Dear Chicago,
According to the National Weather Service, a prolonged stretch of dangerous heat and humidity begins today, June 29th. Daily heat indices around 105°F are expected throughout the work week.
Please do not spend extended periods outside, keep yourself hydrated, and keep handy the list of available cooling centers - see the flyer below. For locations, visit Cooling Centers - Map | City of Chicago | Data Portal or chi.gov/cooling.
Please be sure to check in on your elderly neighbors, and call 311 to find your nearest cooling center and for well-being checks for seniors, friends, family, or neighbors. If you, or someone you see, is experiencing heat stroke symptoms, do not hesitate to call 911.
In extreme heat:
- Stay out of the sun. If you must be outside, wear sunscreen SPF 15 or higher.
- Avoid overexertion and strenuous outdoor activities.
- Wear lightweight, light-colored, loose-fitting clothes that cover as much skin as possible to prevent sunburn.
-
Consume plenty of non-alcoholic, non-caffeinated fluids. Water, diluted juices, and electrolyte solutions are best. Stay away from carbonated drinks.
- Avoid alcohol.
- If you are on a fluid-restricted diet or taking diuretics, consult your doctor.
- Stay in the shade as much as possible.
- Keep rooms well-ventilated with air conditioners and fans.
- Keep your windows open if you don't have a fan or air conditioning.
- Cool down with periodic cool baths or showers.
- Take advantage of city cooling centers, public pools, and air-conditioned stores.
- Never leave children, the elderly, or those who require special care during periods of intense summer heat.
- Please make an effort to check on your senior neighbors during the heat wave.
- Seniors and others who may be sensitive to extreme heat should contact friends, neighbors, or relatives periodically throughout the day.
- Seek help if you feel symptoms of heat-related illnesses.
