Summary

Alderwoman Maria Hadden’s 49th Ward Update covers ongoing development and infrastructure activity, including Loyola University construction at 6347 N Broadway, the demolition at 1224 W Loyola Ave with related street closures, and paving on N. Glenwood Ave plus a Chase/Paulina street lighting project. It notes housing and city policy steps such as the TaxSmart Mortgage Credit Program, along with street closures for Good Friday and other infrastructure notices. The message also addresses the March tragedies involving Sheridan Gorman and Firefighter Michael Altman (with the alderwoman’s apology and safety remarks), the temporary remote-work shift for staff due to threats, and a slate of community announcements and events (including the Sheridan Gorman Memorial & Scholarship Fund GoFundMe, the 49th Ward Clean and Green on April 18, and local cultural/arts listings).

Good morning neighbors,

Last week, our ward experienced two terrible losses of life. Firefighter Michael Altman died fighting a fire, and Loyola student Sheridan Gorman was shot and killed while at the park with friends. Authorities ruled the fire an arson, and the shooting a homicide. Over the weekend, police made arrests in both cases, and the suspects have been charged. Thank you to our Firefighters, EMTs, the police of the 24th District, and Area 3 detectives for their dedication to our community. Our sincerest condolences are with the families and friends of Michael and Sheridan. The deaths of these two individuals are a loss to us all.

As the investigation of Sheridan's murder unfolded over the weekend, the suspect police took into custody was identified as a recent immigrant to our country. Gun violence and immigration policy have been two of the most challenging issues facing our country and our city. Sheridan's murder has become a national story touching on these painful and difficult issues. I know that people are in pain, and tensions will be high as we work to find solutions to keep everyone in our community safe. I ask that here, in the 49th Ward, we bring compassion, patience, and understanding to debates and discussions we have with our neighbors about this in the coming weeks.

In recent days, some of my comments about the investigation surrounding the murder of Sheridan Gorman have been circulating in conservative news cycles and social media groups. I've included my statement in response the media backlash below. This, along with the high-profile nature of the tragedy, has led to an overwhelming number of phone calls and emails to my office. The majority of these communications are from out-of-state individuals who are angry about my comments and Chicago's sanctuary city status. Our social media pages have also been inundated with negative reviews and hateful comments. The content of the phone messages and emails that my staff and I have been receiving is explicit and disturbing. The messages and calls include threats of violence against myself, my family, and my team, including racist, misogynistic, and homophobic language. Additionally, many callers have been verbally abusive to my staff, making it difficult to serve the constituents of the 49th Ward.

To ensure we were available to the constituents of the 49th Ward and to protect the safety and wellness of my team, I moved them to remote work on Wednesday and Thursday and gave them Friday off to rest and recuperate. I continued to work as usual. Our office will reopen as usual on Monday.

Additionally, several people called or emailed me, inquiring about the commotion outside the Ward Office on Tuesday. There was a group protesting anti-immigrant, anti-sanctuary city policies. Counterprotestors also showed up, and police intervened to ensure both groups could exercise their First Amendment rights safely. This group may plan other protests at the office in the future. We must respect the First Amendment rights of everyone, so if you encounter this group, do not engage in anything that could escalate into physical altercations. Though they may not represent the views and values of our community, we will always respect and uphold the civil liberties afforded to everyone in our nation by our Constitution.

Have a safe and restful weekend,

Alderwoman Maria Hadden

Statement on the Murder of Sheridan Gorman

On Thursday, March 19, Loyola freshman Sheridan Gorman was murdered. Sheridan and her friends were in the park, and a masked man at Pratt Pier shot and killed her. As I previously shared in social media posts and interviews on the day of the murder - my sincerest condolences go to Sheridan’s family and community. Within two days, Chicago Police were able to identify a person of interest, take him into custody, and on Sunday, formally file murder charges against him. I am grateful to the police of our 24th District and Area 3 detectives for their swift work in apprehending the suspect. It’s still unclear what motivated this terrible act of violence, but the person who shot Sheridan is the only one responsible for her death.

Over the past few days, a clip from an interview I did with Fox Live about the murder has gone viral on conservative media. The interviewer asked me whether Sheridan was targeted by the shooter and whether this was related to the “Duck Walk Killer,” who terrorized our community in 2018. I replied, “no,” that this seemed to be “a senseless wrong place, wrong time tragedy.” In the interview, I also mentioned that Sheridan and the other students were doing a normal activity - they were out at the park enjoying it the way so many of us do.

In an effort to make sense of a senseless situation, I said things that landed wrong with some people. My comments were never intended to blame the victim or to imply that Sheridan should not have been out enjoying the park or that it was her fault that she was shot. In the interview, I tried my best to share the limited information I had with our community as quickly as possible while helping address people's fears about the shooting.  I sincerely apologize for any additional pain that my comments may have caused. The fact that some media outlets are intentionally creating sound bites to misconstrue my words during this tragedy is also unfortunate.

Since Thursday, my team and I have been focused on supporting Sheridan’s family and our community. Sheridan’s life was stolen from her. At this moment, the group that should be at the center of our thoughts is her family. They are grieving the loss of their daughter, and our community and the Loyola community are grieving a life cut short by gun violence. As we do during every tragedy, especially those in which a life is cut short, Rogers Park sticks together. We hold one another in our grief. We show one another kindness. We support each other. And this is what we will continue to do.

Sheridan’s family has started a GoFundMe to launch the Sheridan Gorman Memorial & Scholarship Fund. I hope you will join me in making a donation so that Sheridan’s legacy can continue through this scholarship. Please give what you can.

Support a local Rogers Park resident with their top surgery!

If you are able to, please consider helping Kyren through this process via one of the options below:
  • Donate to Kyren's GoFundMe
