11th Ward Newsletter - April 5, 2026

Relevance: 3/10

Summary

Alderman Nicole T. Lee’s 11th Ward newsletter highlights a key potential City Council action this week on Zoning Committee leadership (possibly Ald. Bennett Lawson (44) as chair) as a way to restart stalled zoning meetings affecting development. It also notes ward-level construction and infrastructure work, including spring resurfacing/ADA corner improvements on Wentworth (Cermak to 24th) with rolling closures, and other ongoing water/sewer/lead service line projects causing scheduled lane restrictions and some closures. Other major items include the April 12 spring shredding and prescription drug recycling event, upcoming trash and community forums (One Community Near South on April 28; Clean and Green on April 18), and city/service announcements like April sticker amnesty and a senior financial wellness/unclaimed property workshop.

April 12, 2026

Dear neighbors,

I’m hoping spring is here for real this time and that you had a chance to enjoy the beautiful (albeit windy) weather we had today. A big shoutout to all who came out to our Spring 11th Ward Shred & Prescription Drug Recycling event! Thank you for keeping these things out of the landfill. Thank you to Commissioner John P. Daley, the Cook County Sheriff's Office, and Midway Moving & Storage.

For those who were not able to make it, the Cook County Forest Preserve will also have an upcoming Trash Bash series on April 25, May 16, and May 30, where you can donate a large variety of things in one place including herbicide containers, books, and bicycles.

I will be joining the One Community Near South forum on April 28 with other alders at 637 S. Dearborn St. to make sure the voice of our communities are heard. Please join us. This is a twice a year forum of Alders who represent the South Loop and Chinatown (the Near South) organized by One Community Near South to discuss issues impacting these communities.

Thank you to everyone who came out to Xilin St. Anthony Community Center on Thursday for the Financial Wellness for Seniors: Protect, Claim, & Play! event, and thank you to the State Treasurer’s Office, Lakeside Bake, and Signature 365 Event Production for your support producing the event. I sat down with the representatives from the State Treasurer’s Office who found that I had not one, not two, but seven unclaimed property items for a total of $206! You don’t need to be at an event to find out if you have unclaimed property, visit: https://icash.illinoistreasurer.gov/app/claim-search 24/7!

I was pleased to welcome the Chicago Electronic Music Conference to the Ramova this weekend! Next weekend, the Ramova, Charis Listening Bar and Co_Prosperity will host Bridgeport Day for the Chicago Humanities Festival. Check out the list of events here.

April is still City Sticker Amnesty Month, don’t forget to buy one this month.

Public Safety

Unfortunately, we had an incident on Thursday where a business card advertising illegal sex work was distributed in the 11th Ward in multiple locations, including in Chinatown and near Healy School. Our office shared the information immediately with Chicago Police. A redacted version of that card is shown on the ward Facebook page. If someone hands you this, or something like it, please contact us at 773.254.6677 or [email protected] with the subject heading "brothel ad" with the location and date you received the card. We are working with CPD, the Department of Buildings, and Business Affairs and Consumer Protection to crack down on this illegal and exploitative behavior in our community.

On Friday, I learned of a dispute that the Archdiocese and CPS are having over IDEA services funded by CPS through federal grants. IDEA stands for Individuals with Disabilities Education Act. If you have children in a Catholic school who receive IDEA services from CPS, you may have received notice that the funding has been expended and programs have been cancelled for the rest of the year. I’m reaching out to our school board representatives to better understand what’s happened, how it is that 800 Catholic school students citywide with disabilities have been suddenly disserviced and what, if anything, can be done to mitigate the impact. If you have a student that is impacted, I’d love to hear from you. Please email me at: [email protected].

Upcoming in City Council

This week the, City Council will meet on Wednesday. It is likely we will consider Alderman Bennett Lawson (44) for Zoning Committee Chair, after coming up on three months of missed zoning committee meetings due to a struggle between competing caucuses within the Council, and lack of action by the Mayor over who should be chair of that committee. If a vote does happen, I will support Ald. Lawson’s candidacy. Ald. Lawson has experience in the position, and he served as the chief of staff for former Zoning Chair Ald. Tom Tunney. We must get the Zoning Committee meetings back on track so there are no further delays to development that is desperately needed in our city.

Around the Ward

One of the Greater Bridgeport and South Loop Chamber of Commerce’s most exciting events, the 2026 Revitalize Cocktail Fundraiser, honoring 100 Years of Filbert’s, will take place on Wednesday, April 22nd at the Bridgeport Art Center’s Sculpture Garden. Tickets are available here.

A permit was issued at the end of the last month for a permit for a building at 2314 S. Wentworth—a four-story office and retail building will replace a three story mixed-use building that was demolished in the same location in March 2023.

Construction to complete the work on Wentworth from Cermak to 24th Place will resume beginning April 15th. Please be mindful of posted signs for parking and flaggers directing traffic. More details below.

Our annual Clean and Green is next week on April 18– sign up to volunteer with the Ward! All volunteers will be invited to join in a picnic at McGuane Park after the clean up is completed.

Have a great week!
