July 24, 2026 Dear Neighbors,
One of the things I love most about serving the 46th Ward is that no two days are the same, but every day is rooted in the same goal: building a stronger community. This past week offered opportunities to think about our ward from every angle, from exploring how thoughtful design can shape Chicago's future to helping the next generation of public servants learn how city government works.
Thank you to Alderwoman Maria Hadden (49th Ward) for modeling thoughtful collaboration by extending an invitation to join a tour of Flyway City: Architecture for a Flourishing Ecosystem and Chicago's Living Habitat at the Chicago Architecture Center. The tour provided an opportunity to engage directly with experts about how bird-friendly design can be incorporated into homes, commercial buildings, and large-scale developments. As new development continues across Chicago and within the 46th Ward, these conversations highlight the importance of thoughtful design choices that support economic growth while also making our city safer and more welcoming for birds and other wildlife. Both exhibits are open until January 3, 2027 - I hope you can stop by!

Just as thoughtful planning shapes the places we build, it's equally important that we stay connected to the people and businesses that bring those places to life every day. This week, I visited Tiztal Café (4631 N Clark St), La Mexicana Grill (4641 N. Clark St), Easy Tires (4653 N Clark St) along Clark Street with the Greater Ravenswood Chamber of Commerce (GRCC). Thank you to the Greater Ravenswood Chamber of Commerce for joining us and for leading the Dine In Solidarity initiative in partnership with the Illinois Hispanic Chamber of Commerce, Indivisible Lincoln Square, and my office to celebrate and support our Latin immigrant-owned restaurants.

These visits are also a great opportunity to hear directly from business owners about what's working, the challenges they're facing, and reduce barriers to programs like the Small Business Improvement Fund (SBIF). The Small Business Improvement Fund (SBIF) is one of the city’s longest-running and most successful programs, helping to retain and expand small businesses in nearly every neighborhood. SBIF grants use Tax Increment Financing (TIF) revenue to help businesses and owners of commercial and industrial properties make permanent building repairs and upgrades, and businesses are not required to repay SBIF grants!
As a note, SBIF grant applications for businesses in the Clark/Montrose TIF district open on August 1 and close on August 30. The Greater Ravenswood and Uptown Chamber of Commerce will be hosting a SBIF 101 Session on August 5, and I encourage entrepreneurs, business owners, and eligible businesses in the Clark/Montrose TIF to attend it to learn more about the SBIF application process.

I’m grateful for the partnerships that help us better serve our local business community, and I hope you can support our neighborhood businesses by enjoying a meal at a participating restaurant during Dine-In Solidarity Weekend, August 14–16. If you do, be sure to save your receipt and submit it for a chance to win gift cards!
That same spirit of investment extends beyond our commercial corridors—it also means creating opportunities for the next generation of leaders who will shape Chicago's future. Since taking office, I’ve been fortunate to welcome a group of summer interns and fellows each year, and they’ve been an incredible addition to the office. This week, they visited City Hall for a behind-the-scenes look at how our city government works. Thank you to the City Council's Legislative Research Bureau for hosting this valuable opportunity and giving interns from across the City the chance to learn directly from alderpersons, committee staff, and City leaders. I'm so proud of the passion and curiosity these young leaders bring to our office every day, and I can't wait to see all they accomplish as they continue serving the 46th Ward this summer.
Tomorrow, I hope you'll join me, along with the family, friends, and loved ones of Lois Juanita Ellington, as we celebrate the unveiling of Honorary Lois Juanita Ellington Way at the corner of Broadway and Sunnyside. This honorary street designation recognizes Ms. Ellington's lasting contributions to our community and ensures her legacy will continue to inspire generations to come. I invite all neighbors to be part of this special moment as we gather to honor her life, celebrate her impact, and officially unveil the new street sign together. I hope to see you there!

Have You Visited the Poetry Fence? One of the 46th Ward's most charming hidden gems can be found along the 4400 Block of Malden, where a simple fence has blossomed into a space for creativity and connection. What began as a way for a small group of neighbors to stay connected through poetry during the COVID-19 pandemic has grown into a community art installation.
Originally filled with poems from the group's weekly poetry gatherings, the fence soon invited neighbors to join in by leaving blank tags and a pen for anyone passing by. Today, the majority of the poems hanging on the fence have been written by neighbors, creating a beautiful collection of shared thoughts, memories, and moments of inspiration.
The Poetry Fence is a reminder that art has a way of bringing people together, one poem at a time. If you're walking through the neighborhood, stop by, take a read, and maybe even leave a few words of your own.

Some businesses serve food. Others serve community. Uptown Nutrition Chi does both.
When Tayo and her mother opened Uptown Nutrition Chi at 4548 N. Broadway 13 years ago, they had a simple but powerful vision: make healthy eating accessible while creating a space where every person who walks through the door feels like family.

Today, that vision is thriving. From protein-packed smoothies and refreshing teas to delicious crepes, waffles, pancakes, and nourishing bowls, Uptown Nutrition Chi proves that healthy choices don't have to sacrifice flavor. Every item on the menu is crafted with wellness in mind—without compromising on taste. But what truly sets this neighborhood gem apart isn't just what's on the menu—it's the atmosphere. Bright, welcoming, and full of positive energy, Uptown Nutrition Chi has become a gathering place where neighbors can connect, recharge, and leave feeling a little healthier than when they arrived.

Their commitment to community extends well beyond their doors. Seniors receive 10% off every Tuesday, first responders enjoy a 5% discount, and the space is available to rent for private events. They're also excited to partner with local entrepreneurs by hosting small business pop-ups, creating even more opportunities to support our local community.
Businesses like Uptown Nutrition Chi remind us that investing in our neighbors can be just as important as investing in a great meal. Whether you're stopping in for a post-workout smoothie, meeting a friend over breakfast, or simply looking for a welcoming place to unwind, you'll find plenty to love at this Uptown favorite.
Business Hours:
Monday–Friday: 7:00 AM – 5:00 PM Saturday: Closed Sunday: Closed
We are proud to celebrate the small businesses that make the 46th Ward such a unique place to call home. |

| | | Zoning Change Request - 1429 W. Irving Park
A potential buyer of 1429 W. Irving Park is seeking a zoning change from B3-2 to B2-3 in order to construct a five-story mixed use building on the site of an existing parking lot. The proposed building would include 36 residential units, 4,400 square feet of ground floor retail space, and 25 parking spaces. The proposed building would mostly consist of family-sized units: 8 three-bedroom units, 20 two-bedroom units, 4 one-bedroom units, and 4 studio apartments. Seven of the 36 residential units (i.e., 20%) would be designated as affordable units via the Affordable Requirements Ordinance. Fourteen of the 25 parking spaces would be interior garage spaces; the other 11 would be exterior spaces. All parking would be accessible via the alley and the proposal includes the elimination of an existing curb cut on Irving Park Road.
The 46th Ward Office is coordinating a presentation from the developers that will take place at the next quarterly meeting of the Southport Neighbors Association (SNA) at 7 PM on Monday, July 27 at Guthries Tavern (1300 W Addison). Neighbors can provide feedback in-person at the meeting and/or over a survey that will be released after the in-person meeting and held open for at least two weeks (Monday, July 27 through Monday, August 10).
You can see the street-facing elevation of the building below, and check out all the project details on the ward website here.

| | Residential Resurfacing coming to a street near you!
Good news, neighbors! Get ready to say goodbye to more potholes as the Chicago Department of Transportation (CDOT) begins resurfacing residential streets in the 46th Ward next week. CDOT is resurfacing the following residential streets this paving season! Leland between Clark and Dover - Milled, Paving Scheduled for July 30 Buena between Clarendon and Marine Drive - Milled, Paving Scheduled for July 30 Hutchinson between Hazel and Marine Drive - Milled, Paving Scheduled for July 31 Sunnyside between the CTA Station and Broadway - Milled, Paving Scheduled for July 31 Clarendon between Wilson and Lawrence - Milled, Paving scheduled for August Lakeside between Marine and Clarendon - Milled, Paving scheduled for August
We understand that having several simultaneous resurfacing projects in the neighborhood is disruptive and creates parking challenges. Our office will actively follow up with to ensure the work happens as quickly as possible; we also know that signs were seemingly put up too early and have communicated neighbors' frustration to CDOT.
We are also following up with CDOT to ensure that Pine Grove between Grace and Irving Park is resurfaced this year as well.
Overnight parking on all streets listed above will continue to be available but parking will be restricted during work hours - make sure to pay attention to any orange signs put up on these streets to avoid getting ticketed or towed! |
|
| Alley Reconstruction - Malden / Magnolia / Leland / Lawrence!
Malden / Magnolia neighbors, good news! Your alley reconstruction project is still moving ahead of schedule!
Several weeks ago, CDOT (Chicago Department of Transportation) crews began the long-awaited project to rebuild the alley bound by Malden, Magnolia, Leland, and Lawrence.
Over the course of construction, crews will remove the current asphalt surface and replace it with more durable concrete, replace existing catch basins and drainage structures as needed, and replace utility structures as needed to ensure proper drainage and sloping. If there are no delays, CDOT estimates that the work should be complete by the week of August 10 at the latest. Work is currently progressing faster than expected!
This week, crews poured concrete for the entire main body of the alley, the southern alley apron, and roughly 70% of the garage aprons. If the weather cooperates, crews will pour concrete for the sidewalk adjacent to the southern alley apron next Monday, complete final catch basin work on the northern section of the alley by Thursday, and pour the remaining garage aprons on Friday. Crews will then likely complete the final concrete and asphalt work the following week. Overall, neighbors will likely begin to have access to their garages starting between July 27 and August 3, depending on their exact location.
During construction, the alleys will be inaccessible for neighbors, and barricades will block all entrances. This means there are impacts to trash pickup and parking.
Trash Pickup: Trash pickup will take place from the street, in front of residences, rather than off the alley. At this point, all trash cans and dumpsters should have been relocated to the street. If your dumpster has not been moved yet, please reach out to our office ASAP and we will coordinate dumpster relocation with the contractors.
We know that trash collection on the street is inconvenient and takes away much-needed street parking, but unfortunately it is the only option.
Parking: Neighbors will be unable to access garages and rear parking spaces during construction and will need to find alternative off-street parking or rely on street parking. We understand that the loss of alley access is extremely disruptive; however, this alley reconstruction is a once-in-a-lifetime project, and this alley will not host similar work again for many decades.

| Say Goodbye to Potholes on Sheridan! In May, Chicago Department of Transportation (CDOT) contractors began resurfacing Sheridan Road between Montrose and Foster to fix the wear and tear on the street. The resurfacing project includes pedestrian safety improvements, including curb extensions and paint-and-post bump-outs opposite of “T” intersections for traffic safety.
Paving is now complete! Crews finished laying the asphalt yesterday and will complete the remaining striping next week. Once the final striping is laid down, crews will install the final signage and complete any remaining punchlist work. Resurfacing Construction RemindersDuring construction, signs will often be posted to limit parking during workdays to enable construction access. Please move your vehicle to avoid tickets. Parking will generally remain available overnight and on weekends. Be sure to check signage.
If you have questions or concerns, please reach out to the 46th Ward office at 773-878-4646 or via email at [email protected].
If you want to learn more about the project, check out the presentation from our online briefing on our website! |

| | 4600 - 4800 N. Racine - Water Main Update!
In May, the Department of Water Management (DWM) began work on a project to replace the water main on Racine between Wilson and Broadway. This project entails replacing the existing (more than 120 year-old!) water main and replacing all existing lead service lines along this stretch of Racine.
As of today (Friday, July 24), crews have installed the new water main and finished all necessary sewer repairs. Over the past two weeks, contractors have been hard to work replacing all existing lead service lines on the 4600 and 4700 N Blocks of Racine. Next week, crews plan to replace all lead service lines on the 4700 N Block of Racine. Contractors anticipate completing all service line installation by the end of next week.
Service line replacements will entail brief individual water shutoffs as homes are transferred from one service line to another, and crews will alert neighbors about any upcoming shutoffs in advance of any work being done. Occasional water main shutoffs may be required to transfer certain large antiquated service lines that lack shutoff valves. All water main shutoffs will be posted in advance.
During this phase of work, parking restrictions will be limited to the locations where crews need to station equipment and access service lines.
As always, neighbors can expect to park along Racine through the weekend. No work or parking restrictions are anticipated next week.
Please let us know if you have any questions or concerns by giving my office a call at 773-878-4646 or via email at [email protected]

| New Streetlights Coming to Sheridan Road (Montrose to Buena)
Neighbors, you may have noticed even more orange no-parking signs on Sheridan between Buena and Montrose!
These restrictions are in place to enable CDOT (Chicago Department of Transportation) contractors to install new and more reliable streetlights on this stretch of Sheridan. Given the limited extent of the segment under construction, the supervising engineers anticipate the project should be completed before Labor Day, as long as the weather cooperates.
Crews will install new streetlights with "piggy-back" lights (which provide better sidewalk illumination) over the next several weeks. Once the new streetlights are installed, electrified, and functioning, crews will remove the old ones. Afterward, they will complete concrete and asphalt restoration as necessary.
We understand that streetwork across the ward can cause parking challenges, and we are doing our best to keep all projects on track and on time. If you have any questions or concerns about this work, please reach out to my office at 773-878-4646 or via email at [email protected]. |
