year prepared and confident.
As a valued 21st Ward partner, Phalanx Family Services continues to show what meaningful community investment looks like. I was proud to support and co-sponsor the 13th year of this important celebration.

Brainerd 4 Life Way Honorary Street Sign Celebration
Thirty years of memories, mentorship, and community pride came together at Brainerd Park for the unveiling of the honorary Brainerd 4 Life Way street sign.
I was proud to join Ken Lewis, the Brainerd Park 4 Life Group, alumni, and neighbors in recognizing the generations shaped by the park—from the Bengals youth football team to its basketball and baseball programs. The celebration was more than a reunion; it honored the lasting relationships and community spirit that continue to make Brainerd Park feel like home.
| |
Lutheran Church of the Holy Spirit Annual Gospel Jazz Worship
Music, worship, and community came together at the Lutheran Church of the Holy Spirit for its Annual Gospel Jazz Worship and Picnic on August 9.
The summer celebration welcomed the congregation and surrounding community for an afternoon of faith, fellowship, and jazz. It was a joy to join neighbors at 1335 W. 115th Street and experience how music and worship continue to bring the 21st Ward together.
| |
Block Club Season Across the 21st Ward
From 110th Place to 86th and Union, I spent the day visiting 15 block parties across the 21st Ward. At every stop, neighbors came together to strengthen relationships, celebrate their blocks, and create lasting memories.
Thank you to every block club leader, resident, and volunteer who helped make these gatherings possible. Strong blocks build strong neighborhoods, and that is how we keep the
21st Ward thriving—Better Together.
