Dear Neighbors,
WOW... what a way to kick off the school year!

Despite the rain, our 3rd Annual Back to School Bash was nothing short of incredible. Students headed home with backpacks full of school supplies, and Clarendon Park was filled with laughter, community, and so much love. Thank you to every family who came out, every volunteer who gave their time, every community organization that hosted a resource table, and every business, donor, and sponsor who believed in this event. This day simply would not have been possible without you.

A special thank you to Kuumba Lynx, our incredible nonprofit partner and the entire Clarendon Park team, whose flexibility and hard work helped us seamlessly move the event indoors and make the day a success. We are also deeply grateful to every sponsor and donor who helped bring this event to life, from Lime's helmet giveaways and Trader Joe's reusable grocery bags, to raffle prizes donated by Crema, Nabala, Studio US, and so many other generous businesses that invested in our community. Your support helped make this year's Bash our biggest and most impactful yet. The 46th Ward truly showed up, and from the bottom of my heart, thank you for reminding us what community looks like.

Thank you to everyone who also joined us at Clarendon Park for National Night Out on Tuesday! Hosted by the Chicago Police Department, National Night Out is an annual nationwide event that brings neighbors, officers, community organizations, and local leaders together to strengthen relationships and build safer, more connected communities. It was wonderful to see so many neighbors come out, connect with local officers, and spend time together at Clarendon Park.
As summer begins to wind down, I want to recognize our incredible interns and fellows for everything they contributed to the 46th Ward over the past several months. I am so grateful for their curiosity, hard work, and commitment to serving our neighbors, and we are excited to see their continued growth and development. Thank you Bruno, Cameron, Adeeza, Takiyah, and Aris for spending your summer with the 46th Ward!

From supporting the planning and execution of our Back to School Bash to analyzing our ward’s infrastructure gaps, conducting research, and helping move important ward projects forward, our interns have been an invaluable part of our team this summer. One of our interns, Cameron, led a project mapping the 46th Ward lakefront and identified potential accessible parking locations because accessibility along the lakefront is important to my office. Neighbors who use wheelchairs, families with strollers, older adults, and people with limited mobility should be able to enjoy one of our city's greatest public resources.
Thank you to the Chicago Park District for joining our office along the lakefront this to assess his proposed locations of additional accessible parking spaces for people with disabilities. Over the next few weeks, my office will continue engaging stakeholders and partner agencies to develop a robust, thoughtful proposal to share with the Chicago Department of Transportation.

There's still time to help shape infrastructure investments in the 46th Ward! We've extended the deadline Community Budget idea submissions to August 17, 2026 as we continue gathering ideas for how to invest our community's menu funds.

As we consider future improvements throughout the ward, we want to hear directly from neighbors about the projects that would make the biggest difference in their communities. Ideas could include pedestrian safety improvements, street and sidewalk upgrades, accessibility projects, public spaces, transportation infrastructure, and more. If you haven't submitted an idea yet, we encourage you to share one with us here.

Thank you to Mayor Brandon Johnson for stopping by Clarendon Courts this week to spend time with our neighbors! We’re also grateful to Related Management for coordinating our visit and to our Clarendon Courts neighbors for such a warm welcome. It was a great opportunity to connect, share resources, hear feedback, and answer questions directly from the community.
Lastly - the Chicago Air & Water Show is fast approaching, returning Saturday, August 15 and Sunday, August 16, as part of the nationwide celebration of America250. As one of the nation's largest free-admission air and water exhibitions, the event draws thousands of visitors to Chicago's lakefront each year.

Key Dates & Times Rehearsal: Friday, August 14 | 10:30 AM–3:00 PM Day One: Saturday, August 15 | 10:30 AM–3:00 PM Day Two: Sunday, August 16 | 10:30 AM–3:00 PM
While the show brings plenty of excitement and festivities, I also recognize that the increased aircraft noise, crowds, traffic, and activity can be disruptive for neighbors who live nearby. This year, my office has taken additional steps to connect with event organizers, share neighborhood concerns, and make sure neighbors have the information and resources they need ahead of the event.
For more details, including rehearsal times, viewing information, transportation guidance, noise resources, pet safety tips, and City alerts, reference the 46th Ward Community News below. |

Please allow additional travel time and consider alternate routes when possible.
Loud Noise Resources Please note that aircraft activity and related Chicago Air & Water Show noise may begin as early as Thursday, August 13. We understand that loud noises can be difficult, inconvenient, and traumatic for some of our community members. As such, we’ve compiled a series of resources to help neighbors who may need to find support for themselves or their family members. Loud aircraft noise from the Air and Water Show may affect or startle pets. recommends planning ahead to help keep animals safe and comfortable and shared the following tips: Keep pets indoors during peak performance hours whenever possible. Walk dogs before peak performance hours and always keep them leashed outdoors. Close windows, blinds and curtains to help reduce outside noise. Create a quiet, familiar space where pets can rest. Make sure identification tags and microchip information are current in case a pet becomes startled and gets loose. If your pet has a history of severe anxiety during loud events, consult your veterinarian before the weekend.
Planning to Attend? Admission to the Chicago Air & Water Show is free. If you're heading to the lakefront: Arrive early and allow additional travel time. Back-to-School State Sales Tax Holiday August 7, 2026, through August 16, 2026
As families continue preparing for the school year, we also want to make sure you are aware of Illinois' Back-to-School Sales Tax Holiday, which begins this week from August 7 through August 16. During this period, the state portion of the sales tax on eligible back-to-school purchases is reduced by 5 percentage points!
For retailers, the tax breakdown is:

Businesses located within the MPEA area should add an additional 1%, bringing the holiday tax rate to 6.5%. Please note that the MPEA area extends approximately 100 feet north of Diversey. To learn which items qualify for the reduced tax rate, visit the Illinois Department of Revenue website. Please note: This information is specifically for retailers selling eligible back-to-school items.
What action must the retailer take? Retailers must adjust their method of collecting sales tax so that beginning on August 7, 2026, and ending at the close of business August 16, 2026, they will collect the reduced tax rate on qualifying items. The sales tax rate that must be used during the holiday period is the rate currently in effect on the date of the holiday minus 5.00 percent (5.00%).
If you missed the Back to School Bash last week, Halo Haven Foundation is hosting a school supply giveaway on Sunday, August 9 at Margate Park! They are still recruiting volunteers and need support with event setup, distributing school supplies and uniforms, and cleaning up after the event. If you’re interested in volunteering, reach out to Dede at [email protected].
On Friday, August 21 from 12 pm to 3 pm - Christmas in the Wards is hosting a "Back to School Giveaway” for wards across the city, including our ward! Head to Malcolm X College, 1900 W. Jackson Blvd for free school supplies, clothes, shoes and food!

Have You Visited the Poetry Fence? One of the 46th Ward's most charming hidden gems can be found along the 4400 Block of Malden, where a simple fence has blossomed into a space for creativity and connection. What began as a way for a small group of neighbors to stay connected through poetry during the COVID-19 pandemic has grown into a community art installation.
Originally filled with poems from the group's weekly poetry gatherings, the fence soon invited neighbors to join in by leaving blank tags and a pen for anyone passing by. Today, the majority of the poems hanging on the fence have been written by neighbors, creating a beautiful collection of shared thoughts, memories, and moments of inspiration.
The Poetry Fence is a reminder that art has a way of bringing people together, one poem at a time. If you're walking through the neighborhood, stop by, take a read, and maybe even leave a few words of your own.

Some businesses serve food. Others serve community. Uptown Nutrition Chi does both.
When Tayo and her mother opened Uptown Nutrition Chi at 4548 N. Broadway 13 years ago, they had a simple but powerful vision: make healthy eating accessible while creating a space where every person who walks through the door feels like family.

Today, that vision is thriving. From protein-packed smoothies and refreshing teas to delicious crepes, waffles, pancakes, and nourishing bowls, Uptown Nutrition Chi proves that healthy choices don't have to sacrifice flavor. Every item on the menu is crafted with wellness in mind—without compromising on taste. But what truly sets this neighborhood gem apart isn't just what's on the menu—it's the atmosphere. Bright, welcoming, and full of positive energy, Uptown Nutrition Chi has become a gathering place where neighbors can connect, recharge, and leave feeling a little healthier than when they arrived.

Their commitment to community extends well beyond their doors. Seniors receive 10% off every Tuesday, first responders enjoy a 5% discount, and the space is available to rent for private events. They're also excited to partner with local entrepreneurs by hosting small business pop-ups, creating even more opportunities to support our local community.
Businesses like Uptown Nutrition Chi remind us that investing in our neighbors can be just as important as investing in a great meal. Whether you're stopping in for a post-workout smoothie, meeting a friend over breakfast, or simply looking for a welcoming place to unwind, you'll find plenty to love at this Uptown favorite.
Business Hours:
Monday–Friday: 7:00 AM – 5:00 PM Saturday: Closed Sunday: Closed
We are proud to celebrate the small businesses that make the 46th Ward such a unique place to call home. |

Zoning Change Open for Feedback! - 1429 W. Irving Park
A potential buyer of 1429 W. Irving Park is seeking a zoning change from B3-2 to B2-3 in order to construct a five-story mixed use building on the site of an existing parking lot. The proposed building would include 36 residential units, 4,400 square feet of ground floor retail space, and 25 parking spaces. The proposed building would mostly consist of family-sized units: 8 three-bedroom units, 20 two-bedroom units, 4 one-bedroom units, and 4 studio apartments. Seven of the 36 residential units (i.e., 20%) would be designated as affordable units via the Affordable Requirements Ordinance. Fourteen of the 25 parking spaces would be interior garage spaces; the other 11 would be exterior spaces. All parking would be accessible via the alley and the proposal includes the elimination of an existing curb cut on Irving Park Road.
The 46th Ward Office coordinated a presentation from the developers at a Southport Neighbors Association (SNA) meeting at 7 PM on Monday, July 27 for in-person discussion and feedback. We are seeking additional feedback through our online feedback form, which opened for responses on Monday, July 27 and will be stay open through at least Friday, August 14.
You can see the street-facing elevation of the building below, and check out all the project details on the ward website here.

640 W Irving Park (American Islamic College / AIC) - Development Update! Over the past two weeks, the 46th Ward Office has received some outreach around the developments at 640 W. Irving Park / the American Islamic College, related to permitting and the recent sale of the parking lot. We are including the most recent updates below.
Several weeks ago, the American Islamic College sold the parking lot in the middle of the site to CityPads. The zoning entitlements (for a residential tower) from the existing Planned Development (approved in 2023 before Ald. Clay took office) are still in effect for this middle portion. Any expansions to the existing proposal (either a taller building or more units) would require a Planned Development (PD) Amendment and would go through the 46th Ward Community Zoning Process. A developer is permitted to build within the existing zoning envelope (i.e. a shorter building and/or building with fewer units) without going through the PD Amendment process. We would still share any new details about the project with the community as we become aware of them and host a community meeting as appropriate. CityPads has communicated that they plan to continue renting parking spaces in the lot to neighbors; they are currently finalizing the logistical and operations arrangements. KGiles LLC, the original development entity, owns the existing AIC building and is proceeding with the adaptative reuse project to do a residential conversion of the site. Though they recently applied for building permits, they are still currently seeking financing and finalizing potential contractors and do not yet have a construction timeline. If and when they have a construction timeline, we will co-host a construction logistics meeting with their team for community members.
Please reach out to us if you have any questions about this - given that multiple developers are now involved in what was originally proposed as a single project, we understand that the situation can be confusing.

| | Residential Resurfacing coming to a street near you!
Good news, neighbors! Get ready to say goodbye to more potholes. CDOT is resurfacing the following residential streets this paving season! Leland between Clark and Dover - Paving Completed Buena between Clarendon and Marine Drive - Paving Completed Hutchinson between Hazel and Marine Drive - Milled, Paving scheduled for next week pending Department of Water Management (DWM) sewer reapirs. Sunnyside between the CTA Station and Broadway - Paving Completed Clarendon between Wilson and Lawrence - Paving Completed Lakeside between Marine and Clarendon - Paving Completed
We understand that having several simultaneous resurfacing projects in the neighborhood is disruptive and creates parking challenges. Our office will actively follow up with to ensure the work happens as quickly as possible; we also know that signs were seemingly put up too early and have communicated neighbors' frustration to CDOT.
We are also following up with CDOT to ensure that Pine Grove between Grace and Irving Park is resurfaced this year as well through the “Collector Street Resurfacing Program.”
Overnight parking on all streets listed above will continue to be available but parking will be restricted as needed during work hours - make sure to pay attention to any orange signs put up on these streets to avoid getting ticketed or towed! |

| | Alley Reconstruction - Malden / Magnolia / Leland / Lawrence!
Malden / Magnolia neighbors, good news!
Your alley reconstruction project is now complete and all neighbors should be able to park in their garages!
Several weeks ago, CDOT (Chicago Department of Transportation) crews began the long-awaited project to rebuild the alley bound by Malden, Magnolia, Leland, and Lawrence.
Over the course of construction, removed the former asphalt surface and replaced it with more durable concrete, replaced existing catch basins and drainage structures as needed, added a new catch basin near the northern end of the alley to improve drainage, and replaced utility structures as needed to ensure proper drainage and sloping.
Crews will come back next week to complete hydroseeding and other punch-list work. Due to a potential Comcast / ComEd / AT&T wire conflict (there are low-hanging AT&T and Comcast wires on a ComEd pole that may be hit by garbage trucks), trash pickup has not yet returned to the alley. Our office is in contact with CDOT, ComEd, and AT&T to remedy the issue as quickly as possible. |

| | Say Goodbye to Potholes on Sheridan! In May, Chicago Department of Transportation (CDOT) contractors began resurfacing Sheridan Road between Montrose and Foster to fix the wear and tear on the street. The resurfacing project includes pedestrian safety improvements, including curb extensions and paint-and-post bump-outs opposite of “T” intersections for traffic safety.
Paving is now complete! Crews finished laying the asphalt last week and are completing the remaining striping and signage over the next two weeks.
Resurfacing Construction RemindersDuring construction, signs will often be posted to limit parking during workdays to enable construction access. Please move your vehicle to avoid tickets. Parking will generally remain available overnight and on weekends. Be sure to check signage.
If you want to learn more about the project, check out the presentation from our online briefing on our website! |

| | 4600 - 4800 N. Racine - Water Main Update: Plumbing Work is Complete!
In May, the Department of Water Management (DWM) began work on a project to replace the water main on Racine between Wilson and Broadway. This project entails replacing the existing (more than 120 year-old!) water main and replacing all existing lead service lines along this stretch of Racine.
As of today (Friday, August 7), crews have installed the new water main, installed all new service lines, and shut off the old water main; all underground plumbing work has been completed and there will be no more water shutoffs on the corridor.
Crews will begin restoration work in no more than 30 days (early September) and restoration (repaving and fixing all impacted curbs and sidewalks) should be complete by the end of October at the latest.
Parking restrictions will only return when restoration work starts.
Please let us know if you have any questions or concerns by giving my office a call at 773-878-4646 or via email at [email protected] |

New Streetlights Coming to Sheridan Road (Montrose to Buena)
Neighbors, new street lights are coming to Sheridan Road!
CDOT (Chicago Department of Transportation) contractor will install new and more reliable streetlights on this stretch of Sheridan. Given the limited extent of the segment under construction, the supervising engineers anticipate the project should be completed before Labor Day, as long as the weather cooperates.
Crews will install new streetlights with "piggy-back" lights (which provide better sidewalk illumination) over the next several weeks. Once the new streetlights are installed, electrified, and functioning, crews will remove the old ones. Afterward, they will complete concrete and asphalt restoration as necessary.
We understand that streetwork across the ward can cause parking challenges, and we are doing our best to keep all projects on track and on time. If you have any questions or concerns about this work, please reach out to my office at 773-878-4646 or via email at [email protected]. |

New Streetlights Coming to 4600-4800 Beacon Street
Neighbors, you may have noticed even more orange no-parking signs in Sheridan Park!
These restrictions are in place to enable CDOT (Chicago Department of Transportation) contractors to install new and more reliable streetlights on this stretch of Beacon. The supervising engineers anticipate this project should be complete by the end of October, as long as the weather cooperates.
Crews will install new street lights with "piggy-back" lights (which provide better sidewalk illumination) over the next several weeks. Once the new streetlights are installed, electrified, and functioning, crews will remove the old ones. Afterward, they will complete concrete and asphalt restoration as necessary.
The parking impacts for this project will be most significant over the next week as crews complete the directional boring (installing the underground conduits that power the new street lights) and dig foundations for the new light poles.
If you have any questions or concerns about this work, please reach out to the 46th Ward Office at 773-878-4646 or via email at [email protected].
