| | Dear Neighbor,
This past Tuesday, April 7, marked one year since being sworn in as your 35th Ward Alderman. I am deeply honored and humbled to represent our ward and diverse neighborhoods. I am proud of all the great work and wins we have delivered so far over the past year. Together, we have worked to protect our neighbors from ICE, secured millions of dollars in investments for our parks, infrastructure, and affordable housing, and connected thousands of residents to essential city services and resources. I am excited to continue building our ward’s model of effective, responsive, and progressive good governance alongside all of you! Earlier this week, I joined with Commissioner Castañeda of the Chicago Department of Housing, Bickerdike Redevelopment Corporation, Palenque LSNA, Logan Square Preservation, and community members to hold a press conference, to celebrate the recent announcement of funding for the Metropolitan “L” Apartments at 2525 N Kedzie, through federal Low-Income Tax Credits and city assistance. This proposal will include up to 96 affordable units, including one, two, and three-bedroom units. This was an exciting announcement and served as an opportunity to celebrate this milestone with the local community partners who are working to make this project a reality. You can learn more by reading the recent Block Club Chicago coverage here.

| On Tuesday, I had the opportunity to meet with leaders of the Amigos de Darwin parent group. Amigos de Darwin is a parent-led group to support Darwin Elementary in Logan Square, and it was such a pleasure to hear about the exciting work that they are doing to support the school, as well as the other families at Darwin. Our schools faced troubling times at the beginning of the school year as ICE descended on our city, and it was groups like Amigos de Darwin and our Northwest side Rapid Response Network who stepped up to the plate and organized sidewalk solidarity, school watch, and mutual aid systems for our school families.
On Wednesday, the Committee on Housing and Real Estate voted to pass my amendment to the Fair Notice Ordinance, which seeks to clarify language in the ordinance. The goal of the Fair Notice Ordinance was to give renters a reasonable amount of time to locate alternate housing and move without facing an eviction filing, which can impair a renter’s credit for years and significantly hinder their housing search.
I crafted this amendment in coordination with the Law Center for Better Housing based upon experiences they had in the courtroom. My amendment clarifies and codifies the City Council’s original intent by explicitly stating that a landlord may not file an eviction action until the applicable 30-, 60-, or 120-day notice period has fully expired. This ensures that long-term renters are given the full notice period to secure alternative housing before being subjected to eviction proceedings. I look forward to continuing the discussion around this amendment with my colleagues and stakeholders and hope to pass it during the next City Council meeting.
On Thursday, I had the pleasure of visiting Mozart Elementary in Logan Square as part of my tour of every school in the 35th Ward. I met with Principal Mota and Assistant Principal Cabrera and toured the school grounds, discussed potential capital improvement projects, and their upcoming open enrollment for Pre-k. You can enroll your child in CPS Pre-K starting on Monday, April 12th. You can check out the schedule of events for Pre-K week on CPS’s Pre-K page here. |

| Later in the evening, my office hosted a meeting in coordination with the Department of Water Management regarding upcoming water main, sewer main, and lead service line replacement work that will be happening in the Irving Park community. I was so pleased that over 60 neighbors attended our meeting to hear more about this project in detail to modernize our aging water and sewer infrastructure. | Finally, I would like to wish good luck to the Logan Square Chamber of Commerce on their outdoor dry run of the new Logan Square Farmers Market configuration this Sunday, April 12th, between 8:30 AM and 3:00 PM. While this is not the official first day of the market season, vendors will still be actively selling products. The market will be hosted in the newly constructed “Milwaukee Avenue Plaza” in Logan Square proper and portions of Logan Boulevard between Kedzie Boulevard and Milwaukee Avenue. I’m very excited for this new iteration of the Logan Square Farmers Market and look forward to its continued success.
I hope you have a safe and fun weekend!
Sincerely,
Anthony J. Quezada Alderman, 35th Ward
