Summary

Alderman La Spata’s 1st Ward newsletter highlights upcoming work on the Center for Animal Care and Control (CACC) with Ald. Cruz, beginning with an initial meeting and tour this Friday. It also references a downtown briefing on Stonepeak Partners’ potential purchase of the lease for the parking meters, with a public hearing scheduled for this Thursday and further discussion planned for a Finance Committee meeting. The newsletter additionally notes a Virtual 1st Ward “First Look” zoning meeting on June 29 for a proposed zoning map amendment at 2455 N California, and lists community events including tree-pit mulching with Openlands (Saturday), plus performances and festivals this week (e.g., Shakespeare in the park and the Logan Square Arts Festival).

Today's Work: Art, Animals, Parking Meters, & More

1st Ward Newsletter | June 23, 2026

Dear neighbors,

It's been a wonderful and productive day in the 1st Ward that typifies the wonderful variability in my work!

Coming back from a quick morning workout, I got a first look at the new street art permission wall we're working with the art collective Project Logan on over at Western and Logan. You may know their work from the Fullerton and Medill wall as well as the board ups at the Congress Theater. I got a chance to speak with B Boy B (one day he'll tell me his real name!) about the space and the artists' varying inspirations.

Then I hopped on a Zoom with 30th Ward Ald. Cruz about the Center for Animal Care and Control (CACC). I know the conditions at the CACC, for both animals and volunteers, are of great concern for many 1st Ward residents. Ald. Cruz asked me to help lead a working group committed to helping improve those conditions and we officially get to work this Friday for an initial meeting and tour. I'm prepared for it to be as heartbreaking as 1st Ward volunteers have described, but understanding the current conditions are essential to making reforms.

I then headed downtown for briefings related to Stonepeak Partners's potential purchase of the lease of our parking meters. While the conversation itself was privileged and confidential with attorneys helping prepare Council, I feel much more prepared for the public hearing happening this Thursday. Reviewing the terms of the contract passed by my predecessors, it is even more depressing to see the rights they traded away so carelessly. I think we're ready for a very comprehensive Finance Committee meeting.

As soon as I'm done writing we have a meeting regarding Meet Me On Milwaukee, our annual pedestrianization street closure series coming back this August, September, and October. We're even more prepared create a marvelous space for our friends, families, neighbors, and visitors. This gives you a window into why I love the question, "What's a typical day like for you?" There is no typical day and that's one of my favorite things about my job.

Don't forget to join us this Saturday at 9:00 a.m. as we partner with Openlands to care for our parkway trees!

Sincerely,

Alderman La Spata

Zoning

Virtual 1st Ward First Look – June 29, 2026, 6 p.m.

2455 N California (Numerous requests) Property owner requests a zoning map amendment to legally subdivide a formerly-adjacent side yard to the 3-flat at 2453 N California, and establish a two-flat. The zoning map amendment is necessary to create a buildable zoning lot, which would then be improved with a building the matches the predominance of the block (multi-unit residences)
