45th Ward News and Community Updates

Relevance: 1/10

Summary

Alderman Jim Gardiner’s 45th Ward newsletter highlights city updates including an Austin Avenue pedestrian bridge update, the expected reopening of the Foster Avenue outbound Kennedy on-ramp on August 17, and ongoing issues affecting residents such as trash related to a tent encampment. The newsletter does not describe any specific zoning/development approvals, new housing/transit/street policy ordinances, or ward budget or infrastructure decisions, but it directs readers to the city’s ChiStreetWork portal for active permits and infrastructure projects. Other major items include a Back-to-School supply drive with Vaughn Occupational High School, beat meeting dates for 2026, and a Cook County property tax appeal pre-filing deadline for the 2026 tax year, along with various community and small-business resources.

Chicago Fire Fighters Union - Local 2 celebrated our 125th Anniversary by inviting members and their families to enjoy the newly remodeled union hall.

May Local 2 and other labor unions in Chicago continue to celebrate the successes of fighting for fair wages, safer work conditions, and be a voice for the working class.

Thank you to the Paramedics and Firefighters who proudly serve the

City of Chicago.

The 45th Ward honored the life and legacy of Bernadette Colletti this week on the very street she was raised with her 14 siblings.

Bernadette was a Girl Scout Leader who provided countless young girls the opportunity to excel and grow into successful young women. She guided her young ladies to earn over forty Girl Scouts of America Gold Awards, the highest honor a Scout can achieve. She worked tirelessly in support of forensic activities, contributing greatly to the National Catholic Forensic League as hostess to eight Grand National Tournaments.

Most importantly, family was her number one priority. From cooking a ham for the Travers Family Picnic to setting up kids birthday parties, she was always there to help. She was the oldest daughter of the Travers fifteen, and many called her their strongest sister. From involvement in all of her children’s and grandchildren’s activities, to family vacations across the country, she immersed herself in whatever each day’s adventure brought.

May God bless the Travers and Colleti families and may Bernadette smile down upon us from her righteous place in Heaven.
