| | | Dear Neighbors,
Happy October, 46th Ward! Spooky season is officially here, fall is in full swing, and somehow we are already welcoming a brand-new month! We closed out September with another busy weekend around the Ward, and kicked off the weekend by teaming up with Thorek Memorial Hospital and RDI Recycling to bring free electronic recycling directly to our neighbors and WOW, did you all show up!
Together, we collected several 55-inch TVs, an 85-inch TV, three full containers of laptops and tablets, scooters, and even a titanium-frame bike! That’s a whole lot of electronics kept out of the landfill and given the opportunity to be responsibly recycled. The turnout was so incredible that RDI told us they believe this was one of the largest collections they’ve ever had!
A huge thank you to Thorek Memorial Hospital and RDI Recycling for partnering with us, and to every neighbor who cleaned out those closets, basements, and garages and brought their old electronics out. Clearly, the 46th Ward was ready for a little fall cleaning!

And speaking of celebrating our community, I joined Christopher House for a really special afternoon centered around Uptown’s history, culture, resilience, and the people who have helped shape this neighborhood into what it is today.
We had the privilege of Shermann “Dilla” Thomas lead us through a Mahogany tour where traveled through Uptown’s storied streets. We reflected on the generations who came before us while also learning more about Christopher House’s role in supporting Chicago children and families and growing alongside this community.
Thank you to the entire Christopher House team for inviting me along for the ride and for creating such a thoughtful way to celebrate Uptown’s past while continuing to invest in its future. There is so much history right here in our own backyard, and I’m always grateful for opportunities to learn more about it!

And of course, I had to make my way over to East Lakeview Neighbors’ (ELVN) Oktoberfest! It was such a good time getting outside, catching up with neighbors, grabbing some food, and enjoying a little fall fun in the neighborhood.
Thank you to everyone who helped put it together and to all the neighbors who came out! I’m always happy for an excuse to spend a beautiful fall day out and about in the 46th Ward.

This month is also Domestic Violence Awareness Month, and we started it off by coming together at Truman College to make sure our neighbors know about the resources and support available right here in our community. A huge thank you to all of our community partners who joined us, including the Circuit Court of Cook County, the Illinois Attorney General’s Office, Apna Ghar, and The Network: Advocating Against Domestic Violence, for taking the time to connect with our community and share important information and support.
These conversations aren’t always easy, but they are important. We’re grateful for the organizations doing this work every day and helping make sure survivors and families know they are not alone. Throughout October, we’ll continue doing our part to raise awareness, share resources, and remind our neighbors that support is available.

And finally, we’re excited to welcome the Illinois Secretary of State’s Mobile DMV back to the 46th Ward this Saturday, October 3, from 10 AM–2 PM at Clarendon Park Field House (4501 N. Clarendon Ave.)! Neighbors with appointments will be able to take care of several services right in the neighborhood, including driver’s licenses, state IDs, REAL IDs, vehicle registration, and license plate stickers.
As a reminder, this event is by appointment only, and we are officially FULL! We’re so glad to see so much interest in bringing these services directly to our community and hope to continue offering opportunities like this in the future.
For those who secured an appointment, please make sure to bring all required documents and an accepted form of payment. You can find a full list of acceptable documents at ILSOS.gov . Please note that cash is not accepted and written and road tests will not be available.
We look forward to seeing everyone who signed up on Saturday!

Yours in Service, Alderwoman Angela Clay |

BIG NEWS: The Uptown Theatre Is Opening Its Doors for Open House Chicago!

After decades of being closed to the public, our beloved Uptown Theatre is officially joining the Chicago Architecture Center’s Open House Chicago Festival, happening October 17–18! And yes, that means neighbors will have a rare opportunity to step inside one of Uptown’s most iconic landmarks!
Built in 1925, the Uptown Theatre is celebrating more than 100 years of history right here in our neighborhood. Once home to movies, concerts, vaudeville performances, and so much more, this incredible 4,400-seat theater has been closed since 1981. For many of us, it’s a building we’ve walked past countless times, admired from the outside, and dreamed of seeing come back to life.
Well, here's an opportunity to get a glimpse inside! Visitors will be able to explore the theatre's Broadway lobby and even enter its rarely accessed auditorium in guided groups. How exciting is that?!
Open House Chicago is one of the largest festivals of its kind in the world, opening the doors to more than 200 architecturally, historically, and culturally significant sites across 30 Chicago neighborhoods, all for FREE!
And we’re especially proud that Uptown is part of this year's celebration, with TimeLine Theatre also making its Open House Chicago debut right here in our neighborhood! And the Uptown Theatre isn't the only neighborhood treasure opening its doors! Seven other Uptown sites are participating this year:
5040–5060 North Marine Drive Condominiums
Buddhist Temple of Chicago
The CheckOut
Graceland Cemetery and Arboretum
Haitian American Museum of Chicago
St. Mary of the Lake Roman Catholic Church
TimeLine Theatre
Uptown Theatre (our big announcement!)
We're incredibly proud to see so much of Uptown's history, architecture, culture, and creativity represented in this citywide celebration. Our neighborhood has so many stories to tell, and it's exciting to see them getting the attention they deserve! A few important details: Open House Chicago is free, with no advance registration required. Uptown Theatre tours are scheduled for 10 AM–3 PM on both Saturday, October 17, and Sunday, October 18. Visitors will enter through the main lobby for a short guided auditorium tour, and photography will not be permitted inside.
Open House Chicago Mark your calendars, 46th Ward! Visit openhousechicago.org for the full list of participating sites, hours, and details to plan your weekend.

At 3617 N. Broadway St., a new business has joined the ward! Cooking With Cass brings neighbors together around good food, great company, and a little kitchen fun.

Owner Cassandra “Cassie” Crist took an unconventional path to the culinary world. After two decades in public accounting—working her way from Staff Accountant to Principal and earning recognition as one of Forbes’ Top 200 CPAs in America—Cassie decided it was time to trade spreadsheets and boardrooms for what she had always loved: bringing people together around a table.
Today, Cooking With Cass offers hands-on cooking classes designed to make cooking approachable, social, and fun, whether you’re comfortable in the kitchen or still figuring out which knife to use. The space also hosts themed dinners and is available for private events, making it a great neighborhood option for birthdays, celebrations, team outings, or simply getting a group of friends together for something a little different.
At the heart of it all is Cassie’s belief that food is about more than what’s on the plate—it’s a way to connect, celebrate, and create memories with the people around us.
So, if you’re looking to sharpen your cooking skills, try something new, or plan your next gathering, stop by Cooking With Cass at 3617 N. Broadway St. and see what’s cooking!

Zoning Change: 4531 N. Clark Street

Alderwoman Clay has decided to support a proposed zoning change at 4531 N. Clark Street from C1-2 to C1-3 to enable the construction of a 4-story, 9-unit condo building with two ground floor retail spaces.
The buyer and developer of the site is Platinum Homes - the same developer as 4713 N. Clark at Clark/Leland. The existing building includes two storefronts, one of which is occupied by a clothing retailer, and one of which is vacant.
The proposed building would include 9 for-sale condominium units (all 3-bedroom units) across three floors, approximately 3,200 square feet of ground-floor retail space subdivided into two storefronts, 10 vehicular parking spaces, and 13 bicycle parking spaces. As the development moves forward, we are working with the development team to explore the possibility of adding more bike parking and ensuring that there is enough space for e-bikes and cargo bikes. The proposed building would include an elevator and all units would be accessible.
The existing zoning permits a building of the same height and nearly the same bulk as the proposed building; the developers sought a zoning change primarily to enable the addition of one more unit, 2,400 more square feet of floor area, and more parking spaces. As the proposed building has fewer than 10 units, it is not possible to require affordable units through Chicago’s Affordable Requirements Ordinance.
An online community meeting for neighbors was held at 6PM on August 27, and the development team also presented the plans to the Ravenswood Chamber of Commerce and the Uptown United Development Partners, who provided a letter of support for the project.
The proposal adds nine family-sized units to a transit and cycling corridor with a strong demand for housing while maintaining ground-floor retail on Clark Street. These new homes will bring new customers to local businesses, new friends and family for existing neighbors, and more tax revenue to our city at a time when it is much needed.
As a result, the proposal was supported by a clear majority of neighbors who shared feedback and I look forward to welcoming new neighbors to Clark Street. The development team aims to move through the rezoning and permitting process over roughly the next six months and begin construction Spring 2027, with an estimated construction timeline of 12 months.
To learn more about the proposal, check out the 46th Ward’s Zoning and Development page! |

| | | Alley Reconstruction - Leland / Eastwood / Clarendon!
Leland neighbors, please be advised that alley reconstruction for the alley bound Leland, the Uplift Soccer Field, Eastwood, and the Weiss Parking Garage has begun. Only the North-South portion of the alley right next to the soccer field will be rebuilt and the rest of the alley will remain accessible.
This means that the majority of neighbors will retain access to their parking spaces - only neighbors living at 849-51 W. Leland will need to seek alternative parking arrangements.

Neighbors may not have alley access after September 21, 2026, please make accommodations to relocate your cars from you parking lot before then. Some saw cutting and minor work took place earlier this week.
Construction is expected to take up to six weeks, weather permitting. Due to construction, the following changes will occur: During construction, residential garbage will be curbside and we ask that the homeowner relocate cans to the front of the property. There will be no access to the alley for. Barricades will block all entrance to the alley. Neighbors are advised to seek alternative parking.
If you have any questions, please reach out to the Ward Office via phone (773-878-4646) or email ([email protected]). |

| | Modernized Traffic Signals Coming at Leland and Sheridan!
Several weeks ago, Chicago Department of Transportation (CDOT) contractors began rebuilding the Leland / Sheridan intersection as part of a project to install modernized traffic signals at this intersection.
The new traffic signals will include pedestrian walk signs to increase safety at the intersection, and crews will also be extending the curb to reduce pedestrian crossing distances.
Crews have completed concrete work at the intersection to extend and rebuild curbs, gutters, and sidewalks. The week after next, workers will begin installing the foundations for the new traffic signals, which is expected to take another 4 weeks. After installation of the new foundations, concrete restoration is expected to take another 2-3 weeks, after which the new poles will be installed and the current poles will re removed.
Due to construction delays, the new signals may not be installed and functioning until December or January of the coming year. |

| | 4600 - 4800 N. Racine Water Main Update: Restoration Continues!
In May, the Department of Water Management (DWM) began work on a project to replace the water main on Racine between Wilson and Broadway. This project entails replacing the existing (more than 120 year-old!) water main and replacing all existing lead service lines along this stretch of Racine.
Crews have installed the new water main, installed all new service lines, and shut off the old water main; all underground plumbing work has been completed.
Crews began restoration work the first week of September. Concrete work to rebuild the road foundation, curbs, and gutters, has been completed.
After the completion of the concrete base, the contractors have 30 days to complete the remaining restoration work (milling and repaving the road surface and adjusting utility/drainage structures as needed). This means that all work should be completed before the end of October, leaving Racine looking as good as new before Halloween!
Separately, crews from a different contractor (G&V) are also completing several sidewalk repair/reconstruction projects on the 4700 N. Block of Racine - our goal is to leave both the street and sidewalk in great shape so that Racine neighbors can live construction-free lives for the next several years at a minimum.

New Streetlights Coming to 4600-4800 Beacon Street
Neighbors, you may have noticed more orange no-parking signs in Sheridan Park!
These restrictions are in place to enable CDOT (Chicago Department of Transportation) contractors to install new and more reliable streetlights on this stretch of Beacon. The supervising engineers anticipate this project should be complete by the end of October, as long as the weather cooperates.
Crews will install new street lights with "piggy-back" lights (which provide better sidewalk illumination) over the next several weeks. Once the new streetlights are installed, electrified, and functioning, crews will remove the old ones. Afterward, they will complete concrete and asphalt restoration as necessary. |

New Streetlights Coming to Sheridan Road (Montrose to Buena)
Neighbors, new street lights are coming to Sheridan Road!
CDOT (Chicago Department of Transportation) contractor will install new and more reliable streetlights on this stretch of Sheridan. The supervising engineers anticipate the project should be completed by mid-October, as long as the weather cooperates.

Once the new streetlights are installed, electrified, and functioning, crews will remove the old ones. Afterward, they will complete concrete and asphalt restoration as necessary.
