Dear Chicago,

Ginger Rugai’s 32nd Annual Y-Me Softball Tournament will take place tomorrow, August 29, 2026, at St. Christina Fields and Mt. Greenwood Park. This year’s registration of seventy-two teams filled within 14 hours, setting a new registration record! Approximately 1200 softball players, including over 100 breast cancer survivors, will take the field to raise money for breast cancer research. The tournament begins at 8:00 am. This is the largest all-female 16-inch softball tournament in the world.

The tournament's mission is to raise money to fund breast cancer research. This research has resulted in a 44% decline in breast cancer deaths since 1989 by fueling advancements in prevention, diagnosis, and treatment

At 2:00 pm, the tournament will celebrate breast cancer survivors during the Survivor Ceremony. Each woman’s name and year of survivorship will be read out, and they will be celebrated by their family, friends, teams, and our community. Some of these brave women are currently in treatment. Please visit y-mesoftball.com for additional information.

Sincerely,

Matthew J. O'Shea

Alderman, 19th Ward

Meet Captain Walter H. Dyett

A Concert Performance

Sunday, August 30th, 2 – 3pm

Walker Branch

Walter Henri Dyett, known as “Captain Dyett”, was a music educator, and instrumental figure in the development of jazz and black music in Chicago. Dyett's students took the Chicago jazz sound across the globe.

This program is a live jazz quartet performance by the Charles Heath Quartet, celebrating Chicago hosting the 2026 International Jazz Day with the sounds of Dyett’s internationally renowned tenor saxophone students. A brief 15-minute history of Capt. Walter Dyett, followed by a 45-minute jazz quartet performance.

The Garden Club of Morgan Park - Beverly Hills welcomes guest speaker Claudia Galen Sanchez, founder of the Pilsen-based Women for Green Spaces who will give a presentation on promoting and preserving green spaces and protecting pollinators in urban communities on Wednesday, September 2, 2026 at 10 am at Bethlehem Lutheran Church, 9401 S.
