Dear Neighbor,

This past weekend, I joined the Belden Sawyer Tenant Association and dozens of our neighbors at their Rent Party, which raised over $5,000 for the Organized Communities Against Deportation’s mutual aid fund. This fund was created to assist families in the Chicago area whose loved ones were detained by ICE/CBP with rent, food, medical bills, and other critical expenses. If you’d like to donate to the mutual aid fund, you can donate here. Congrats to BSTA on a successful event!

This morning before I went to City Hall for meetings of the Committee on Finance and Committee on Housing and Real Estate, I joined Cook County Commissioner Jessica Vasquez and former Metropolitan Water Reclamation Commissioner and Polish community leader Daniel Pogorzelski to pass out paczkis at the Logan Square Blue Line Station in celebration of the upcoming Fat Tuesday tradition. Paczkis are a beloved Polish treat typically eaten on Fat Tuesday, the day before Ash Wednesday, as a way to prepare for Lent. The tradition which is still very popular in Chicago was brought here by Polish immigrants.

Avondale has been a historic Polish enclave, and much of Milwaukee Avenue on the northwest side was designated as a Polish Heritage Corridor in 2022. I am honored that our 35th Ward represents so much of our Avondale community and Polish neighbors. Whether you stop at the Kurowski Sausage Shop on Milwaukee Avenue, or one of the many other Polish small businesses, I encourage you to try out a paczki this Fat Tuesday!

On Tuesday at 1 pm, I’ll be joining State Senator Graciela Guzman, State Representative Will Guzzardi, and Cook County Commissioner Jessica Vasquez at the Copernicus Senior Center (3160 N Milwaukee Avenue) for Valentine's Day Senior Bingo! Please share this event with anyone who might be interested in joining us.

Also this week, the Chicago City Council Latino Caucus Foundation (CLCF) opened up its applications for its annual scholarship fund. This scholarship is available to students who are college-bound or are currently enrolled in school to help pay for their education. You can find out more information regarding this $5,000 scholarship on the CLCF website. The application is open until April 26th at 11:59 PM!

Please note that the 35th Ward and 8th District Office will be closed starting tomorrow, Thursday, February 12th in observance of Lincoln’s Birthday and President’s Day, and will reopen on Tuesday, February 17th at 9am for our normal business hours. The upcoming holidays will not affect refuse and recycling service from the Department of Streets and Sanitation.

I hope you have a great week, and a happy Valentine’s Day! ❤️

Sincerely,

Anthony J. Quezada

Alderman, 35th Ward

Ward Updates

Barry and Kimball Substation Updates

We are drawing closer to the long-anticipated finalization of the Barry and Kimball CTA Substation project! As work is being completed, the sidewalk on Barry between N Kimball and N Gresham is temporarily closed until the end of this month to allow for the installation of the building’s paneling.

The substation is expected to be substantially completed in March, with final touches such as the installation of artwork around the new structure installed afterwards. This will have minimal impacts on the surrounding area, and should not require further sidewalk closures.

Hermosa Know Your Rights for Businesses Workshop

On Thursday, February 26th at 6pm, the 35th Ward Office will be partnering with ARISE Chicago, the office of 8th District Cook County Commissioner Jessica Vasquez, and 26th Ward Alder Jessie Fuentes for a business know your rights workshop in the Hermosa neighborhood. The event will provide updates on relevant legislation and policies that may impact businesses during immigration-related enforcement and interactions with government agencies. Participants will have the opportunity to learn best practices and ask questions while connecting with elected officials offering support and resources. Spanish-language interpretation will be provided. Register for the address and to rsvp here.

Chicago Park District Participatory Budgeting

The Chicago Park District (CPkD) is launching a Citywide Participatory Budget (PB) process to deepen community engagement, increase transparency in public spending, and strengthen resident trust in park planning and resource allocation.

Through this initiative, residents, park users, and community stakeholders will be invited to submit specific park improvement ideas for parks across the city. CPkD will evaluate the ideas for viability and then group the ideas submitted into broader project categories. Community members will then vote on which broader categories they would most like the Park District to prioritize for funding initiatives.

The winning category or categories will guide how CPkD allocates the PB capital funds. Projects submitted by individuals within the winning category will be evaluated for the feasibility of the proposed scope and the availability of funding to complete the project. As many feasible projects as possible will be implemented with the funding available. Following a PB model ensures that implemented park improvements reflect the collective priorities of Chicago’s communities. For more information and to submit a project idea, visit the Chicago Park District’s PB page.

Hermosa Community Tree Planting Day

The 35th Ward Office is working with Openlands, an organization that works to protect our natural areas and our tree canopy, the 26th Ward Office, the Office of Cook County Commissioner Jessica Vasquez, and Nixon Elementary on a tree-planting day on April 25th. We are working to identify Hermosa-area residents who are interested in having a tree planted in front of their home at no cost. Trees help our communities by reducing the urban heat island effect, cleaning the air, and absorbing rainwater.

The Hermosa neighborhood area has been identified as a high-priority area for tree planting, given its relatively low canopy coverage. On April 25th, we will come together to take action for our community!

If you are a Hermosa resident who would like a tree planted in front of your home or would like to lend a hand volunteering on April 25th, please email [email protected]. If you would like a tree planted in front of your home, but you do not live in the Hermosa community, please contact the 35th Ward Office for assistance at [email protected] or by call/text at 773-985-3510.
