| Dear 33rd Ward Community, |
|
| This has been a heavy week, as the presence of ICE has been ramping up. We have had at least 2 confirmed cases of our neighbors being abducted. The need is clear for more neighbors to re-engage with the rapid response networks and school patrols. I’d like to use this time to remind our community about some important resources.
The lowest barrier to entry is joining the Whistle Alert Response Network (WARN). This is a channel on the Telegram App that is able to broadcast warnings when rapid responders have identified known ICE agents or vehicles and believe they are about to start detentions. This is a one-way messaging channel, so it won’t be overwhelmed with discussions. It also means that the people who join the channel are not able to “see” one another, so you can still remain anonymous to everyone except the small group of trusted curators who send the broadcast. To join WARN, you just need to download Telegram and click this link.
It is also helpful to follow the Northwest Side Rapid Response Network. You can follow them on Instagram and Facebook. Much like WARN, this is another way to stay aware of ICE’s presence and help reshare their notifications to alert more community members.
In the event that you encounter ICE, it is important to be aware of the Illinois Coalition for Immigrant and Refugee Rights (ICIRR). They have a family support hotline: 855-435-7693. ICIRR’s hotline can be used to report suspected ICE sightings and to connect with resources if someone has been detained. You can also visit this page on their website to find Know Your Rights information translated into several languages, and find links to sign up for training events for Migra Watch and more.
If you have dealt with violence from ICE, please contact Kulis & Assoc for a free consultation to see if you are in a position to file a lawsuit against ICE. We need these lawsuits filed to push the Cook County State's Attorney to investigate ICE after the terror of Operation Midway Blitz. The law firm would provide representation for free. Call (312) 580-1830.
Lastly, our office is stocked with free whistles which we are happy to share with neighbors. While Trump spends millions and billions to terrorize our neighborhoods, as our city, state, and federal infrastructure crumbles, our best hope is to stick together, wear a whistle, and watch out for each other. What Chicago has proudly proven, time and time again, is that we love each other and we keep each other safe.
But I’d like to end on a story of inspiration from one of our dearly departed immigrant neighbors. Last year, the world lost a true trailblazer, Zehra Masood, at the age of 78. She was the sort of person who lived a life of struggle and poetry, becoming a mechanical engineer at a time when the field was dominated by men. Growing up in Hyderabad, India, she moved to Chicago in the 1970s.
I’d like to quote her family member who described her impact after moving here.
In Chicago, Zehra built a distinguished career as a sole engineer in the male-dominated fields of the 1970s and 80s. When a chief engineer once told her to get him coffee, she famously replied, "I’m an engineer, not your secretary." She refused to wear skirts, which were required for females in that era, instead wearing the sari, the traditional Indian garb. Her talent and resilience led her to major Chicago engineering firms, including Harza, Skidmore, Owings & Merrill, and Holabird & Root. Her work shaped the city's skyline, with her designs contributing to iconic projects such as the Sears Tower and the John Hancock Center, as well as numerous Chicago Transit stations (Brown line Kimball, and Kedzie, and Francisco). Even after retirement, she continued her work through her own firm, Zehra Consultants. |
|
| | With this in mind, it was my honor to help Zehra’s family to secure an honorary sign for her on Wilson Ave, between Sacramento Ave and Whipple St where she had lived. Honorary signs are not just symbolic. They remind us of the history of the people who cleared the paths for us and made the world more beautiful. It was such a pleasure to join her family as they honored her memory and celebrated all that she has built. I hope that as you pass by the sign on Wilson Ave, you’re inspired to learn more about Zehra Masood, and about all the neighbors who have shaped and reshaped our community into the beautiful tapestry that we know today. |
|
| Thank you for doing this work with me. Please take a moment this week to help out a neighbor in need. You can always contact my office if you have any questions. We are here to help.
In solidarity, Rossana Rodríguez Sánchez 33rd Ward Alderperson |

| Impact for Equity — Property Tax AppealsThe property tax appeal system in Cook County is complex and difficult to navigate, so few homeowners appeal and even fewer succeed. Impact for Equity has developed a set of checklists and resources to simplify the process and empower homeowners to challenge inequitable property tax practices. (Available in English, Spanish, Chinese, and Tagalog at this website.) |
|
| Get Medicaid FactsThe Cook County Medicaid Impact Workgroup, a coalition convened by Cook County Health, has launched “Get Medicaid Facts," a new website and communications toolkit designed to help people understand upcoming changes to Medicaid eligibility and what steps they can take now to keep their coverage.
