Dear Chicago,

Martin McGarry, a South Side legend and native of Belmullet, County Mayo, Ireland, passed away on January 24, 2018, after a long battle with amyloidosis. Martin and Kathy McGarry raised their family in the Beverly community on the 10200 block of S. Hoyne Ave. He will always be remembered as a loving husband and father, and for his distinguished career in boxing as a fighter, coach, and mentor. Martin, a proud member of Pipefitters Local 597, operated McGarry's Boxing Club out of his home in Beverly, where he trained world champions and countless youths who benefited from his encouragement and coaching over the years. He was a former Golden Gloves champion, state champion, and Catholic Youth Organization boxing champion. Martin was a leader in the community, a member of St. Barnabas Catholic Parish, and a friend to thousands on the south side. The street dedication will take place tomorrow, August 6th, at 6:00 pm at the intersection of 102nd Street & Hoyne Avenue. All are welcome to come and honor the memory of this wonderful man.

Sincerely,

Matthew J. O'Shea

Alderman, 19th Ward
