Summary

Alderman Daniel La Spata (1st Ward) announced that the Mid‑Year Budget Hearings begin today and that the CTA will host three budget town halls in mid‑September to discuss transit funding and budget priorities. He also highlighted a virtual community meeting on October 6 to review updated zoning plans for an 80‑foot, 50‑unit mixed‑use redevelopment at 2240 N. Milwaukee, and noted concerns over the planned 2027 closure of the Cortland Ave Bridge and the need for alternative safe routes. Additional items include a public survey on EV charging infrastructure, a call for volunteers for the Meet Me On Milwaukee event, and community events at the West Town Library.

Operation Midway Blitz: Know Your Rights

1st Ward Newsletter | September 9, 2025

Dear neighbors,

The Department of Homeland Security has formally announced the launch of their ICE action called "Operation Midway Blitz." Their justifications fly against the now well-proven fact that immigrants, including undocumented immigrants, commit crimes at lower rates than U.S.-born residents but this action directly impacts thousands of our neighbors. Undocumented neighbors, know your rights: to remain silent, not to open the door, and not to sign anything you don't understand. U.S. Citizens, know your rights too: to record what's happening without obstructing, to report suspected ICE sightings to 855-435-7693, and to protest peacefully. I want to encourage residents who do not want to see the National Guard in Chicago to exercise their rights fully and enthusiastically but not to go further than that.

We've also heard from lots of residents concerned about imminent closure of the Cortland Ave Bridge from now through 2027 for repairs. While this bridge is not in the 1st Ward, it directly impacts thousands of 1st Ward residents, particularly any cyclist seeking a safe way to cross the Chicago River between Damen and Kinzie. Both as 1st Ward Alderperson and Chair of the Committee on Pedestrian and Traffic Safety, I'm deeply concerned and have already reached out to the Department of Transportation to understand better the plans for the Cortland crossing long-term as well as what alternative safe routes can be put in place in the interim.

Finally, the oddly-named Mid-Year Budget Hearings for the city begin today. It's an essential opportunity to understand the city's finances and needs as we look toward 2026. The work in front of us is to make sure the city we need aligns with the city we can afford. Please know that I'm fully committed to working toward a sustainable, equitable, and responsible budget for the city.

Sincerely,

Alderman La Spata

The Chicago Department of Transportation is inviting community members to participate in a public survey that will directly inform how CDOT prioritizes and plans for public charging infrastructure, including a pilot program for curbside charging. This work supports Chicago’s EV Framework and will help CDOT better understand the needs of communities across the city and where to best locate EV charging stations. The survey takes about 10 minutes to complete and is completely anonymous. The survey is open until Tuesday, September 30.

The CTA is hosting three budget town halls in mid-September to engage directly with riders and the public. The CTA is at a critical point for transit funding for the region, and the input and partnership of the community will be vital in navigating the challenges ahead. At the events, riders and community members will be able to share their thoughts on the importance of CTA to their commute, their family and friends, and their community. CTA leadership will be at the townhall and will use this information to prioritize budget decisions.
