Good morning neighbors,

Happy Valentine's Day to all - I couldn't love our community more. Today may be Valentine's Day, but there's a lot to celebrate this week. We celebrate the Lunar New Year on Tuesday entering the year of the Fire Horse, a time of intense energy and bold transformation. Wednesday is Ash Wednesday, the beginning of the Lenten season of fasting and prayer for Christians and the start of Ramadan, a month of prayer, fasting, and self-reflection for the Muslim community. We wish a peaceful season to all who observe.

Next week, Wednesday, Feb. 18 is also our next City Council meeting. You can see the agenda and how to participate in person or virtually on Clerk Anna Valencia's website.

Have a safe and restful weekend,

Alderwoman Maria Hadden

Support Black-Owned Businesses This February!

This Black History Month, our office encourages you to send some extra love to our local Black-owned business! As the most diverse neighborhood in the City of Chicago, Rogers Park has plenty of Black-owned businesses to become your new go-to spots, including Belizean cuisine, fresh coffee, Senegalese delicacies, and more! For a full list of Black-owned businesses, check out this website published by the Rogers Park Business Alliance.

Congratulations, Jordan Community School!

Great news, 49th Ward! Jordan Community Elementary School has received funds from The Awesome Project to build a Miyawaki mini-forest, similar to the trellises of their Vine Trellis Project! These mini-forests offer a low-cost, community-driven solution to rising heat loads on buildings and streetscapes. Jordan plans to use their Miyawaki mini-forest as a pilot project, hopefully expanding to an area of Pottawatomie Park.  Congratulations, Jordan Community School!

Happy Valentine's Day!

Happy Valentine's Day from the 49th Ward team! No matter how you plan to celebrate this holiday, we hope that you enjoy the day with plenty of connection and love with those who are important to you in your life.

Happy Lunar New Year!

We wish all those who celebrate a happy Lunar New Year! Lunar New Year will occur on Tuesday, February 17, and marks the start of the Year of the Horse. Interested in celebrating the start of the Zodiac calendar? You can participate in any of the exciting Chicago events happening city-wide. Check out a guide of Lunar New Year events here!

Happy Ash Wednesday!

Happy Ash Wednesday to those who celebrate! Ash Wednesday, which will take place on Wednesday, February 18, is a holy day of prayer and fasting, and marks the beginning of Lent. We wish those celebrating a holy and meaningful Lent season.

Ramadan Mubarak!

Ramadan Mubarak to those who celebrate! Ramadan is a month of prayer, fasting, self-reflection, and community in the Muslim community. The start date of Ramadan is dependent on the sighting of the waxing crescent moon, but the beginning of the holiday has been tentatively scheduled for Wednesday, February 18. We wish those who celebrate a peaceful and joyful celebration.

KNOW YOUR RIGHTS RESOURCES

As Operation Midway Blitz continues and ICE agents have been active around the City, we want to remind neighbors of our Fighting Against Fascist Occupation resources. Know your rights, stay safe, and stay informed. Find our guide here.

Office Closed February 16

Please note that our office will be closed on Monday, February 16, in observance of President's Day. The Department of Streets and Sanitation will continue with typical garbage and recycling collection schedules, despite the city holiday. You can check your schedule here. We will reopen on Tuesday, February 17, at 9 a.m. If you have any questions or concerns, please email [email protected] or leave a message at 773-338-5796, and we will respond to you when we return.

1224 W Loyola Demolition Permits

Please be aware that Loyola University received demolition permits for 1224 W Loyola Ave, previously home to Archie's Cafe, the Roman Susan Art Gallery, and the Edge Art Gallery, in January 2026. My office believes Loyola University had other options for development that could have been more beneficial to our community, and previously circulated petitions that demanded Loyola provide an equitable pathway for the university to coexist with vital neighborhood gathering spaces, and for the university's real estate decisions to adhere to its Anchor Mission. While they have not shared a timeline with us at this moment, they have told us that they will begin demolition as soon as ComEd confirms that all power to the site has been disconnected. Loyola has requested that any questions about the demolition should be directed to Jennifer Clark at [email protected].

Willye B. White Park Getting A Splash Pad in 2026!

Fantastic news, 49th Ward! After some time, we are excited to announce that Willye B. White Park will be getting a long-awaited new water feature in 2026! The Chicago Park District will rehabilitate the existing spray pool by converting it into a splash pad without standing water, making it accessible for children with limited mobility. Accompanying these changes, a new custom water playground will be installed for children ages 2 to 12.

You have the chance to vote on what the new splash pad will look like! Voting will remain open through February 27, and you can vote here! Thank you to the Chicago Park District and the hard work of so many community members in making this neighborhood project a reality.

Need assistance with snow shoveling this winter?

The 49th Ward is proud to bring back its Snow Squad for this winter season! This program will connect interested volunteers and those who need assistance to shovel walkways and keep sidewalks safe this winter.

If you are a senior or a person living with a disability and you are a 49th Ward resident who needs help with shoveling snow this winter, please complete this form.

If you would be interested in volunteering to shovel snow for your fellow neighbors, please complete this form.

Note: This does NOT GUARANTEE snow will be shoveled; rather, our office will share the location you submit with our Snow Squad Volunteers. Once someone is available, they will stop by to shovel for you.

Infrastructure Updates

DWM Sewer Rehabilitation Work

Neighbors, please be advised that the Department of Water Management (DWM) began a Sewer Lining project on November 24, 2025, and will have 75 calendar days to complete their work. This work will occur on the sewer west of N Greenview Ave from the alley south of W Pratt to W North Shore.

DWM will be sending letters to residents located in the immediate area to provide notification of the work once they begin lining the sewer mains. No parking signs will be posted in the immediate area one workday prior to the start of any scheduled work. It will be necessary to close some lanes, but the streets will remain open to traffic. Work is typically completed during working hours, and Cure In Place Pipe (CIPP) is non-destructive and requires little to no excavation, limiting the impact to residents.

The rehabilitation work includes cleaning the sewers and the installation of CIPP. The installation of CIPP consists of lining the existing sewers and generally does not require excavation, except when repairs are required prior to lining of the sewer main, catch basin lateral connections, catch basin structures, or manhole structures.

Typical work includes the following:

• Main sewer cleaning and televising

• Catch Basin (drainage structures on the curbside) cleaning, televising, and lining of the pipe connections to the main sewer

• Catch Basin and Sewer Manhole structures lining

• Main Sewer Lining immediately followed by the reinstatement of house drain services and catch basin pipe connections

• The lined sewer will be televised to ensure that the work was done properly

If you have any questions or concerns, please reach out to our office at [email protected] or at 773-338-5796.

OEMC Winter Preparation Tips

The Chicago Office of Emergency Management and Communications (OEMC) encourages residents to be prepared for the winter season. Public safety is the top priority, and staying safe during the winter months requires taking steps now to winterize our homes and cars and prepare our families when the cold, wind, ice, and snow come our way. You can find the warming center nearest you by visiting the Warming Center Portal (https://buff.ly/eVOZg7i)

Sidewalk Shoveling Requirements

As a reminder to all residents and businesses, per the Municipal Code of Chicago, property owners and occupants are responsible for keeping sidewalks clear of snow and ice. Many of our neighbors rely on walking and public transportation as their primary way to get around the city. Without a wide, clear path through the snow and ice, it makes it difficult for pedestrians (especially people with disabilities, seniors, and children) to walk to their destination safely.

If you have a neighbor who needs assistance clearing the sidewalk, pitch in to help out!

Please Note: Precinct polling places on Election Day do not have drop boxes.
