48th WARD NEWS: AUGUST 6, 2026

|
TREE EMERGENCY RESPONSE & DEBRIS REMOVAL
|
|
Crews from the Department of Streets and Sanitation (DSS) are working seven days a week to clean up tree debris and respond to emergency tree reports submitted during our recent severe storms in July and August.
Since the beginning of June, 48th Ward neighbors have made more than 500 tree emergency and tree debris removal requests. This accounts for roughly 14% of all requests submitted to 311 in the ward during that time, compared to just 5% this time last year.
Despite this increase, city crews have completed over 99% of tree emergency requests as well as 84% of tree debris removal requests. Please allow additional time as DSS and the Bureau of Forestry (BoF) respond to the last of these reports.
Remember, examples of tree emergencies include:
- A tree or large branch blocking a street, sidewalk, or alley
- A parkway tree or branch that has fallen onto a vehicle
- A parkway tree or branch that has fallen onto a house, garage, or other structure
- Another immediate public-safety hazard caused by a parkway tree
Thanks to the many neighbors who have submitted 311 requests during our recent summer storms. You help keep the 48th Ward safe and accessible for everyone. Have a question about a tree emergency or debris removal report you made? Contact us at [email protected] or 773-784-5277 with the 311 Service Request Number so we can help.

6130 N Sheridan - Update
A by-right project is being proposed for 6130 N Sheridan to replace the former Kindred Hospital structure. The developer is proposing a project similar in design to the condominium project currently under construction at 6150 N Sheridan. Because this project is located in the private zone under the Lakefront Protection Ordinance, this project will undergo Lakefront Protection review by the Chicago Plan Commission.

WHERE IN THE WARD IS LENI?
|
|
|
Leni joined our Edgewater Glen neighbors for the first-ever Tour de Granville! Organized by the Edgewater Glen Association, the ride started at Glenwood and Granville and headed west on the new Granville Greenway. This ride was made possible by the Granville Traffic Safety project that was implemented last year and spanned across three wards. To learn more about the Edgewater Glen Association and their hyper-local events, go here.

Leni was welcomed by the Ismaili Council to their annual Summer Social, where 500 Ismaili community members, including many 48th Ward neighbors, gather. The Summer Social is an opportunity for the youngest and oldest members of the community to come together to enjoy each other’s company, build community, eat together and make memories. We are very proud to have the Ismaili community in Edgewater. The Ismaili Jamatkhana at 6259 N Broadway hosts 48th Ward events throughout the year including local vehicle emissions testing, coat drives, vaccine clinics, and more!

Leni and Conor took a hard hat tour of the new $6.3 million Steep Theatre! In September, City Council approved $880,000 in community development funds towards this project. This funding was championed by Alderwoman Manaa-Hoppenworth and brings the city’s total support for the project to $3,868,535. The new theatre will feature a 70-seat theatre, a lobby-lounge, and support spaces for artists/staff. We’re thrilled that Steep Theatre has found their forever home in Edgewater, and are looking forward to opening night! Read more about this project here.

Leni was proud to co-host a community town hall on Chicago’s Crisis Assistance Response and Engagement (CARE) Program with community groups, as well as Ald. Timmy Knudsen (43rd), Ald. Andre Vasquez (40th), and Ald. Matt Martin (47th). CARE sends trained behavioral health professionals, rather than police officers, to respond to eligible mental health crises, connecting residents with the support they need while allowing officers to focus on emergencies that require a law enforcement response. It’s a smart, compassionate approach that strengthens public safety and delivers better outcomes for everyone.
