Dear Neighbors,
I am pleased to report that the inner Lake Shore Drive resurfacing and pedestrian safety improvement project has begun today, ahead of schedule.
As noted in my weekly email newsletters over the past several weeks, the project is expected to take approximately 4–6 weeks, weather permitting. Rain, extreme heat, or other adverse weather conditions may affect the schedule, with final pavement markings and other finishing touches continuing into September.
This investment will provide a smoother roadway, improve pedestrian safety, and extend the life of this important neighborhood street. Major phases of the project include:
- Installation of curb extensions ("bump-outs") at most intersections; During this phase, the westernmost traffic lane of Inner Lake Shore Drive may be temporarily closed
- Removal of the top 2–3 inches of existing asphalt ("grinding") and installation of temporary pavement markings
- Adjustment of utility structures, including manholes and vaults, to match the new roadway elevation
- Placement of the new asphalt surface
- Installation of permanent pavement markings, including lane lines, stop bars, and crosswalks
Throughout construction, inner Lake Shore Drive will remain open, except in areas where crews are actively working. Temporary parking restrictions on east-west side streets may also be posted as work progresses.
Thank you for your patience as this important infrastructure investment moves forward. If you have any questions, please contact my office at [email protected] or 312-643-2299.
