Six Ward Family,
Yesterday, the City Council took an important step to honor Police Officer Dorelle C. Brandon by advancing a resolution to rename the 3rd District Police Station in her memory.
I am grateful to have served as the lead sponsor of this effort and sincerely thank my 48 City Council colleagues for joining in support and signing the resolution. Their partnership reflects a shared commitment to ensuring that the stories of those who served with courage are properly recognized.
Officer Brandon served with dedication in the 3rd District and was a trailblazer as a Black woman in law enforcement. On January 25, 1984, while working undercover in a narcotics operation, she was tragically shot and killed—becoming the first female Chicago police officer to lose her life in the line of duty. Her life and service represent both the progress made and the barriers that were challenged in the pursuit of public safety and opportunity.
As we observe Women’s History Month, it is especially meaningful to uplift the legacy of a Black woman whose courage and sacrifice helped shape the history of policing in our city.
The resolution now moves to the Police and Fire Committee as the next step toward formally renaming the station in Officer Brandon’s honor, helping to ensure her legacy is permanently recognized in the community she served.
